all the creative freedom he had and this
@@kevo300 Actually that's the issue. He was given all reins and a buttload of money. What did he do? Spend majority of budget on A-list actors (mind you he barely afforded Kiefer Sutherland in MGSV on a 80 milllion budget) and reduce a workload of animation as the act man pointed out. Which is why game came out relatively quick. End result: Sony got dissapointed in sales and will hand Kojima a much smaller budget for next game and hopefully someone to keep him in line.

Something I've learned to appreciate when it comes to Kojima is that if you just accept the goofiness, you're WAY better off.
When I first saw those monster energy drinks I just thought "Of course Kojima would do that" and went about my day.
I then proceeded to do actions in the mirror for a good 5 minutes because Sam is such an awkward goofball.

for me this game scratches an itch that like, no other game does. i love the feeling of planning out what i need to bring on my expedition, plotting a route on my map, following along as best i can or suddenly having to adapt to an unexpected variable, the feeling of taking a break halfway through where you find a little nook or cranny where you can let Sam rest and at the same time, get up from your chair and go make some food, then come back 15 minutes later and continue your journey..
nothing beats that.
I have a feeling this concept would make a good movie if done right
I always like to think Kojima is a Film Director before he's a Video Game Designer.
@@thephilosopher7173 That's actually his dream job. He never wanted to make games, he wanted to make movies but could never get into a film school so he found his way into the game industry through his job as a writer that later got him to be a director...that should explain why Kojima over-sells what his game can be: because he really doesn't know the technical aspects of how to create a game, but knows how to write overly-convoluted plots (the complete oppositve to John Carmack).

I love this game. It's so absurdist. I love that it can take you ages to get up a mountain just to fall all the way back to the begining. It's great, and I'm really glad they got to make the game they wanted to make.
So why is this lovable In kojima games but hateful and the annoying in others?
@@cristobalbalenciaga7295 It depends on whether the player experience successfully mirrors the game designer's intention, I think
@@Frosty-kz4om but you don’t know every developers Intentiond. Yet something like trying your best to climb a mountain, falling and starting all over would ONLY be loved in a kogima game.
@@cristobalbalenciaga7295 I think it's because the core mechanic of death stranding is terrain traversal, each mission you set out on is a sort of gamble between efficiency and failure. Do you carry less cargo to make the journey easier, or more cargo to make more money on the trip? Do you bring a lot of traversal tools like ropes and ladders and further overburden yourself or bring less and risk having to take a longer or more dangerous route around a mountain? The game was specifically designed to make traversal the focal point of conflict. I don't think any other game has done that before. So with most games if you fall climbing up a mountain it's usually disappointing because the challenge of the game is a dungeon or something at the top of mountain (i.e. the destination you are trying to go), not the journey of actually getting there.
@@CraigJS91 but you don’t know what the intentions of a developer are. The intentions might as well be both the dungeon as well as the journey to get there.
But again, when kojima does it, it has to come from a place of brilliance. But when an other developer does it, it’s nothing more than annoying/dissapointing

True. Perhaps they're trying to say that Death Stranding is particularly niche though.
Certain games are obvious who they are for (fps, rts, turn based, RPGs, racing games, and sports games). I would say this game is a walking simulator but it is not obvious to a lot of ppl because of who made it and the fact there is guns, survival elements, and horror elements.
@@mBowK the game is really fascinating to me... its really calming when you walk around "america" and when the music starts, it really sucks you in
@Azazel There's 9 billion people on the planet. I'm sure you aren't the only one. I wouldn't call him a genius so much as a creative revolutionary. Just his Metal Gear series alone pushed the boundaries on genres (invented stealth action), cinematic cutscenes, character development, and storytelling. There's hardly a blockbuster made today that hasn't been at least a little (and sometimes a lot) influenced by his work.
There is a lot of 'Japanese' cheese that makes it a lot harder for the western audience to get into his games. That said, they are all very poignant for many different reasons. Metal Gear Solid was one of the very first cinematic fully voiced video games in the industry. Kojima was one of the first that bridged the divide between video games and the big screen. Beyond pioneering this, he also has pioneered the stealth action genre of games. He is one of the most influential names in the industry along with many other greats. That said I understand why his games turn off a lot of people, the same way that Anime is highly beloved world wide but almost always makes me cringe when I watch it.
But where his genius lies to me, is his direct dissection of Western Culture, and tackling deep themes that are systemic in our culture and affects the rest of the world. He's an incredibly intelligent and learned man, and most people that can get through his games from beginning to end will quickly figure that out.
Death Stranding, I personally thought was a masterpiece. It's one of the few games in the last five years I was able to finish from beginning to end. Had an incredible story. But mixed between 40+ hours of exploration gameplay I can see why it turned many people off.
Playing this game is like reading blame for the first time. They expect a lot from the audience
Oh I love that series. The movie was underrated.

