This painting really surprised me.. There was such depth and dimension achieved..
This is a 20" by 24" gallery wrap canvas, that I flooded first with black acrylic paint. I did an open cup technique using my four metallic colours.
Szrgent Copper
Pebeo gold
Pebeo silver
Sennelier Abstract Bronze
Meeden black
In the beginning .. I speak a bit about how I mix my paints for this style of painting..
I want the shapes to hold and not spread.. so it is a small mound on a mound.. that disappears quickly..
3 to 4 parts Floetrol to 1 part paint..
a very small squirt of water mixed with a little Floetrol... if necessary..
It is important that all paints are the same consistency..
The painting started with an open cup technique... layering my 4 metallics with black between each layer..
I tilted and stretched to bring the colours and cells up from under the layers. I was surprised that none of the silver and only a little gold showed in the painting.
I then did the series of large shmears to create movement throughout the piece... I used Golden's high flow gold..
with a straw for a high flow blowover..
It is good to consider your overall composition when placing the high flow elements..
More small shmears for detail.. and I was quite amazed.. at the depth and 3D effect achieved..
I am hoping to continue this series , to see if I can create this effect on an even larger canvas.

GAIL, It's a really strange sense I get from the colors in this painting. Perhaps is that it is the black against the metallics that gives me these feelings but its a since of looking at on " Old Masters" painting of centuries gone by.. I can't explain it at all and too, perhaps the music plays a role as well but it.almost feels like a still of some old world artifacts sitting on an antiques 17th century French antique desk. of course I know it is abstract and there's nothing of that sort , but nonetheless that's the feeling I have and of course it is enjoyable. Truly, who does not enjoy the work of old masters who had such limited resources for painting what they saw and felt. I'm indeed very thankful that people have been able to protect and preserve those masterpieces. But yeah, this was a pretty painting with 4 very simple colors. Thank you for sharing it with us. I think, so far, in my own journey I have learned a lot about myself and my own style of art.

The gold reminds me of some of the old Dutch masters.
I love how you can transform A painting with your “ schmilers“. At eight minutes, to me, this look like an elephant walking away for me (if you know what I mean)No it’s just a beautiful painting. It has wonderful movement, even without silver. As always I love your copper and how you use it.
