Showing an example of stable ship hull design would be a good idea. A line of hull shapes with the advantages and disadvantages of each one. Still a fantastic video! Also uploading the finished product of every video for the viewer to play with would be a good idea, give new players the opportunity to mess with the basic shape.
TheBorderlandsGuy Yeah, he also didn't explain that making the boat wider will stabilize it. Ideally it would be nice to go over things like: Bigger cross-sections means bigger radar and sonar return Wider = more stable Smaller front cross-section means faster.
I agree. I actually find hull construction is one of the least covered parts of From the Depths in online tutorials, and also one of the most difficult. I can get basically every other part of the game down except hull construction at this point.
@@jasonalbert6251 or helium however if your center of mass is to high but your also to heavy the helium will instead turn you upside down I know from experience and I used a keel but it still flipped and the reason for helium was I was weak low on materials and trying to escape
I'd love a PID system tutorial Lathrix, I remember you mentioned potentially making a tutorial in one of your more recent videos; that would be awesome friendo!
you dont really need one though, I actually managed to use them without a tutorial (they have really good explanations on them. basically, you need 3 pids, one for altitude, one for pitch, and one for roll. for altitude, put thrusters on the bottom, put test stim 1 to the altitude you want (if you are making a hovertank to fly at 10 metres, set it to 10) and check "test stimulus 1". for the pitch, make the front set of thrusters "thruster reverse", leave the back ones "thruster" (or maybe it was the other way around, i dont know right now, so reverse it if the vehicle starts flipping) set the second pid to "pitch", leave the test stims at 0 (that controls the pitch angle) and set it to "test stimulus 1". for roll, place another set of thrusters on the vehicle, one on the left and one on the right side, set the left ones to "roll (LHS)", the right ones to "roll reverse (RHS", put the third pid into roll mode, leave the test stims at 0 and set "test stimulus 1". Now check how fast the vehicle corrects altitude, pitch and roll (set the test stim 1 to a strange value for a short time, then change it back to normal). If the vehicle takes too long to correct any of those, set the kP.Gain higher. You now have a working hovercraft with pids.
Thank you so much for doing tutorial stuff. Every tutorial I've seen so far has been far outdated, and I could really use another perspective on building.
You are my favorite youtuber, ever. I love the games you play, you think about and incorporate your audience, for example, you review builds ( you reviewed on of mine, a Robocraft plane "Screech" ), interact with the comments, and make videos like this one. And you are actually good at the games you play. So please keep up the good work and keep making amazing videos!
Thank you for this lathrix, I got the game because of your videos and I couldn't actually play the game or find any good tutorials. I wish you the best of luck for this series and I plan on watching all of your tutorials.
I've got something like 480 hours in this game. I've wanted to design warships since I was really young. I still haven't made a single ship or plane that us consistently effective and looks even half decent. My god, please make more of these Lathrix.
I already know how to play this game so im not sure why i was so captivated watching this... I guess i just like listening to you talk Lath. and that's not awkward at all
I love that he is beginning a tutorial for FtD. I bought the game after watching all of his videos on the game. I thought after all the time I spent watching his videos I'd be able to jump in as a veteran, which did NOT happen. Detection systems and weapon AI caused me a great deal of trouble. I am very eager to see a tutorial on Advanced Cannons, Lasers and Steam Engines(very good preview a few videos ago).
Bought the game 2 days ago and I'm convinced you have to be a rocket scientist to play the game. I cant even get my boat to move forward after watching 5 videos on how to do it
This would make a good series because i know a lot of people suck at from the depths building including me. It would also give a different thing to your channel, just a thought.
I'm at a point where I've worked a lot of stuff out for myself but I know these kinds of tutorials would have been bloody brilliant when I first got the game! The learning curve of this game is craaaaazy ^^ Great game though
Two friends just bought the game, and these just robbed me from the chance to make tutorials for them. Good, because the production quality is much better. :p
Thank you for starting this tutorial thingy. I bought the game a long time ago and could never get into it because of its extreme complexity. thank you!
Thank you soooo much mate! I've been searching around for some (well made) tutorial whilst i was watching your series, cause i gotta say it really gave me interests in this game. If you do want to keep your base hull narrow but improve stability, i personally like to make little floats on both sides of the ship, they naturally counter the rocking, and also provide a fair bit of defense against hits to your side (kinda like spaced armor)
Having a tutorial for engines would be the best for the next one. For the fuel engines, I either start overheating my cylinders or just not having enough power to run weaponry and small shields. If you can explain how does that whole heating and power generation works... You would be the life saver!
800 hours in the game atm. I have not beaten a second faction in atleast 400-500 hours (since a forces campain reset from updates, i never bothered to start a real one again). I just like to think that I made profit fromthe many hours put into building and designing a ship, that turns out to be garbage, only to do the same thing again over and over again :p
okay i don't feel bad lol, I couldn't beat the DWG and i'm 178 hours in the game. I gave up at 100 hours and started cheating by having an OP workshop ship from Draba stay with the fortress at all times xd
This was amazingly helpful! As a beginner I personally suck at making ships and such. One thing I would like to see a tutorial on is a laser missile defense system if that's still a thing.
So i had a pretty cool idea for a series you could do: you would use viewer submitted vehicles but you could only use one of each vehicle. You could also name them after the viewer who submitted it.
My first attempt at a laser had a ridiculously high negative damage value. I don't think I'll ever touch them again until lath makes a tutorial on them.
Generally speaking, this is how to laser: - Set up a few couplers attached to the multipurpose laser somehow. - Add Q-Switches to the couplers. 1 switch maximises the range, 4 maximises the power/damage efficiency, and 2-3 is somewhere between. I advise that you go for 4. - Add cavities to your coupler. Use the standard ones (Not the single inputs or storage ones), and make sure to place a few. Generally speaking, add one for each 100 power on your vehicle. - Add 4 pumps to each cavity. DON'T add any frequency doublers/destabilisers yet. - Connect this setup to your combiner (the firing piece, if you'd prefer.) - Add lenses to your combiner. Steering lenses increase the field of fire and accuracy, normal ones add more accuracy than the steering ones. - Test the laser. If your damage drops (e.g goes from 100 to 60 over the course of a second or 2) (which it shouldn't yet) check you set everything up right. (To see your damage, just look at the combiner or multipurpose laser.) Now you have a choice: - Add more combiners until your damage drops. (This is like having more cannons on a ship) - Or, add destabilisers until the damage drops. (This is like having a bigger cannon instead of several smaller ones.) - Or, use a combination of the 2, if you want. - Add frequency doublers. These increase AP: Only use a few if your laser is for anti-air as planes (usually) aren't too heavily armoured. Add more doublers until you get the AP you want. Other parts: - Anti-munition nodes can connect to this laser too. Remember, they count as a combiner, so they can drop your damage. - Colourers are purely aesthetic. They connect to the combiner. - The adjusters (I forget the exact name) allow you to sacrifice some damage to let your lasers get through smoke and laser-absorb shields. These aren't necessary early in the game. - The other types of cavity are for lasers that will be used in short bursts. Single-inputs will increase your damage and cut the power cost, but you will lose damage over time. Storage cavities are more extreme versions of the single-input ones. You will have huge damage values if you use these, but it will drop rapidly. A final note: - If you're making a low-power laser, you don't need 4 pumps per cavity. A single combiner can be supported with only 2. Sorry if this was too hard to understand, I'm not exactly a qualified teacher :/
I'm going to buy the game soon, and would like to know the best strategy to making a massive fleet that wont just die from a single gatling round. Watched Season 1-Season 4 of From The Depths!
Thank you for making this tutorial series! I have the game and enjoy messing around in it, but struggle to get past the learning curve and there aren't many up to date tutorials out there. Could you give examples of how big weapons, engines, hulls, etc. should be for starting out?

