This is the first time Big Tire has ever popped up on my suggestions. I would have subscribed a long time ago. I am a welding instructor at a community college and I'm always trying to encourage my students to jump in on projects that intimidate them and show them that you don't need 50 grand worth of tools to make cool stuff. Anyway I've been contemplating putting airbags in my xj so I can run smaller "street tires" during my daily driving without it looking like a roller skate and hopefully some off-roading benefits as well. I'm looking forward to seeing the end results and how it performs. Thanks for the video Ian!!!

Long time ago, there was an advertisement for a new series of Mechanic shows. 1 was Muscle car, I thought ya, I love those type of cars, 2 Horse Power. Who doesn't want to know more about building more horse power. 3-Trucks. Duh, I've had a truck all my life, sign me up. 4- Extreme 4X4. What ? naa. Not interested. Then I soon after these show's started I bought a '84 Jeep CJ-7. OMG

New shop is about 90 percent done... we did some filming in part of it for Motortrend recently, and the next build for Big Tire Garage will be in the new space

I've always wanted to do the air bags on a cantilever arm and rod, keep the bag up out of the danger zone and add suspension travel with the offset in the arm.
Sucks, I can’t see this guy with out seeing Jessie. Both were such a massive staple of my childhood on weekends. Both of them contributed so much to my passion into cars/trucks. Also created so much of me and my fathers bonding on Saturday mornings.
We all still feel the loss of Jesse Combs but she lived and died doing what she loved, carry on brother that's what she would want us all to do in memory of her short time here!

I did it. In a 2 car and a driveway with a Zj. One of the hardest Jeep models to build properly. Now just looking for some place to finish her up.

Touche..."the domino effect". I'm in the middle of my very first car project - ever.
The goal: do an LS swap in a Jeep TJ. Simple right? (Stop chuckling.) Considering I didn't know what I didn't know, that simple decision has led to other major developments. Logistically, the original plan was to pull the 4.0, AX15, and NP231 and drop in the 5.3, 4l60e, and NP241C.
That easy decision morphed into a complete body-off restoration, along with all the falling dominoes that I didn't even know to anticipate:
Ford 8.8 rear-end
swap
Re-gear both axles
Install front and rear lockers
Sand-blast and POR15 the chassis (and axles)
Re-build the wiring harness myself
(Ugh!)
Change out all of the gauges because the factory gauges do not work with the GM sensors
Cut off the old and weld on new rear spring buckets
Install all new suspension - bolt-on; I didn't know how to make my own. (By the way, how does one go about learning how to build his own suspension. Are you taking on mentees?)
I learned to weld from starting this project.
It's not complete. I am currently working on the Jeep's wiring harness - another unforeseen.

@@BigTireGarage well it has been 2 years now you got the new shop for TV and YOU Tube do you still build stuff at your Garage Shop at Home off Tv AND THE INTERNET ??? that lift you were using on the build looks handy what kind of weight limits do they have ?? ,, my shop only has a 10 ft ceiling ,, I have a neck injury plus a lower back injury titanium in both locations ,, It gets hard to work on the ground under a auto ,, I have used a hoist it makes it nice ,, car ramps and jack stands are still a bit too low ,, keep up the Great Videos ,,

Every engineer ive herd talk about bump steer say you will always end up with some bump steer no matter what you do to correct it
A properly designed steering system will not have bump steer...fron the factort a car does not suffer from bump steer...so if you midify it correctly, it still won't have it.
It's all about having the same swing geometry. It can be made correct, you just have to know how to do the math.

Interesting, I'm not convinced that building a full bump is a good idea; but whatever works for the builder is absolutely correct. The problem on the rear is visualizing instant center on the rear - which makes a huge difference on how well the truck hooks. On the front, you want the suspension to be at the center of the panhard bar's arc, otherwise, the vehicle will react differently depend on the direction you turn the wheel - the other issue is that the longest panhard bar you can install is actually more important for bump steer then being identical arcs (though usually you can get pretty close). Good luck in your new venture, Ian.
Have a JKU 6pac 3.5 MC GC and have been looking into incorperating Airrock in a DIY system with an integrated CVT onboard air. So looking forward to where this goes.

