I wish I knew there was food coming across the lake from Jungles bar and grill, I wouldn't have had those sausages haha! They are amazing folks who are going above and beyond especially with what businesses have been through lately. I have to give shoutouts where they're due, and Jungles is my well deserved place to go! The Wally's jungles north location was kind enough to host my 40th B-day and all the staff did an amazing job! They may be putting a "Hunker down" burger on the menu in the future :)

    Some quick tips:
-You each need your own hole (a decent distance apart if possible)
-I prefer to just throw up the shack on top of the snow versus shoveling it down to the ice because it gets so slippery!
-Rig up a rattle reel to leave out overnight.
    -Small jigs with a fathead.

As soon as you scraped down to the ice, I said "Oh no, They are going to be wading before morning." Interlocking foam mats or leave the snow on. Even better is interlocking mats on top of the snow. A fan will double the efficiency of the heater and help reduce condensation. You have the right idea of keeping the heater up off the ice. You are right when you said that it's fun just being out there. Keep at it, you'll land one eventually!

    Hi Steve!
A tip I've learned for the water in front of the heater, drill a partial ice fishing hole (like half way through the ice). The water will collect in the ice hole. It is very important to drill out that partial hole all the way when you are done with that fishing/camping spot so it refrezes properly, and nobody else sprains an ankle.
I highly recommend added a rechargeable portable fan or two in your ice house when running the heater. It helps tremendously in moving the heat downwards.
Another tip, is doing foam matts of some sort as a base on the ice. It blocks the cold from the ice which keeps your shack even warmer! Yes of course it's more gear, but definitely worth it in my opinion! Coming from Minnesota and Ice Fishing quite a bit!

A lot of people use those foam mats that fit together like a puzzle piece for the flooring in the ice fishing tent. They’re usually used for kids play areas but work great for ice fishing. That way you’re not dealing with the puddles in the ice.

    • @fuzziemunkey
      @fuzziemunkey 2 роки тому +11

I do this as well. I usually only clear a small spot around the hole down to ice. The rest I leave a few inches of snow and then put padding over the snow. Keeps the floor higher than your hole which helps with water buildup.

As someone who has ice fished and anchored my shack with snow, I can tell you that if you pile 3-5” of snow on your shack then stand on the snow to tamp it down very hard, your shack won’t go anywhere if wind comes up. You will need to shovel the snow off though otherwise you’ll tear the fabric (don’t ask me how I know lol). As for location each lake is different, but fish prefer a deeper location (water stays warmer deeper), and typically like to have vegetation around them. Additionally they will go dormant (unless they need food) in extremely cold weather which makes location even more important. As a fisherman that’s serious enough I have a fish finder mounted to my kayak and will also kayak fish in the ocean, I gotta say that it’s always a learning experience no matter how long you’ve been fishing. Loved the video and who cares if you catch a fish…we tune in to watch YOUR adventures. Happy New Year Mr. Wallis.

Steve I work in snow removal and highly recommended ski overalls, the brand that’s comfy and warm on your lower body is “Arctix” . They do a better job than just using thermal underpants . I use my jeans and the flexibility on these is top notch. If you can keep your legs warm you can survive super low temps.

I wouldn't worry about how your first trip went. You basically did all the same things I did when I first started. I too bought a 8" auger, but that just takes way too much out of me to crank more than a couple of holes. Especially through 18" of ice.
A 6" auger would be more manageable, or get an adapter that will let you use a portable hand drill.
As for the melting ice, I have a Big Buddy heater as well and had the same problem. By morning, it melted a dish shaped indentation and was super slippery. Getting a big floor mat or even better foam mats will make the surface much safer and dryer to stand and walk on
Also the size of the lures you have are a bit big for that shallow water. I think going with some wire worms would have netted you some whitefish or perch. I actually don't know what species are there where you guys were, but most AB lakes also have pike, walleye, and trout.
If you ever have plans on fishing on Sylvan or Gull, I might try to meet you there.

Man now there’s a thought…Steve and Crazy Neighbor trying to figure out what to do after pulling a big ol angry pike through the hole! That’d make for an interesting watch for sure. I landed one in my kayak one time after a hell of a fight that lasted over an hour…and I can tell you not only did he drag me all over the lake, but he was aggressive enough in the boat that I’ve never got my knife out the sheath so fast in my life. Was good eats later that day.

Few tips for the ice steve, interlocking foam matts or any sort of rubber matt for the floor gets rid of the ice and drys nice with the heater also keeping the propane outside when its really cold out can turn the propane to a liquid and cause heater failure and when you’re setting up the tent be carful with water and slush underneath or on the skirt of the tent and potentially freeze to the ice its very brutal to say the least

I ice fish regularly in colder weather then that. When you have a thermal insulated ice tent and a 10.000 to 18,000 btu heater like he does, the top layer of the ice melts and it gets very wet and slippery in the tent. And like I said in my comment you can get rid of the water in holes placed around the tent as long as you do not drill them all the way down/through the ice.
