Amazon sells a 2.4" spark arrestor that has much smaller holes and slips over the existing arrestor. Yes, one should be included in the initial purchase, but at least this will add to the safety.
Im glad I am not the only one who finds those cooking plates useless on a tent stove. My fltom stove has one and i ended up welding it to the stove to keep it from falling off constantly anytime i transported my stove. And yes they also leak smoke. so to keep that down , in addition to welding , i used stove gasket cement to seal up all the gaps.
Seems to be a fair review. Add a damper, subtract the top plate, and improve the arrestor. They should hire you to troubleshoot these things before final production. In this case the unboxing was a nice addition, and by the way, your hat is great!
I have not tried mine yet. I took the inner side plates off and put fiberglass cloth in bottom of them and reinstalled. This covered the flame cut outs on the side because they vented out the top of the plates. So feeding oxygen above the fire. I then covered the cutouts completely with jb weld extreme heat. And glued the lid down at same time. The bottom vent should be functional now. Plus pipe damper is on its way. I picked up 8th inch hardware cloth for arrester as well. I even glued the pipe reciever before bolting down to prevent smoke. Asthma sucks! Thanks for video.
Another great critique. I bought a Deerfamy seat cushion that leaked all air on the first trip out. I don't have confidence in their products. Thanks for checking out their stove so we don't have to. 👍
I don't think the arrestor is that big of a deal. The sparks are going upwards with a fair amount of force. I also like the top plate so this is a personal preference. Also, some common sense is required for any stove use in a tent.
Me personally who pretty much lives outdoors off the grid and in the woods would prefer to have that disc there not only for cooking but for loading the stove that particular feature is a must have as far as the smoke well that comes with any stove that you use that's just a part of it I do agree with you on the top hat what you would call a spark resistor I do think there should be smaller holes and thank you for this video you've been very helpful with this particular review ✝️
It's a good stove. I used it a few times already and haven't had issues with it. It's being used in a 40+ years old canvas tent. The only thing you have to get is a stove pipe damper because the bottom damper on the DeerFamy isn't that great. As for the top plate I have a Coleman portable folding oven I keep on top of it. As for smoke, you're going to get smoke no matter how much money your going to spend on a wood stove.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yeah these ones with plates do seem to smoke bad. I have that problem with the winner well nomad too when I damper it down and it's an expensive stove so I do agree with that point.
@@LoneCrowAdventures LoneCrowAdventures I need advice on a good quality survival blanket-tarp that works very well and won't bankrupt me. Do you have any suggestions? I just purchased the Arcturus survival blanket-tarp but I'm looking for something else 🏕️🏞️. By the way is that winner well stove better than the DeerFamy woodstove in your opinion?
I'm pretty sure those are heat resistant gloves. Maybe the disc feature is to let you make Smores over the open fire. I'd place the stove on a fire resistant matter at least 3 feet in circumference all around to prevent sparks from touching flammable items. Nice job!
Great review, seems to be a decent stove for a budget stove. You mentioned several times you have the Winnerwell Nomad , that's what I have the med size with the front glass. I don't find I get a lot of heat from the stove even though the pipe has been red hot. I agree with that top openings is not needed.
Nice review!! I’d love to see this stove being used in your tent- seems like it’d be difficult to hook up the guy lines to the spark arrestor given your height( I’m even shorter). So I’d love to see how you get that all set up. PS I have a Kni-co Packer stove and love it.
I recently bought a little canvas teepee tent that I intend on trying this stove in next weekend. But guess what????? Tonight I'm back to using my trustworthy Winnerwell Nomad in a brand new hit tent.... the LUXE MEGAHORN XL! LUXE has a new distributor and they are back in business. I've wanted the megahorn xl for a long, long time. We are excited. Maybe even a slight dusting of snow is possible!!!!
I don't think I ever had enough ash in the bottom of my stoves at the end of the night of hot tenting to even need a drawer myself, i don't burn pine , i don't really like the removable plate ,the spark arrestor or that sectional pipe myself either though, i rather titanium roll pipe ,it doesn't fuse together like that stainless crap . I'm a little jaded on these cheapy stoves and them overpriced winnnerwells , we build them here out of titanium and collapsing so there stronger and lighter . Good review though, ive got a new member that bought this double wall thing though it doesn't draft well without modifications to it
I like the Winnerwell stoves but they are a tank and you need a pulk sled for sure. This stove us pretty bad. I tested it last nice in a hot tent and it did a decent job except uneven heat and the latches and knobs get so hot you can't touch them without gloves. Cheap stoves are not very good. You get what you pay for!
While you are correct that the spark deflector isn't perfectly designed...Be careful not to suffocate. You need a critical amount of smoke release to not have backflow.
Dont modify the spark arrestor the holes are big because creosote and other stuff can build up causing a blockage wrapping it in wire can be dangerous if your asleep and theres a blockage smoke will pour in
I think the cooking hole on the top is because a lot of these stoves and deigned and made in Asia. The traditional house cook stove in most of Asia is made of clay and has cook holes in the top just like this. So I think they put one in without thinking about it.
Honestly, feels like this is only an option for experienced campers. I'm new to camping and will be staying away from this one. I'll troubleshoot something like this once I'm familiar with looking out for safety issues, etc.
Great review. Deerfamy has nothing to do with the manufacturing lol. This is a generic template produced in China sold by countless distributors under different names
I have a similar stove and I agree with your issues... I ended up buying a pipe damper and adding it on as well as a 90 degree bend and a heat resistant fiberglass wrap to put on the pipe for added protection. even with the added purchases I still feel it was a decent purchase for my needs. My stove also came with some leg extension to make the stove taller. Adding the few extra gave me better piece of mind when using the stove.
I did the same too I bought 2 elbows and a Shepard's hook I don't have a hot tent but jimmy up my chimney to sit under my tarp and the elbows help to create the bends to go out and up and 2nd elbow goes up and away from tarp, campers comment on the clever set up, with the Shepard's hook and I customised the flute for thicker steel and the stoves flute pieces I use further from the heat coz it's thinner steel...I use an exhaust grill cap for a spark arrestor it works fab...

