Back in the 80's We had a covered silage clamp, we placed hay bales over the entire clamp, then straw on top again later in the season. The hay, straw, and silage was all used at a very similar rate. Vermin do go into straw, but not hay so there were no rat holes in the sheet.
The science behind it and the different techniques of making silage is always fascinating to listen to. I love how the dressed front shows how it was compacted to help create the fermentation process. You know... I bet Phil Harding could give a real good talk on the stratification he sees in it! 🤔
What’s the difference between the black cover sheet, on the inside, and the green sheet? Is the weave/density different? Also every farmer in the UK seems to be adamant about green sheets.🤔
for silage best fermentation the Lactic acid should be 3 times higher than acetic acid & ethanol quantity should be as low as 1% of the dry matter & PH of the silage for excellent anaerobic fermentation should be around 4 # i agree past boy friends & past husbands should inform if any damage occurs to plastic covering sheets ❤️❤️🇵🇰

We feed a bit of cake in the parlour during milking 😊

No water on cover off pit .if no roof u have to collect run of plastic
Don't have to collect run off. Consistent DM silage (which makes a huge difference).
I thought you had to. I see alot of farmers roofing there silage pits now.

Because, at least traditionally, they have a wall on each side to clamp it.
