This only talks about the gameplay, but holy crap, the NPCs are excruciating and the cutscenes/exposition dumps are constantly in the way of this gameplay, so if it is your cup of tea, you can't sip it until it's already too cold. I groaned every time the intercom beeped to tell me I was about to get another one-sided conversation from an NPC that was always the longest possible way to get their point across, and usually it was a redundant point. This game beats you over the head with its exposition and it makes me SO glad that Kojima is nowhere near Silent Hill.

But in this game, I found it juvenile, as if a teenager had written it for a school project. Then, the characters...Fragile not that fragile? Sam Porter Bridges who makes bridges? Die hardman because he's hard to kill? Princess beach? That kind of stuff takes me out of it right away. The whole game is basically Kojima's hollywood star-riddled passion project and I'm not for that kind of stuff. I loved the MGS series, Nier Automata and other such games. So Kojima's diss of NA players only liking shooter games is again another proof of the mental state he's in. Him and his newest game come off as quite pretentious.
Characters are exactly what they're supposed to be - concepts to help explain the lore and stuff in the world. Like Deadman being an amalgamation of other people's oragans, thus having no "soul" of his own and thus having no "beach" limbo. Or Mama and Lokne sharing the same limbo, cause they're, in essence, a single being, a single soul. And no, Die-hardman got this nickname, cause his real name is John McClane. They don't use real names between each other. Mama's real name is Målingen, they tell you that, but still never use it between each other. Cause it's just an "online nickname". Funny how a dude with a fictional character' name talks about it. As for "Kojima's diss of NA players only liking shooter games" - he is right. And no, it has nothing to do with shooting or shooters themselves, but with instantaneous dopamine release without any effort ( especially for kids ). That's why sex (porn) sells. My biggest problem with it is how absolutely everything have to be a big project. Everything needs to be charged. And BB you need to go to base just to charge it up just because the demon areas freaked it out. I have no trouble with patience, but even the smallest things in this game is patience. Even like you said with BT's. If you get caught it drags you a long distance from where you were caught and have to go back to gather what you lost. And my god how many times i've had to leave my truck with full of resources because the area doesn't have network coverage. And have to comfort BB is so uneccessary when you have to push endless buttons and wait 10 seconds. It's things like this that made me hate the game. It fucks you over with these things. It's like Kojima is trolling you. Just normal upgrades to your gear instead of having to re-charge everything is so much more rewarding. And yeah the obvious. Long and boring deliveries through the same locations over and over again i guess is a matter of taste, but i couldn't handle it on top of all the other small stuff i mentioned. It's like watching a 5-hour speech by Joe Biden.

Agreed fully on every point here. All of my friends love this game and won't ever shut the fuck up about it. I'm sick of my pseudo-intellectual friends giving me longform verbal literary analysis about a 'game' where you are delivery driver that uses a psychic baby to throw grenades made out of his shit and piss at ghosts. I have about 60 people blocked on steam, and about a quarter of them were these pseuds who would non stop try to get me to play this game with them. There isn't even multiplayer. Hideo Kojima did something incredible with this though. To make something this bad does require 'exceptional' talent. He managed to create a game devoid of gameplay, with A-list actors who didn't act, in a story that doesn't have an introduction or conclusion. i recently played this game too but the director's cut edition, It is walking Simulator game confirmed. But also gets the idea of what Hideo Kojima trying to tell us with this game. This game released before the pandemic, and its about the new norm where everyone is social distancing themselves in their own homes/shelter/bunker. The only people who were outside doing all the matters of the world during the pandemic is delivery/courier as what we've seen so far during the covid pandemic. Good ideas for the game but unfortunately this game is not for everyone. I even streamed it for my friends on discord and i didn't recommend this game unless they know or like what they going to do inside the game 😂 but overall nice review and #ihatewindfarm
After skipping 8,000,457 cut scenes I walked with the presidents body on my back thinking how stupid it is I’m carrying the presidents body on my back and can’t take one of their cars. I stumbled around pressing LT and RT annoyed…checked my map and thought…oh dear god as I stumbled, tripped, and fell with sappy music playing. After about 15 min of walking and stumbling and getting aggravated I tried to kill myself by jumping off a cliff and instead he tripped down the cliff without falling. After this I uninstalled the game…AWFUL BORING AGGIVATING GAME. If they want to make this game even remotely worth it…remove walking completely. I never want to walk in a game again. Imagine grand theft auto way off the map and you have crashed your vehicle and you gotta run across 1/4 of the map to get to one. That’s this entire start of the game, I didn’t have the patience to get past it.