I have played for 100 hours and i still like tutorials because there is so much stuff in from the depths that i don't know so please creep on doing the tutorials please
I'm surprised you say that's a small hull, that's a good sized ship to me. Anyhow, I'd like to see you do a tutorial on the PID System as well as the Detection Systems in the future.
Hey lath, you should make an advanced tutorial on large ships after you do the basics. I feel like I know how all of the systems work (for the most part) but I still can't bring it all together in 1 very large ship. It's almost like I don't know where to start. (And btw I know you're not a tutorial channel but it would be awesome if you took some time to spread thy knowledge to us mortals)
Not a question, but possibly an answer, the reason Lath removed the rudder in favor of the propellers is because props, jets and thrusters cause more stable turns
I can't wait to see more of these, since coming to your channel I have playing FTD, If anything I kinda want to know how you shaped your ship like that, every ship I try so far comes out looking like a rejected Star Destroyer along with other problems that seems to bring I prefer this video over the in game tutorials anyway
Nice! I got the game over a year ago but never got into it coz i didnt understand the game lol :) maybe after these vids i will finally have a proper go at it :)
Lath hopefully you can do the weapon tutorial soon. you made me buy this game and the only things i can build weapon wise is missles and torpedos.. need to learn the cram and adv cannons now.... and i only have 3 hours in this game
I am over 500 hours into this game and still love watching tutorials :3
XD
If we change that to over 1200 hours it applies to me too. ^^
Jan F if we change that to 6000 hours it will work for me too

I’m no expert, and you commented this years ago, but it sounds like the answer is ‘less keel’.

do you have detection systems?

thank you Lath :D

hi lath cool idea with a Tutorial series im sure alot could find this wery usefull
YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank God you are doing this series :)
Did we ever get more from this? Very helpful tutorial but I'd love more!
Yes, I bet a lot of us will need this.

Dude thank you so much! I could never figure out how to make a ship, this helps a lot.

Could you give examples of how big weapons, engines, hulls, etc. should be for starting out?
thank you sir for this very good introduction into ship building, did help me alot
Can you please continue this series, and go over subjects such as efficient weapons, efficient engines, defense, and the new detection system?
I just got the game last night, and I have no idea how anything works. I can’t wait to learn though.

(And btw I know you're not a tutorial channel but it would be awesome if you took some time to spread thy knowledge to us mortals)
I might need this after all.. I found out a few things I didn't know before.
Thanks for this video. just what I needed
Not a question, but possibly an answer, the reason Lath removed the rudder in favor of the propellers is because props, jets and thrusters cause more stable turns
at first, I was even scared to try and make a basic boat, but after the first two minutes, I found out how to do it
yuuus this is just what i needed, cant wait for more tuts
I can't wait to see more of these, since coming to your channel I have playing FTD, If anything I kinda want to know how you shaped your ship like that, every ship I try so far comes out looking like a rejected Star Destroyer along with other problems that seems to bring
I prefer this video over the in game tutorials anyway
Hey Lath, you should put the version number in the title so if this becomes obsolete in the future it doesn't screw with people
Thanks so much. Maybe in the future could you look into more tutorials please.
