  • A little bit of Ham Mesh Networking, using the Linksys WRT54G router, and Broadband-Hamnet (HSMM-MESH) -- and some comparisons of this with AREDN, the emergency radio data network effort which runs on Ubiquiti. A little bit on how this all works, what mesh networking is, the kinds of things you can experiment with the WRT54G (and versions), how it compares with its offshoot, AREDN and Ubiquiti gear, and more. You can get more info on Broadband Hamnet at (www.broadband-hamnet.org) and AREDN (www.aredn.org) at their websites. Both are great projects-Broadband Hamnet really for the great experimentation platform (those Linksys WRT54G's are only $5-15 each!), where AREDN is more aimed at serious infrastructure (off the shelf, commercial Ubuiqiti gear and outdoor installations, etc.).

in the book "High Speed Multimedia for amateur radio" by Glen Popiel, KW5GP on page 8.14 he gives suggestions on how to weatherproof and power your rig to keep the antenna feed line as short as possible.
great video and thanks for reviewing some of the possible uses of HSMM-mesh

Just got my general tkt and looking to make a trail cam like this so I don't have to make a hike to pull an SD card. Didn't know I could use a RPI though. Thx for the idea! I need a couple miles to make it work.

Thank you for you video. I just bid on a linksys. I might be the only node in the area but you have to start someplace. Thanks again.

Yeah I'm in the same situation. Did you get anybody else in your area to take it on?

I'd like to get regular internet access in the middle of nowhere with something like this. Can I? Or Is arddn a better way? I'm a total newb at this. Closest cell tower is 18km away. I get an ok signal. Hate the company that operates it. Thanks

Do you have links or information on dealing with using Linux desktops with wifi pci cards for this? I imagine then it would be simply creating modded drivers for the adapters and modding the cards for the ham freq range right?

Are there other type of routers outside of the Cisco Linksys that can be used?

The preferred route for mesh networking nowadays is using Ubiquiti equipment and the AREDN software base -- if you're looking to get out to a wide range of hams. In my area, we now have more than 50 nodes all interconnected via Ubiquiti/AREDN. That said, the WRT54G stuff is fun to play with -- but not weatherproof, or as high powered.

What does it take to get a HAM license? I will be doing this. Looks fun.

Did you modify firmware of Ubiquiti equipment?

+KK6FUT @3:16 How did you say you could get these for free?

Out here in California, there are municipal "e-waste" collection events, and you see these routers frequently on the pile of discarded equipment. (along with lots of TVs and PCs). Sometimes you can convince folks to let you take them off their hands for free.