When the axle drops away from the air bag, you'll have zero spring rate and the axle travel will have a dead spot with no tension pushing down on the axle. Then when you go from droop to compressed, there won't be any downforce during that period.
Yeah everyone says that, but that is a very common thing that happens in Coil Spring rigs with the axle drops away and the spring becomes unseated from the pocket

I like it good video a lot of us don't have very big shops I do my bills have a very small shop plus living off the grid really makes a challenge I'll be following your videos get getting ready to put the four link long-arm suspension in my 93 Grand Cherokee rear and a lot of us are going to the 8.8 Ford axle

Hey lan I’ve ran into a somewhat difficult position on my 02 Tacoma build. I’ve installed a snorkel kit and started my rock sliders with my exo cage but cannot figure out how to run a tube along the passenger side a pillar due to the snorkel. Any advisor tips?? Hello i have a new idea this is going to be the first on its kind i just dont have resources to build at this time , it is going to be a mono hydraulic suspension system sound impossible but if you give this a shot , it will change of all suspension system as we all know tank you

This is cool and all, great work and good filming, but this is no different then your former tv job. This is what makes UA-cam so great is that there aren’t deadlines and they don’t have to make it fit the cookie cutter “how to” show. Show us how you actually design one of these suspensions. You spent 3 mins on the rear suspension, and that was basically you just get it and weld it in. The real “shows” on UA-cam would have spent 5 days on the rear and gone through everything. I’m just saying take some time and really get into the details.
We are looking at doing some more specific "tech heavy" content....that focus on a specific part of the build....but we like the "feel" of this show so far

I think a shock ambient temp and after use temps should be taken on the test run. I'm curious to see how much they heat up controlling air ride.

Given a choice between ball joints and king pin is there a reason you went with ball joints on this project?
@big tire garage I noticed that you don’t mention pinion angle at all. Can axles be set up in this manner at basically +\- zero degrees ‘full stuff’ and then worry about adjusting the final pinion angle after dropping the axle to ride height simply by adjusting the heims? I’m curious if this is how you would set pinion angle after using the way you’ve demonstrated starting at ‘full stuff’ in this video. I’m assuming at this point in a build you’d be more concerned with having the axle centered and square over anything.

Great video . Need advice. I have a 1963 k10 suburban w/ 292 and 3.73 gears . Would like to go all disc. What year of chevy should I look for to get a front axle? Thanks in advance for any help from all Gearheads
I have doubts about letting the axle end of the bag hang free. Air-springs are not forgiving to chafing, pinching, rubbing, and over-extension. You might want to look into some triple convoluted long-travel springs and make sure both ends are fixed. In a quick search I did, I found a triple convoluted spring with 10" of travel, 4" collapsed and 14" extended, it was $120.
10" of travel is not near enough...rubbing and chaffing really won't be an issue. I am more concerned about having a suspension component without any preload on it
@@BigTireGarage How do you plan to guide the air-spring back into the pocket after it droops away?
@@eformance I am sure that you know that the spring and shock are not locating devices in a suspension system. The bag will land back in the poly locating "bucket" when the suspension compresses.

I was thinking of what would happen when the suspension drooped away from the bag as well. I don't think having only unsprung weight on contact patch is the same as having a long travel coil over with some sprung weight transferred through the spring. Your axle will be able to articulate, but the traction is going to be proportional to the normal force on the contact patch which is only going to be the weight of one tire and wheel and half of the axle and I think half the links and shocks on that side if I remember correctly. Maybe with lockers it wouldn't matter, but I would think you'd have to use the lockers a lot more often than a suspension with a 14 or 16 inch travel coil over. Once the bags are pumped up, if you have five inches of up travel you are only going to have five inches of sprung down travel before the axle and bag separate.
Anyway I enjoyed the video, but I would love to see a little more about the theory of suspension design maybe using one of the spreadsheet calculators on line. I think people are intimidated by them, but it's doesn't have to be overly complicated, and it would be good to hear from someone with experience about where to make trade offs.
@@Fix_It_Again_Tony yeah, that is my only concern to be honest, the suspension will be "unsprung" a lot sooner and there will not be any "preload" on it as well. But, I will be able to adjust weight transfer from the rear to the front by adjusting air pressure..it is by no means a coilover, but it is different.

What airbags did you use I've been looking to design an airbag system for my H3 Hummer so I can tow my trailer better. This design seems great because I also don't want to limit travel and would love for it to just drop away?

What kind of belly height are you shooting for ? (Ground to transfer/transmission crossmemeber) & for the unsprung weight issue on the bags shouldnt something like the antirock swaybar help out? But there shouldnt really be a problem being that my spring unseats from my tj most of the time when i fully flex out and disconnect my sway bar & i still get over any rock i want most of the time…….
It is getting sway bars....I want a belly height of about 20" at ride the wheelbase will work with that. As for unseating, everyone seems to worried about that, but when most jeep articulate you are right the spring has no pressure on the axle or comes unseated like you mentioned.

On the front axle, due to the track bar, at full stuff, wouldn't be centered under the frame. How do you account for push/pull of the track bar based on a static height to a full compression to a full extension?
You always build that portion of the suspension at ride height

Yep, my only conceen with this setup is the lack of preload in the system...but we will see if this works
