My mom and dad are from Compton. The house my mom grew up in on Carlin Ave has since been torn down but a few years ago they drove by my dad's house on Castlegate Ave and said it looked pretty good. The homes in general looked pretty good. Still the city didn't get a reputation for nothing.
What made Compton so dangerous is the gangs are in such close proximity to one another. In South Central and Watts most gangs are divided by major streets.
A couple of blocks over is another gang, cross a Main Street and another gang is over there. There’s Pirus, Crips and Mexican gang within close proximity that don’t like each other.

Once you make you your way out of the Willowbrook(south of Watts) area it becomes nicer, theres two sides of Compton. Ive been delivering in south LA for the pass few years and hands down Watts and South Central are worse than Compton.
There was a shooting everyday in Compton for like 4-6 months last year. And LA murder rate is 6.4 while Compton is 18.6. I’ll let those two things speak for itself.

In Perth West Australia where I live we have nothing resembling the US hoods, there are suburbs which are less desirable than others obviously and I wouldn’t be remotely intimidated by walking even the least desirable suburbs at night.