I think it's a trekking simulator with elements of delivering goods and construction, interspersing the use of vehicles in the process, as well as having combat elements. Of course, there is also the mission to reconnect the country by going from city to city to connect them in the game's Internet of sorts, the Chiral Network. Death Stranding is essentially a game focused on management (the load conditions, the main character, the weight carried, the balance when walking when facing the game's physics, etc.), strategy (the best route to reach a certain destination, which is the best trail to move around the terrain, which equipment to use, which method to approach when dealing with enemies, etc.) and construction (of structures for the character to use to facilitate movement to the destination). Furthermore, the story provides the character's main mission, which is to connect all cities in the USA to a type of Internet, called the Chiral Network, essential for reconnecting cities and rebuilding an already devastated world. I believe that playing Death Stranding adds a very rich learning experience from a cognitive point of view and a poetic and artistic experience. But, it is a simulator, which tends to have a simulator pace, that is, detailed, full of variables, which tends to be slow, focused on management and strategy, and it is not recommended to play in a hurry (as this makes the game boring). The game play itself isn't rewarding enough....and just moving around is a pain in the ass. Just the fact the moving cargo from Point A to Point B is tedious and annoying. I'm 5 hours in and I'm bored out of my mind. The story is fucking cool but the game play sucks ass in my opinion.

On top of all the valid points in this video, I just wanna add that the pop up menu's are confusing in addition to the tiny text they use. I have a 52" big screen tv and had to get up close several times to read it all. I put in 11hrs to this game cause i kept telling myself "its gonna get better......its gonna get better" and I finally erased it from my system.
Got it free on Epic and was excited to play it at last. But it's just a load of exctructiatingly boring gameplay accompanied by dreadful songs. Plus the credits for the game last for about 20 minutes (how many times do we need to see Hideo's name?). The graphics are phenomenal and the weirdness/horror is temporarily interesting, but cannot save a giant turd of a game.

Just downloaded this game a day ago and put in about 10hrs. The story seemed solid but the game play was a chore. To put it simply, you have to do a bunch of boring stuff to progress a good story. Fck that. I'll just find a video explaining the game's story and call it a day. So disappointing.

You just don't get it. This is a Kojima game and if you don't get it then it's your fault. Since the game is currently free in the epic store, i installed and played it...and i must say i have never laughed so hard. This is not a game, it's an interactive (very..veeery bad) film. I pressed E 5 times and walked for about 2 minutes in the first 60 minutes of "gameplay". Afterwards I was praised for how well I had completed my mission, how many points I had scored, how heavy the packages were and so on. That is just ridiculous. It's a wonder I didn't get 10 achievements for the first 2 packages. The story is so insane that I can't even comment on it... Someone who has absolutely zero talent when it comes to writing stories should not be making games. Otherwise you'll end up with shit like this...

Death Stranding was unfairly criticized as just a walking simulator when it was released. It is actually a really complex hiking simulator where you have to carefully manage your gear and cargo. There are ghostly beings that you can choose to either stealthily avoid or fight with various weapons. You eventually get a variety of guns later in the game. This is a great game if you like handling the logistics of package delivery and you like interesting sci fi stories. DS is not meant to be a game for everyone. It is a really big budget and really weird art house indie game for people who are looking for something different than the usual fare. The game is very slow paced and requires commitment to get to the good parts later in the game. Daniel, you mentioned that you like Metal Gear Solid in a previous stream. Do a series of videos on the whole MGS series including the old MSX games, MGS1 - MGSV, and MGS Peace Walker. Many have considered MGS3 to be the best in the series.

