Lapping around is such a bread and butter tactic, I didn't think about people not doing it. But now it is mentioned, blobs of missile troops standing behind clumps of frontline troops is really common in videos. It's how I always used warpfire throwers so never really got the complaints about it.

For me it was them being labelled ranged infantry and the presents if swift cavalry, so my brain didn't make the connection till near the end of wh1. But ranged does not necessarily mean standing behind the main line. As you would know a gunpowder flank is bloody lethal, and all it takes is dedicated troops to cover them (which are typically already there to guard the flanks anyway) and noticing that cavalry or monsters running around out there make tasty targets for a volley when you get the chance. The fast and low bullets hit cavalry easier than arrowfire anyway.

One of the formations I’ve been using often that helps you get flank shots without needing to leave the safety of your melee line is a series of chevrons with gunpowder just behind the melee supporting the adjacent chevrons. The crossfire also helps melt any unit that attempts to get through the gaps. Works with Cathay, Kislev, Dwarfs, Chorfs, etc. Basically anything with gunpowder and a strong defensive melee frontline. Empire is nice because the Ironsides are also decently capable in melee as a fallback

This tactic is essential with chaos dwarf blunderbusses. Unless you’re facing off against flying units or giant monster units, then you can place them behind your melee infantry and have them shoot upwards.
Blunderbusses are much more likely to inflict friendly fire than other missile units. Have them on the flanks and you can have cavalry/lords/heroes/monsters nearby and they can counter attack anything that goes after them. And if worst come to worst blunderbusses are decent at melee combat anyway.
With Fireglaives you can just place them behind your melee more often if you can give them the high ground.

I used that tactic already back in Shogun 2 with Matchlock Samurai. In Warhammer I altered it. I don't use firearms to flank right away but to soften up enemy flankers before they clash with my cavalry. For that I position them on the right and left of my main battle line and slightly tilt them inwards to give them better firing arches against enemy cav etc. As soon as the enemy flankers are gone I swing the shooters into flanking positions like shown here by Mr. Zerkovich. It is very satisfying to see hails of bullets smashing into the opponents "ass".
You could also keep one shooter in reserve to deal with flyers. Just keep them at the back center of your formation. They will automatically engage flyers because they don't have any other clear targets.

You can also set up your front line to have a gap between each unit that the guns can shoot through

    • @derkylos
      @derkylos 7 місяців тому +6

If you have a gap every 2 infantry units, you can use the infantry to charge sideways into any enemy units that try to pass through the gap to engage your missile units, with the added bonus that the enemy units will then turn to fight your infantry, exposing their flanks to your missile units. Basically, instead of the fight being one long line with your guys on one side and the enemy on the other, you try to rotate each engagement 90 degrees. If you're really lucky, you might even be able to have one of your infantry rear charge the unit that's going after your missiles, although then you probably shouldn't fire into the resulting melee, as the chance of friendly fire goes way up.

This particular maneuver, while it has its merits, is particularly difficult to pull off. Instead, I'd recommend pulling your frontline infantry back and positioning it at an angle, so the enemy infantry will pull forward and at an angle to engage, exposing their flank to your missiles. Also advisable to do this with archer infantry. You could also reconfigure your infantry shape mid-fight to reform into a narrower square to open up some line of sight for your missiles or artillery.

You can also do a solid front line that pulls away from the enemy exposing holes in your front line. The enemy will rarely break off with your melee troops to push past if you have those troops move apart while staying engaged with their front line. It's a great way to give your Gunner shots without having to step out of the defensive pocket.

I like setting up my infantry into an open W formation with gaps at the bottom. Park my missile units at the bottom behind everything and when units charge my infantry and get stuck in, i can still get solid angles of fire on them without risking friendly fire and without the risk of having my missiles being sandwiched between enemy blocks. L formations are also useful, same principle as the video but without swinging vulnerable units out super wide.
I only play singleplayer though, so i highly doubt they'd be as effective in multiplayer

  • @TT-vd7rv

You can also use missle corridors where you do narrow front line stack leaving quite a nice gap for enemy units to wrap around the heads of the front line rows which then let's the rifle missile lines shoot down the corridors without being obstructed. Only single entities may get through those gaps though so use your own to engage. Missile corridors looking like []_[]_[]_[] with the melee being in the columns and flat missle line being at the end gaps. Keep the columns close enough to catch advancing enemy stacks

They move on the flank and engage and if anything goes to charge them the miners toss their charges over them and then charge through to intercept... Good times... As far as Irondrakes. I just put them in my front line... I shrink their unit down to have a very small facing, and squeeze them in between Longbeards They just burn burn burn. if the enemy tries to get to them i use the longbeards to protect... if the enemy doesn't... I have the option of doing the phallus of doom maneuver with the drakes to get a sweet flank...

For gun units it's better to turn your frontline into pylons instead of walls. So basically very narrow formations that are like 40 ranks deep. If you have 2 gun units and 2 melee units form them something like this:
    \ _ _ /
\ and / are the melee units, _ are gun units. REALLY good if you have power units that pack a punch. If you have a flamer or volley gun, put it right in between of your two gun units, then focus on anything that is coming close. A hero in the middle at the far end of the shotgunner range can also really help prevent units and blob up attacking units to be cleared out by the gunpowder in no time.

Honestly though, dwarf ranged best ranged, only missiles that can basically ignore positioning and gun down orks with grudge fuelled vigor

Just use the Chad Checkerboard instead. Way less hassle, better result, formation looks cooler.

I've never understood how people can use this tactic.
For me, 99% of the time, there are more enemy units than I have so I can't flank anything as I'm the one being flanked.
The other 1% of the time, I don't need to use this tactic because I'm fighting a 1 to 10 battle where I can just select and drag my blob of units to the smaller enemy.

Wish CA watched these videos and implemented AI doing these strategies. Handguners flank can be easily countered, some stealthy gits or calvary would wreck em.

... or you can just checkboard because the AI is shite at pushing through gaps.