@@xxXXRAPXXxx Thats the kojima thing, if you play a kojima game, you play it for kojima content, non-stop exposition included
@@_laryssa Its my first kojima game and i do not know if i dig this. We shall see.
This game is divisive because its core premise for gameplay is one that isn't really implemented to this degree in pretty much any other game.
Needing to plan out your route, adapt on the fly to changing terrain and storms (or bandits), and then successfully pulling off everything is a feeling of accomplishment I haven't felt in many games before. Yet just like going on a hike is in real life - it takes time and some effort, so if you're just looking for quick action you aren't going to enjoy it. The accomplishment is in successfully overcoming the minute to minute navigation and managing longer trips - without that challenge and without the constraints, there wouldn't be much to this game.
I greatly enjoyed this game, and I'm hardly a Kojima fan - I have yet to ever play the Metal Gear Solid games (though I have seen them played and am quite familiar with them indirectly).
It has some questionable decisions at times, such as how long it takes to do anything when resting in terms of long animations and the like. But the actual navigation elements are the selling point of this game, and only people who actually enjoy needing to plan out their moment to moment route and do pathfinding will enjoy it. For those of us who do, it's an extremely unique experience.
but you would get the same thing from just going on a hike, like seriously your not wrong but when you come home after work to have fun, do you really want to do something in a game that you could just do irl (I know you said that in your comment but still, it's a game and if you really wanted that experience then why not actually experience it). I respect your view on this, but even the route finding can be had in a lot of open world games, like Days Gone for example, and it's fun yes, but to make that into the entire concept of a game with a complete disregard for proper (and arguably interesting) story narrative seems like a bit of stretch.
Again no disrespect and I respect your opinion because what you have said is correct, but to have it considered to be a good game on par with other triple A titles is (again) a stretch.
@@noahrodricks5923 First of all, going on a hike requires going out of the house and finding a good spot. Secondly, going on a hike doesn't tend to involve you carrying ladders and other items with you, or jumping into vehicles on the fly to navigate, or dealing with mind-numbing horrors or bandits. It also requires you be in a certain level of physical fitness, and you can't take extreme risks because in real life you might end up falling off a cliff in a way you can't get back up from.
Yes, I want to do things in a game I can do in real life if the experience itself is enjoyable.
I don't see how you can argue that Death Stranding lacks a "story narrative," though. It very clearly has one of those, and it is brought together by all of your interactions and movements as you move through the story. Unless by lacking a "story narrative" you mean to say "I dislike its pacing," which is entirely subjective.
@@noahrodricks5923Dude have you Heard of the Sims or Farming Simulator 😆
@@echomjp No, I'm saying the pacing is shit and the game narrative is what you would call 'hanging off threads' which basically means that throughout the game it lacks key features that should be in any good story,
1. The villain does not have a motive for his actions, and is just said that he wants to see the world burn. The shit thing about this is that the line of who this comes from is in reference with the joker, actually had a motive in the dark knight, which was to prove the innate madness of men. Higgs doesn't have some secret motive like the joker, and he's not even looking for power cause if he really wanted to he could have killed Sam whenever he wanted, and he makes this clear as well. this meaning his reason for his actions being 'seeing the world burn' is a poorly written, cope-out for why a villain is a villain, like I could understand if he worshiped the BT's but he doesn't, he just controls them to a degree.
2. Sam, the main character has no real relationships in game due to his Aphenphosmphobia, meaning he doesn't empathise, he doesn't ever truly interact with anyone, and he doesn't have anything for the player to relate to expect maybe he loss, which is the main theme of the story, and yet there isn't any revelation to this nor him coming to terms with this, his simply completes objectives given to him. The curve ball of this is that he speaks, which doesn't make sense for the character they were going for. They should have either made him more relatable or had him a silent protagonist, not some in-between cause it doesn't work.