There is some customization. In between deliveries you can change the color of your gear and you can customize your backpack by changing the placement of pouches and other things that affect your stats on it. These pouches can carry extra consumable items. Before you begin every delivery you need to customize your load out and make sure that you have an optimal balance between your cargo, ropes, ladders, weapons, repair spray, and other items.
I absolutely despise the term "walking simulator" as that is an already defined genre that this game is definitely not. Call it a postman pat simulator if you want to talk down on it. The main game loop is about delivering packages, which sounds weird and uninteresting. But there is a strategical element in that how you plan the delivery matters in how easy it is; how much cargo, what aids to bring, weaponry considerations, weather and terrain considerations, planning a route. And the long term strategic goal of spending time in the game to make everything more easy by having upgraded equipment, improve your stats, benefit from increased connections and so on. And there is a tactical element to combat; fist and body fighting, stealth, and a vast array of really unique weaponry with never before seen game mechanics; sticky guns and slippery grenades? And obviously where other games makes fetch quests a repetitive chore, this game really delivers on the game mechanics supporting fetch questing and making them challenging and unique. Also the deliveries makes sense wrt what kind of items you bring the various people. And he didn't really touch on why this is an absolute masterpiece for so many; the story, the storytelling, cinematography, the complete polish. The game being kinda Kafkaesque in its approach to storytelling is bound to throw some off, feeling like a weird crazy mess. The slow pacing feeling (deliberately) very lonely, will also throw some off - you may not like chess but ask a chess player if its a good game. Stick around until the end, and for most it's all gonna make sense. The main storyline is the one presented to the player; what is the Death Stranding and how to stop it. There is a second storyline that the player will be pretty much forced to discover as the game chugs along, and there is enough clues in the cutscenes, chat, and lore, to make you either go "wtf" at the reveals, or as most do, yelling a "called it". There is even a third mystery in there (imo), and all the clues are in the same place; cutscenes, chat, and lore - however, what's supposed to trigger a "wait, there is more to this?" is pretty much obscured until you decide to play the game past the ending and doing some very specific deliveries. And now you have to replay the game to notice those clues. Possibly many times. But I'm not gonna spoil what mystery #2 (easy to "find" and guess if you pay attention) or mystery #3 (damn near impossible to "find" and even harder to decipher), and I can't - after having watched 30+ let's plays (still going) - claim with 100% certainty that I'm right with my theories. I'm an avid "let's watcher" - but Death Stranding is pretty much the only game I've watched since it came out. And every time I notice something I've missed. It's a Kojima game. It's supposed to be deeply philosophical. It's supposed to challenge the psyche and not be braindead entertainment. It's not supposed to be solely on game play or action based mechanics. Some call it a masterpiece. Others a once in a lifetime experience. So I couldn't disagree more with this so-called "review". I get it's not for everyone. Neither is chess. Or Sims. Or GTA. i recently played this game too but the director's cut edition, It is walking Simulator game confirmed. But also gets the idea of what Hideo Kojima trying to tell us with this game. This game released before the pandemic, and its about the new norm where everyone is social distancing themselves in their own homes/shelter/bunker. The only people who were outside doing all the matters of the world during the pandemic is delivery/courier as what we've seen so far during the covid pandemic. Good ideas for the game but unfortunately this game is not for everyone. I even streamed it for my friends on discord and i didn't recommend this game unless they know or like what they going to do inside the game 😂 but overall nice review and #ihatewindfarm
After skipping 8,000,457 cut scenes I walked with the presidents body on my back thinking how stupid it is I’m carrying the presidents body on my back and can’t take one of their cars. I stumbled around pressing LT and RT annoyed…checked my map and thought…oh dear god as I stumbled, tripped, and fell with sappy music playing. After about 15 min of walking and stumbling and getting aggravated I tried to kill myself by jumping off a cliff and instead he tripped down the cliff without falling. After this I uninstalled the game…AWFUL BORING AGGIVATING GAME. If they want to make this game even remotely worth it…remove walking completely. I never want to walk in a game again. Imagine grand theft auto way off the map and you have crashed your vehicle and you gotta run across 1/4 of the map to get to one. That’s this entire start of the game, I didn’t have the patience to get past it.

