- After a year of development, we are proud to present a retrospective on King Dedede's time in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. While he was mainly known for BAir and his DThrow chain grabs, we at The Von Karmas decided to produce a documentary on the character. We hope it was worth the wait, and we'll likely be pumping out content again soon. This was seriously one of the most elaborate projects we have ever done and are happy to see it finally released.

To this day I still don’t understand why Sakurai totally gutted him in smash 4 and ultimate. Why did they change almost every single move? Why did they make him horrible?
They knew he was too powerful to live..smh
Sometimes Sakurai seems to not like his children for some reason
Man Brawl Dedede was really something, even as a kid I noticed how stupid his spotdodge was
I wish Dedede can be top tier once again, but sadly he was in a slow meta with chaingrabs

This video is ooozing with quality. Love the video! As someone who plays dedede a lot in ultimate, it’s cool to see how different he used to be in brawl. I really wish they brought back waddle Dee toss though. Waddle Dee toss seems kinda pivotal to his character. He even enters the battlefield with waddle dees carrying him in ultimate. Smh
Gordo toss seems like a far more clunky move, right? You don't get freedom of movement in the air while using it, plus there's the boatload of startup and endlag

Looking at this makes me realize how much they messed D3 but, also has me puzzled of why he became the way he is now. Gordo toss is so much worse in every aspect except for the fact that you can do some cool setups or combos with it but, that is only when you get to hit all the criteria to make it happen. ( And there was a lot.) It is quite unfortunate how he became now.
I have a theory on why waddle Dee toss was removed. I think it was removed due to hardware limitations. Think about it. Ice climbers were removed from Smash4 as there was too many characters for the 3DS to handle and which is why it wasn't added to Wii U either since Sakurai didn't want one to have more than the other. So that being said if 16 characters were able to break the game imagine what 2 waddle Doos to each D3 player could do to the hardware. So instead let it be Gordo which does not stick forever, no special effects, just plain and simple replacement.

Also, one question: When you discuss the technique at 36:50 you mention that it works on Ness but not Lucas. Why is that?
Ness has much worse airspeed and a slightly bigger hurtbox which is how he got hit, from what I can remember. Been like what, 7-8 months since I looked into it. No matter what I did I couldn't make it work on Lucas. However, his grab release animation was atrocious and allowed for followups anyway, so it isn't the end of the world.

This was something I was unsure of when directing the video. Ult players tend to treat 55:45s as +1s while others treat 60:40s as +1s. It was pretty hard to translate the BBR Matchup Chart to the Ratio system due to this sheer lack of consistency. To keep it simple, we put it out this way, but I'll definitely be the first to admit this was a bit iffy. Given the sheer amount of time it took to make this, by the end we were just focused on ensuring the Dedede content itself was perfect.

Why is he so different now? I'm really curious of why Sakurai decided to butcher his own creation. And in ultimate continues to be neglected from any buffs after a long time. Though at least not the worst.
Probably Kirby bias reasons. It makes sense that all 3 Kirby characters weren’t very good in sm4sh.
At 21:14 you say D3 is the heaviest character in the game. I'm pretty sure Bowser has been the heaviest in each game since his debut though so I'm not sure if you meant something else.
In terms of KO%, Dedede outstretches Bowser. Numerically Bowser is better, but in-context D3's fall speed makes him survive MUCH longer. We go over it shortly after. His better recovery also contributes, but is irrelevant to the discussion.