Doesn't help with immersion either that just about every character is a homunculus wearing the skin of a celebrity pulled from your TV or entertainment news feed. How do I take these people seriously when all I see is The Walking Dead, My Neighbour Del Toro-san, and the villain from Casino Royale?
The game answers a lot of these questions as you go along, but I can definitely see what you mean. Besides delivering packages, I thought this was one of the best games I've played...but not because of the gameplay exactly. The final chapters were incredible...the final bosses, the one scene where it's like an old-timey fighting game with Troy Baker's character, and the cutscenes. As far as the main character being unlikeable..I can see that as well, but I like that he didn't fit into the typical mold of a protagonist. Idk, I liked how odd and convoluting everything was...I also like things with a lot of dialogue/context. xD
It should have just been an animated film/series, then. It's like they have a good story, but couldn't be bothered with the gameplay, so flipped a coin, then span a few wheels, and it landed on post-apocalyptic postman.
Like, sure, liking it due to the story being good makes much more sense, but a game doesn't be need to tell a story in the first place/it's not what they're for. Games are mainly for the gameplay, stories have always been a secondary component after the story. People want to have fun controlling the funny man on the screen.
If the gameplay is awful, but the story is good, it's more just a glorified film.
Maybe, but I think fits more into the category of being a specific niche within gaming. To me, it was just another game with a different style of playing. It's not for every player. Idk, I didn't think it was a glorified film, just my take. I should've added that I did enjoy more of the gameplay aspect - building structures with other players, having a sense of connection, and delivering packages actually felt kind of therapeutic to me. lol@@maximusstorm1215
@@maximusstorm1215 I wouldn't say the gameplay is bad, but more so that the gameplay isn't conventional, it is inherently something that some people will despise and see zero appeal in, and some will absolutely adore, and I'm in the latter camp frankly.

Death Stranding is what you get when there is nobody around to say "No" to Kojima.
Much like John Romero and Ken Levine huh?
Even if that's the case, I appreciate Sony giving Kojima lots of creative freedom for when he was making this game.
If this was Konami, that's a different matter entirely.
@hokurinn no when he lost complete control of it it was a catastrophe now the angry neckbeards are what made the prequel series a tragedy because they didn't understand simple thing in the story that made it good if they actually took time to think the series is actually pretty good the only thing I didn't like were the romantic cringe love scenes
"Yo kojima wanna make a shit game your fanboys will suck it outa your ass lmao"
Same with George lucas, there needs to be less jacking off the ideas of these guys, it happens all the time it doesn't matter who it'll happen, but since kojima is listening to criticism I'm sure he'd appreciate any criticism the fans would give him and improve the next game with less dialogue and more action.

Tears, an Allergy. Ok so he is having an allergic reaction to.. Chiral?
(It's asymmetry in molecules so Sam is allergic to beings in a mirror dimension. So his Allergic reactions alert him to their presents, we wont know that. But might have heard 'Chiral' before.)

Ok, "You have dooms, its either a disease, condition or super power. Lets see.

Ok, so there are levels. Sam is at a level that allows him to sense them close by. Kindof hear/see them. But not See See them. Weird, ok.
But she can teleport. And see them. Ok, so how high does this go?
The anatomy is weird.
She's eating... Eww.. Ok, so eating those supposedly either controls the weather or is a way to treat its effects or something like this I assume.
No idea how you cannot follow. Its clear, yes there is alot you do not know. But the fucking stories conclusion isn't going to be handed to you. Clearly its complex, go along for the ride.

"It's better to be simple and deep, rather than shallow and complex".
I truly do love Hideo Kojima, but he can get REALLY up his own ass at times and needs a good co-writer or producer with him to make sure he doesn't go off the rails. The world of this game is amazing, but Kojima is just not a good screenwriter so his characters and story just suffer because of it. Give him borderline complete control over a project as writer and director and this is what happens.
I was saying that since MGS 4, on one hand you have this and on the other open any japanese J"RPG" and listen to quality of dialogues and Death Stranding will be nothing out of ordinary.