Thank you for the excellent and funny analysis, I agree with the points raised. For me, Death Stranding is a simulator, and it's not just a walking simulator. I think it's a trekking simulator with elements of delivering goods and construction, interspersing the use of vehicles in the process, as well as having combat elements. Of course, there is also the mission to reconnect the country by going from city to city to connect them in the game's Internet of sorts, the Chiral Network.
Death Stranding is essentially a game focused on management (the load conditions, the main character, the weight carried, the balance when walking when facing the game's physics, etc.), strategy (the best route to reach a certain destination, which is the best trail to move around the terrain, which equipment to use, which method to approach when dealing with enemies, etc.) and construction (of structures for the character to use to facilitate movement to the destination). Furthermore, the story provides the character's main mission, which is to connect all cities in the USA to a type of Internet, called the Chiral Network, essential for reconnecting cities and rebuilding an already devastated world.
I believe that playing Death Stranding adds a very rich learning experience from a cognitive point of view and a poetic and artistic experience. But, it is a simulator, which tends to have a simulator pace, that is, detailed, full of variables, which tends to be slow, focused on management and strategy, and it is not recommended to play in a hurry (as this makes the game boring). If someone can accept that, I think they tend to have a good experience.
Although Death Stranding has a complex story, it does not have an engaging plot and its development is quite slow. Furthermore, the stories involving the delivery points we need to visit are shallow, usually just involving the description of each location's supply needs. In reality, most of the time, Death Stranding proves to be a great simulator. The emphasis of Death Stranding is on the gameplay experience, on the emotions and sensations that come from there.
Therefore, the game really focuses on gameplay mechanics (as simulators in general do). Most of the time, we have to go from one point to another, whether to make a delivery or connect a certain point to the game's Internet (the Chiral Network), facing obstacles along the way, with scenarios taking time to change. Therefore, the game ends up becoming repetitive if the player's expectations are not aligned with the game's proposal. In reality, even though Death Stranding presents changes in scenarios and situations, the game's great variation lies in the variety of routes across the terrain that can be taken and the multiple combinations of equipment and tactics that can be adopted, and the experience of all this, with the emotions and sensations derived from that experience.

Considering all this, I think the most important thing in Death Stranding is not the end, but the process of moving forward. With that in mind, what happens at the ends of missions is less important than what happens in the middle. The sense of progression in Death Stranding lies in improving yourself and increasing your own experience, helping others in the process. If someone can accept that, they tend to have a good experience.

Dojt know if i cn say ill never buy a game by hm again but what i can say is. I will absolutely never day one purchase a kojima game agian. I did it with this game because of his track record of the metal gear games which i really enjoy. Never again, after this game.

On top of all the valid points in this video, I just wanna add that the pop up menu's are confusing in addition to the tiny text they use. I have a 52" big screen tv and had to get up close several times to read it all. I put in 11hrs to this game cause i kept telling myself "its gonna get better......its gonna get better" and I finally erased it from my system.

Got it free on Epic and was excited to play it at last. But it's just a load of exctructiatingly boring gameplay accompanied by dreadful songs. Plus the credits for the game last for about 20 minutes (how many times do we need to see Hideo's name?). The graphics are phenomenal and the weirdness/horror is temporarily interesting, but cannot save a giant turd of a game.
I .... kinda like. Got a work vibe to it. Setting up the Infrastructure to stream line deliveries is kinda cool. I wish the enemies were more challenging and varied.
Just downloaded this game a day ago and put in about 10hrs. The story seemed solid but the game play was a chore. To put it simply, you have to do a bunch of boring stuff to progress a good story. Fck that. I'll just find a video explaining the game's story and call it a day. So disappointing.

You just don't get it. This is a Kojima game and if you don't get it then it's your fault. The game only makes sense to geniuses and the gameplay is bad on purpose in order to teach out that frustration is part of reality. If this wasn't a Kojima game then yes, it's a 4/10, but IT IS a Kojima game so it's a 10/10. The game is perfect.

i literally gave up in ch3 too too many things and backtracking you have to do on steroids it takes like 40-50 to traverse areas - no fun

I do enjoy some metal gear games but even those have long as cut scenes and gameplay is little irritating as the camera always fights with you and your characters movement so damn slow.

Since the game is currently free in the epic store, i installed and played it...and i must say i have never laughed so hard. This is not a game, it's an interactive (very..veeery bad) film. I pressed E 5 times and walked for about 2 minutes in the first 60 minutes of "gameplay". Afterwards I was praised for how well I had completed my mission, how many points I had scored, how heavy the packages were and so on.
That is just ridiculous. It's a wonder I didn't get 10 achievements for the first 2 packages. The story is so insane that I can't even comment on it...
Someone who has absolutely zero talent when it comes to writing stories should not be making games. Otherwise you'll end up with shit like this...

