- -Welcome to the Sleep Ranch! We are located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where our ancestors settled and started ranching in 1883.
I (Carson) work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town, and our son Silas! We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.

Brrrrrrrrrr!!!!!! Just watching you on the 4 wheeler with the snow and cold makes me cold!!!!! With Silas on the sled reminds me when my son was little…I put a cardboard box on a regular sled and pulled my son around out in the cornfields… After about a hour riding with a icicle frozen to his glove I took him back to the warm house and he was out like a light for about 3 hours…..Cows are looking good and looking pretty full of their calves….Have a great day!! When our daughter was young we had the Newfoundland pull her and I around! She could pull my late husband around on a runner sled along the creek! Enjoy this time, they grow up so fast! Happy New Year from Iowa! 💝

I heard the a g school in Nebraska run tests. Cattle on corn stalks with snow on the ground , no water for extended period of time. Cattle done ok on snow , for water. We had trouble with are house well. The pipe cracked under the water level. We still have the sled are parents give us as children. About 1959 -60. I'm 6 yrs older then my brother.

I was sort of expecting to see a pony under the tree for Silas. Oh well, with another bundle om the way, it will be as easy setting up a stable, tack room and feed storage area for two as for one pony!😊

Hey for gloves at this age use socks! 1 or 2 kid wool socks then you can either pull them up over their sleeves or under their clothes.. also thick tights (for boys just buy the black, brown or white ones) then extra protection like long under wear but cover feet too!
Hi Carson, It is handy that the 4 wheeler just fits in that tunnel so you can ride through it instead of walking. I saw a UA-cam short video recently of a Hunter in Idaho that had a Mountain Lion Charge him while hunting. He was really nervous trying to survive and he shot at the Mountain Lion and missed but luckily just the sound of the shot scared it off. Be careful while on foot walking around in the wilderness.

That snow looks refreshing considering we have nothing but mud here. My brother was in Deadwood and got snowed in for a day around Christmas. I was a little jealous lol

Looked like the hardest work was pulling Silas around on the sled LOL. Tough break with the well, but as you said, it is always something, and the key is getting to a solution, and not worrying about what can't be controlled. Great to see those black cows on the fresh white snow, I totally agree.

Man did I get claustrophobic in that tunnel. If that cow is #16 does that mean you have had her a long time?
Give those cows some shelter and you won’t have to have all that problems. They weren’t meant to be in -20F and your calving will go a lot better if you have some maternity pens.
