One thing I have to deal with every year is post-emergent control of WEEDS! I can't stand the fact that getting rid of weeds in the lawn is usually a monotonous task that doesn't give you immediate results when using herbicides. Nonetheless, a necessary evil to keep the turf healthy and get the best lawn we can have!
We talk about weed killers, how to make sure you buy one that will work and the different types there are. There's even some "Harry Potter magic" involved!

When it says the weed killer will not kill the grass, they are true, but up to a point. I find that areas that are treated are stressed enough that when it gets hot a few weeks later, then the grass IS affected. I have never had ANY luck with Bayer products. For hardier weeds, the Weed B Gone with the purple label works well. The problem I have with buying chemicals through Amazon is it will frequently come back saying "Cannot be shipped to your location".
Your lawn looks great, I've got a little grass in my weeds!!!!
If you think this looks good, I think the post-renovation lawn looks even better!
Nice you include the pictures after applied.
Great job, I get overwhelmed at identifying and spraying. I found your video much like Alyn Haynes pretty easy to follow. You encourage me to spot spray instead of blanket.
Hey I appreciate that! I take a lot of inspiration from @thelawncarenut too
Verygood info, thanks!
Man great video and content.
Also, Escalade herbicide for dandelions and clovers under 81* and horsepower for under around 90, I’d have to check the label
Beautiful lawn
Sorry about all the comments, I’m about to start a yard and just giving my thoughts as the come. Dawn platinum is the best surfactant I can find. I’ve used hydrasmart 80/20 (second best) as well and dawn just out performs it. Helps especially with violets and wild ivy (creeping charlie)
Hey don’t apologize! I love community engagement. Thank you for commenting
Great vid, the spot spraying save so much $ and product. Prefer the savings of spraying rather than a weed and feed that blanket covers.
Weed and feed is the DEBIL!
I have no idea what I have in my grass. Ive sorted the dandilion, moss and clover but I have a tiny purple flower creeping thing sprouting now. Is there an app or something to identify it? Love your channel. 👌
The neighbor next to me has a wild violet lawn. I've been fighting that weed for years. Best combo for me has been tryclopyr and dicamba mix, no surfactant.
Triclopyr is for sure a good option
We have the same neighbor. Without wild violet she would have just dirt. We are spraying about 2 inches in her yard to try to get a border without her knowing 😉
Does the blue dye eventually wash away or is it a matter of waiting for things to die back and get cut?
HOW GOOD IS THIS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT ALOT OF PEOPLE NEED TO CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
Proper usage is key
@@TheLawnMentor Your assumption is flawed. Grass is not being used properly and using poison to ki=hill healthy plants that do not harm humans is not medicine.
Healthy plants, whether vegetables, fruits, flowers or grasses, don't need people to survive. In most cases people don't need grass gardens to survive. "Lawns" area recent fad that uses excessive human resources to tend to plants that aren't well suited to survival where they are artificially planted as monocultutes, isolated from the complex environments in which they evolved.
Each plant type does best in a slightly different environment. Using natural minerals and materials that are found in an area to change soil pH and chemistry can make growing conditions for unwanted types of plants. Dandelions do poorly in non-acid soil. Clover does poorly in dry, high nitrogen environments that tall grasses with deep root systems can survive in. Tall grasses deprive broad leaf plans of sunlight.
Gardeners who used their brains, not poisons helped our species to adapt to the environment and survive. Those who tried to change the environment to suit our preference have failed spectacularly.

Nice!😊
People say I am anal about how meticulous I am about my grass. It doesn’t bother me. I like the challenge of a healthy lawn. The perennial weeds are the enemy. Purple violet. Creeping Charlie. Clover. Dicambra does not affect these pesky weeds and in Canada the heavy hitter herbicide’s are non available in retail stores. So it’s frustrating.🇨🇦
I can’t use Triclopyr. It’s pretty rough on Bermuda grass. Wish I could. Wild violet is a problem
Stuff is hard to get rid of!
I've been fighting wild violets for years. It's like nutsedge. Keeps coming back. I wish I knew of a sure fire kill without hurting my Bermuda and fescue.
Me too
Will the weed b gone not kill lillies, hyacnets, tulips, day lilie, peony. ?? Would using food coloring dyes work like the commercial blue die you talked about Sir I really like your lawn fella. You really put your whole arsenal of tricks for such a lush lawn fella. ??Thanks
Id be careful around your other plants! For dye might work but I don’t know if it will permanently dye the grass. Never tried it
Apply sugar on the lawn. Then water immediately. Will kill all weeds but not the grass. Give it try.....😊..Apply by hand or a spreader. Or apply just to the weeds you can identify.
Can’t say I’ll try that one
Not sure where you are in the country but it looks like it might be in my general area. I deal with all the same weeds year after year. The yard that came with the house I’m not sure had ever been treated. I’m a work in progress at this point lol.
I’m in Michigan. I get the same culprits every year too. I even put down pre-emergent this year! Hey you’re not alone - all of our lawns are in progress!