Agreed, he comes off as very pretentious and it doesn't help when people keep calling him a genius. He has an entire team that should be credited. While I loved the game and its fantastic world building. The story was full of exposition dumps and dialogue that is too on the nose. Not enough subtlety, it's a shame really. Kojima is overrated
Thank you for the excellent and funny analysis, I agree with the points raised. For me, Death Stranding is a simulator, and it's not just a walking simulator. I think it's a trekking simulator with elements of delivering goods and construction, interspersing the use of vehicles in the process, as well as having combat elements. Of course, there is also the mission to reconnect the country by going from city to city to connect them in the game's Internet of sorts, the Chiral Network.
Death Stranding is essentially a game focused on management (the load conditions, the main character, the weight carried, the balance when walking when facing the game's physics, etc.), strategy (the best route to reach a certain destination, which is the best trail to move around the terrain, which equipment to use, which method to approach when dealing with enemies, etc.) and construction (of structures for the character to use to facilitate movement to the destination). Furthermore, the story provides the character's main mission, which is to connect all cities in the USA to a type of Internet, called the Chiral Network, essential for reconnecting cities and rebuilding an already devastated world.
I believe that playing Death Stranding adds a very rich learning experience from a cognitive point of view and a poetic and artistic experience. But, it is a simulator, which tends to have a simulator pace, that is, detailed, full of variables, which tends to be slow, focused on management and strategy, and it is not recommended to play in a hurry (as this makes the game boring). If someone can accept that, I think they tend to have a good experience.
Although Death Stranding has a complex story, it does not have an engaging plot and its development is quite slow. Furthermore, the stories involving the delivery points we need to visit are shallow, usually just involving the description of each location's supply needs. In reality, most of the time, Death Stranding proves to be a great simulator. The emphasis of Death Stranding is on the gameplay experience, on the emotions and sensations that come from there.
Therefore, the game really focuses on gameplay mechanics (as simulators in general do). Most of the time, we have to go from one point to another, whether to make a delivery or connect a certain point to the game's Internet (the Chiral Network), facing obstacles along the way, with scenarios taking time to change. Therefore, the game ends up becoming repetitive if the player's expectations are not aligned with the game's proposal. In reality, even though Death Stranding presents changes in scenarios and situations, the game's great variation lies in the variety of routes across the terrain that can be taken and the multiple combinations of equipment and tactics that can be adopted, and the experience of all this, with the emotions and sensations derived from that experience.
"Games, in general, are focused on dominating enemies. However, in Death Stranding, the focus is on mastering yourself, on managing resources well, on reaching the destination, on choosing the best route, etc., and placing appreciation in this process. Death Stranding is an experiment in self-knowledge. It is a game focused on experience, something that can only be lived, not transmitted in words." (excerpt transcribed from the video "Death Stranding: Misunderstood Masterpiece [SPOILERS]", from the Futurasound Productions channel).
Considering all this, I think the most important thing in Death Stranding is not the end, but the process of moving forward. With that in mind, what happens at the ends of missions is less important than what happens in the middle. The sense of progression in Death Stranding lies in improving yourself and increasing your own experience, helping others in the process. If someone can accept that, they tend to have a good experience.
Bro how did you get the soda from the game
So basically an interesting concept and story soured by a tedious gameplay loop. Maybe Kojima should go into filmmaking.
Considering that he's heavily inspired by it, I'm still waiting for him to make a movie XD
Well this"Bad gameplay loop" is the reason i bought this game, and love it xD
Hopefully not, his stories are total ass when he doesn't have folks to keep his rockstar attitude in check
You need to edit again... Kojima.
Jeremy Allen Ego more like.
Imagine a world where Kojima made short games, he could do all his crazy shit, without a huge time and money investment for everyone involved, and get as experimental as he wants.
Here's some incredibly well received games, Limbo, Journey, Portal. I love those and I know I could burn through them all in one day if I felt the urge. Even if I loved MGSV I can't in good conscience spend that much time on it again, but damn I know I feel comfortable giving those short games my attention and time again.
Mike Fisher I’d like Kojima to make something like the dishonored games. Short, semi open world, but with a shit ton of options and super stylish combat.
MGSV was way better than those sooooooooooo :/
@@alex-ki5wm Hey you can feel that way, but I think MGSV was plenty polarizing enough to the fanbase. Personally Venom Snake is my favorite Snake, and while some people would say it is lacking in story compared to the others, but I like it for what is there. It has so many systems that the average player might never see once in a playthrough, so many tricks and tools that you'd be forgiven to call it replayable, but something isn't better simply for being longer. Avengers Endgame was 3 hours and as much as I was worried about that, it didn't feel like it. Pacing is important, and I think many games make the mistake of stretching it's content out far too thin. MGSV included, with a few huge mostly empty sandboxes full of kinda repetitive missions. Therapeutic in your best moods, monotonous in your worst. I do think it's all intentional, because the madman that he is, wants us to feel that long realistic somewhat mundane gap of time, and be "immersed". We have lives, and some amount of time is too much to ask.
(probably like reading my response to that very short comment)
tldr, Imagine a sandwich made with an entire loaf of bread, that's a Kojima sandwich in this argument.
ivliked journey but it was short and the ending was Good mixed with dissapointment
Word around the block is that Kojima and Sony are in the talks about rebooting Silent Hill(s). So at least we have that.
Just finished it for the first time, it took 90 days hours on steam and looking at steam only 20% of all gamers have finished it. The themes of this game are very interesting, you get punished for killing, you win by building connections and getting likes from other. And that motivates you to continue helping others and hopefuly that will inspire others to contributes. it's about building 'bridges.' i spent a bunch of time building the superhighway and pretending it's route 66 but the physics of the vehicles is bad. Just really bad. Getting stuck on a rock with a bunch of cargo was frustrating. It's a fully open world that you can explore at any time BUT unlike RDR where you can visit other cities and see a show or have some interaction with NPC, ithat's completly non-existent in death stranding. So there's not really any incentive there. Hiking down a mountain with a bunch of ropes and ladders can be fun. This game explores themes like death, isolation, and loss. I think Kojima getting older and seeing his mortality had him examine these themes. The story throws out a lot of terms at you and unfortunately you have to do a lot of reading in the termianl through interviews and emails to decipher what's going on behind the scenes. Also I found it hilarious Obama, Hillary and Trump were all mentioned in the game. And the President looks similar to Hillary.
