    Sounds like it's time to hit the dispensary - I'm thinking a pair of big ol' Heim joints and a nice mellow Johnny should be just the ticket!

    I remember a trick on the 1966 Chevelle Malibu SS 396, and other muscle cars of the era, was to drive 16d nails into the rubber bushings on the links. This was before heavy-duty replacement bushings were available. "Primitive Pete"?, you bet, but it stiffened things up and reduced wheel hop. A real budget trick... :-)

    At 4:00 I believe the word you're looking for is damping. It absorbs and TRANSMITS all of the vibrations and shocks to the frame. Because it allows for greater articulation of the Axle. As opposed to a bushing which absorbs and DAMPENS those shocks/vibrations. But because it is a more rigid mount doesn't allow for as much articulation. Have you seen anyone using/offering an elastomeric bearing joint for off road use?

    good video explaining the difference. should also point out that a big reason heim joints arent really streetable is because of corrosion, and theres nothing keeping dirt out except for the tightness of the joint. if you live in the rust belt like i do, such exposed joints like that really arent an option for a daily driver.

    Could you share the measurements of the arms of a TJ

  • @MidnightMechanic
    @MidnightMechanic 6 років тому

    How come control arm manufacturers don't send mounting hardware along with their products? Different control arms come with various sized bushings and steel inserts, some with inner diameters measured to fit stock, and others are expanded slightly which requires drilling the mounting holes in both the brackets and axles in order to fit a larger bolt through. This is a pain, especially if they're not going to send you replacement hardware to match!
    Also are the polyurethane bushings supposed to be able to slide about in their sleeves, hence the reasoning behind the lubrication so they don't bind and tear? I've had bushings just straight up fail during installation, not even road tested yet, so bushing design is a huge thing to consider if you're wanting ones to last daily driving.

    Seems most aftermarket suspension (radius bars) manufactures use plastic injection (2 piece) heim joints. Found them on a used 2018 RZR Turbo I bought. The bars were fine but a $14.00 heim failed and broke a $2,000.00 Fox Podium Gold series rear shock in half. It's what brought me here. Replaced all 6 with FK 3 piece heims ($29.00 ea) that will last me (non-racer) forever.

    We just need super grease that is 3times of thick as req grease to get some cushion back in Hymm set ups. If the bolt is prt of bracket that is C shaped & the bolt has neoprene bushing over it u hve as good a system w/ offset hymm big beef size as poss. The only wear prt u can change out & ultimate strength & flex & offset & mounting spot adjustment range(u pin the max travel the hymm can move on the Cbracket bolt. God/JBM

    Heims are shite for street use, they only work well as long as they are well greased, if dirt gets in them and starts grinding they start to rattle and drive you nuts. Standard bushings generally aren't too bad, PU is a nice upgrade thats still drivable every day

    • @OMCbuilt
      @OMCbuilt 6 років тому +3

      I've used Heims for years on my street cars, through northern winters when the roads are salted, in the summer through the pot holes the winter left behind and never had any problems.

    • @AutomotiveCNC

      Rod ends are like women - if they are reliable at first hand, they will serve you for a very long time. Badly developed rod ends and women need quick replacement.

      Good for traction bars? I have a 1990 k2500 that already clunks a little. How clunky are we talking about with heim joints?

  • @FatGreenSheep
    @FatGreenSheep 5 років тому +1

    I actually thought Johnny Joints were nicer than heims partially because Johnnys are rebuildable and they hold grease better than heims unless you use heim seals.

  • @stopthephilosophicalzombie9017
    @stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 3 роки тому

    Why would you replace a Heim joint after a single race? Are we assuming that each race literally takes these components almost to the point of failure?

  • @ldnwholesale8552
    @ldnwholesale8552 6 років тому

    Interesting. For a road vehicle use OEM rubber, near bullet proof and does not throw all the load back into the chassis. Though that 'Johnny joint' seems a good idea. Only though on big joints. Some OEM bushings are actually similar.
    Eurathane either binds everything up or if flexible enough falls to pieces, and will not bond to the inner and outer sleeves as the OEM rubber does. So you end up with components moving all over the place. Very bad! Ok as a simple bush where not a lot of radial movement is required. Panhard or Watts links as an example. It transmits a lot of noise however. And used in high load area does and will tear the brackets off the vehicle or even break suspension arms. Very BAD!
    Heim joints are not for the street either and in some cases will still bind suspensions as the suspension relies on some flex in the bushing to prevent bind. Though when set up properly is the way to go. Generally the cheaper the worse and get 'rattly' fairly quick. Good teflon lined ones are the go and not very expensive, under $30 for a 5/8/1/2 version. 5/8 thread with a 1/2 through bolt. For offroad etc use 3/4 hi misalignment.
    The 3/8 used in F1 are stronger than the common 3/4 used in Oval track or offroad, and cost 10 times as much and are replaced every meeting!