Death Stranding was unfairly criticized as just a walking simulator when it was released. It is actually a really complex hiking simulator where you have to carefully manage your gear and cargo. There are ghostly beings that you can choose to either stealthily avoid or fight with various weapons. You eventually get a variety of guns later in the game. This is a great game if you like handling the logistics of package delivery and you like interesting sci fi stories. DS is not meant to be a game for everyone. It is a really big budget and really weird art house indie game for people who are looking for something different than the usual fare. The game is very slow paced and requires commitment to get to the good parts later in the game. Daniel, you mentioned that you like Metal Gear Solid in a previous stream. Do a series of videos on the whole MGS series including the old MSX games, MGS1 - MGSV, and MGS Peace Walker. Many have considered MGS3 to be the best in the series.
Despite it being a delivery game, your explenation actually got me interested. Also DS stands for dark souls or souls alike games. Is there costimization for the game?
There is some customization. In between deliveries you can change the color of your gear and you can customize your backpack by changing the placement of pouches and other things that affect your stats on it. These pouches can carry extra consumable items. Before you begin every delivery you need to customize your load out and make sure that you have an optimal balance between your cargo, ropes, ladders, weapons, repair spray, and other items.
You don’t have to manage shit just keep an extra pair of shoes and you’ll be dandy
I absolutely despise the term "walking simulator" as that is an already defined genre that this game is definitely not. Call it a postman pat simulator if you want to talk down on it. The main game loop is about delivering packages, which sounds weird and uninteresting. But there is a strategical element in that how you plan the delivery matters in how easy it is; how much cargo, what aids to bring, weaponry considerations, weather and terrain considerations, planning a route. And the long term strategic goal of spending time in the game to make everything more easy by having upgraded equipment, improve your stats, benefit from increased connections and so on. And there is a tactical element to combat; fist and body fighting, stealth, and a vast array of really unique weaponry with never before seen game mechanics; sticky guns and slippery grenades? And obviously where other games makes fetch quests a repetitive chore, this game really delivers on the game mechanics supporting fetch questing and making them challenging and unique. Also the deliveries makes sense wrt what kind of items you bring the various people.
And he didn't really touch on why this is an absolute masterpiece for so many; the story, the storytelling, cinematography, the complete polish. The game being kinda Kafkaesque in its approach to storytelling is bound to throw some off, feeling like a weird crazy mess. The slow pacing feeling (deliberately) very lonely, will also throw some off - you may not like chess but ask a chess player if its a good game. Stick around until the end, and for most it's all gonna make sense. The main storyline is the one presented to the player; what is the Death Stranding and how to stop it. There is a second storyline that the player will be pretty much forced to discover as the game chugs along, and there is enough clues in the cutscenes, chat, and lore, to make you either go "wtf" at the reveals, or as most do, yelling a "called it". There is even a third mystery in there (imo), and all the clues are in the same place; cutscenes, chat, and lore - however, what's supposed to trigger a "wait, there is more to this?" is pretty much obscured until you decide to play the game past the ending and doing some very specific deliveries. And now you have to replay the game to notice those clues. Possibly many times. But I'm not gonna spoil what mystery #2 (easy to "find" and guess if you pay attention) or mystery #3 (damn near impossible to "find" and even harder to decipher), and I can't - after having watched 30+ let's plays (still going) - claim with 100% certainty that I'm right with my theories. I'm an avid "let's watcher" - but Death Stranding is pretty much the only game I've watched since it came out. And every time I notice something I've missed.
It's a Kojima game. It's supposed to be deeply philosophical. It's supposed to challenge the psyche and not be braindead entertainment. It's not supposed to be solely on game play or action based mechanics. Some call it a masterpiece. Others a once in a lifetime experience.
So I couldn't disagree more with this so-called "review". I get it's not for everyone. Neither is chess. Or Sims. Or GTA. Don't call it a boring game. Say it's boring for you. Want a proper review? Go watch YongYea's spoiler free review instead.