I'll check that one out.

I've thought about having my winnerwell nomad welded shut but just hate to do that to such an expensive stove. I'd rather see this option left off.

Thanks so much! I forget where I got that hat. My mom might have even bought it for me Christmas one year now that I think about it!

Those sound like impressive mods!

I have a Deerfamy zippered low profile cot that I really love and have used a bunch of times. This stove does leave something to be desired!!!
I don't think the arrestor is that big of a deal. The sparks are going upwards with a fair amount of force. I also like the top plate so this is a personal preference. Also, some common sense is required for any stove use in a tent.
Yes. It makes me a fair bit uncomfortable

Oh that little stove pumps it out for me!!!! I've got my tent up over 100 degrees at about 9 degrees with that stove! I love that stove!!!

Very nice review & you’ve made some good points about the stove . Thank you.
Thanks for taking the time to check it out
Good to see you again ! Really liked your review and totally agree with your critique of the stove. Say hi to the warden for me 🙂
Will do! She's coming hot tent camping with me this next weekend!!!!
Thank you for doing this! Subscribed
You're welcome 😊
Take one of the pipes to Lowe's if it needs to be longer (higher) and match it to one of their pipes...
We love your channel lone crow
Awe thanks so much 🙏 I appreciate the words of encouragement 😊

So raise up your tent stove a little bit more off the ground to get your spark arrestor height.
Sure with cement blocks. Not wood blocks!
That spark arrestor is terrifying!
Isn't it thought????? Gotta fix that!
Awesome review! Thanks! New sub.
While you are correct that the spark deflector isn't perfectly designed...Be careful not to suffocate. You need a critical amount of smoke release to not have backflow.
Yes this is very true. We wouldn't want that!
Thanks for Sharing
I have a small deep stew pot that fits in that hole and heats water real fast
Dont modify the spark arrestor the holes are big because creosote and other stuff can build up causing a blockage wrapping it in wire can be dangerous if your asleep and theres a blockage smoke will pour in
Especially in low end tent stoves

They sell aftermarket flew dampers and stove pipe
I'm pretty sure those are heat resistant gloves.

Yep it's a but scary!
Together
It's best to watch together ❤️
Damper is not a good idea.
No? I've hot stoves with them and I like them

I don't think anybody should value your opinion on any of this so far you've been wrong about quite a lot