@@TheLawnMentor I’m not northwestern PA. Same climates, same turf, same issues. I’m loving the videos man. It’s nice to see a lawn care UA-camr fighting my fight.
I’ll keep them coming!
What poison do think you can kill lesser Celestine. It’s has a pretty yellow flower but multiplies like crazy !
You may have to use glyphosate
I have used 2,4 D aka "killex" (brand name) for years to control broad leaf weeds with excellent results. Unfortunately it's not available in Canada anymore. Do you or anybody know any online seller for that particular herbicide? Thank you very much.
I’ve never heard of it before by that brand name
Same in Texas.
Do you ever use a pre-emergent at the beginning of spring or maybe as early as February?
Yes I do. I do split apps of Prodiamine. One around March/April and another around may
Prodiamine twice a year. I use it from March until June. In fact I’m putting it down still (I have around 200 customers on my routes and about 1000 customers total.) also remember you can not reseed until September or so after using it.
I personally use Lebanon Pro 14-0-0 with .38% prodiamine at a rate of 3.5-4.6lbs/1000sqft depending on what I’m trying to keep from growing (4.6lbs for the toughest things)
Whats best for wild violets in Bermuda or Fescue ?
Can’t speak for Bermuda but in my fescue I use T Zone or Speed Zone
It would really help if you showed the weeds your refuring to in video it might help us uneducated one..
I created another video recently that’ll help you identify weeds with a free smart phone app - you should check it out!
@The Lawn Mentor Hello LM, i just so happened to have installed an app on that today . Let's see how well it works ?
How did you identify the different weed in the yard?
I use a free app called “Picture This” to let my phone tell me what the weed is
Should I cut my grass short before spraying? Thanks
No, it’s usually recommended to not apply immediately after a cut
Can I use this in or around a garden?
You’d have to be very careful it wasn’t sprayed on any of the plants you don’t want harmed
You truly need triclopyr for violets. 24-D won’t touch violets and dicamba needs respirated every week or two
I prefer T Zone or SpeedZone for those!
What can I use for new lawns tho? I planted a new lawn it’s germinating but I have weeds coming out with it? I want something that’s safe and won’t kill my new grass seeds
If you didn’t use mesotrione at the time of seeding, wait a few mowings to apply any weed control and you should be godi
Lazer certainly is the best blue dye.
I’m pretty sure it’s 1 oz per gallon to treat 200 sq ft. Did you really put 5 oz in one gallon? Did anything bad happen?
I did and I likely covered 1k sq ft of turf
@@TheLawnMentor so as long as you can cover the 1k with 1 gallon it’s cool to go a higher concentrate?
Black plastic over a area for a week or 2 kills everything and bakes weed seed
Keyword: Everything
@@TheLawnMentor that’s what your going for though when you use non selective weed/lawn killers for larger areas right ? More natural way of doing it and not having chemicals on the surface of the top soil when you inevitably replant that section of grass. I’m all for using chemicals believe me, but for what you were looking to tear up and reseed I figured that might be a better route for you ?
@@Ramcat_Vlogs it’s a good option if you want it all dead
Much prefer knowing the ratio of the chemical to water…for example, 1 part weed killer to 25 parts water. Also, more important to which is the best weed killer, is the solution harmful to humans? I love using roundup for garden cleanup a week before seeding, but is it harmful
All this info can be found in the label of the herbicide your thinking of using. Another important reason to read the label
@@TheLawnMentor We have bird feeders. what do you think of spot treatment with a vinegar soap mix ?
@@jmack619 never done it but that will kill your existing Turf too. It’s Non selective
They are all different. Mostly what you should remember is the label will give you multiple application rates. Chemicals should mostly be a last resort (although I don’t follow my own advice). Most chemicals will tell you X amount per 1000sqft. This can be diluted how you like but make sure to use enough to kill the weed and not cause chemical resistance.
@@jmack619 vinegar fries EVERYTHING including yellow nut sedge. Only use as a last resort. OR use a qtip and only brush the targeted weed with the solution. Be aware runoff will kill turf as mentioned.
Crab grass!
🤔🤔🤔
Tenacity
I ONLY use that for seeding. Otherwise there’s many more effective Post emergent
If I didn't have weeds, I wouldn't have a lawn....lol
I thought 2 4 D was banned years ago.
Don’t think so?
Why do you consider clover a weed
Because I don’t want it in my lawn
I found a treatment that is not a pesticide, for clover:
Mix 1 gallon vinegar
2 cups Epsom salt
1/4 cup Dawn dish soap
Mix & Spray on the clover, it’ll turn brown, then pull it out.
These do not look like a good option since they use harmful chemicals.
Fair enough
U talk tooooooo much
Kthx
I want something that kills weeds but not grass and not harm dogs or pets.
As long as you let herbicide dry, it shouldn’t be harmful to your pets
Spectracide Weed Stop for Lawns Plus Crabgrass. Thank me later.
