  • When we first saw this R32 GT-R sitting quietly in the corner of Motor Sports Mechanical workshop we thought it was just another tough street R32 the likes of which we see every day. Boy were we wrong...
    With 1100hp on tap and 8-sec quarters, this fire-breathing monster is not just powerful and fast, it's also full of clever engineering solutions that make this car rather special.

    The exhaust cutout being controlled by the ecu is genius, just solved a lot of issues I've been trying to overcome building a steerable drift car with how strict my local laws are on noise etc.. I really didn't want to have to remember to flip switches or pull block off plates and that's perfect.

    Incredibly well built. Loving this show Scotty. Excellent to hear the pros talk and informative. Im a massive r31/rb30 fan good to see they went the billet block route from what I've read rb30 bottom ends can have harmonic balance issue at higher rpm. This thing literally has everything you can do to a r32 its unreal.

Thing I'm confused about is the headlight, been seeing a few with this mod lately, wouldn't this make it difficult to drive at night and absolute cop bait or is it usually just swapped back in for street use?? Can't believe the billet block grows soo much with temperature change 😮

    • @John.strong
      @John.strong 6 років тому +3

      Christopher Salmon it won't grow 10cm if thats what your wondering
      Probably not even 1mm
      I can't be bothered doing the math atm but all materials have a standard rate they grow / srink when heated / cooled
      A standard rule of thumb for steel is something like 0.001 (of an inch )for every 100 degrees Fahrenheit (from memory ) and aluminum is not so drastically different that then engine will grow 10cm when warm
      But even a 0.5mm grow will tighten the timing belt a lot

    • @brandonb8543
      @brandonb8543 6 років тому +2

      John Strong is this a joke or are you seriously talking about something you clearly know jack about? aluminum expands ALMOST 2 times the amount of steel. Saying it's not drastically different between the 2 is a grossly idiotic statement. It doesn't take a thermodynamic genius to see how big of a difference the coefficient of linear expansion is between the 2 is. You really should make the time to be bothered to use Google before you post about stuff and sound like an idiot. Without knowing the linear foot of the metal(the size) you can't do any calculations to say oh that's not true. Don't come out and say that's bullshit and then say but I can't be bothered with the equation to prove it wrong. Cause if you could actually do the math you would. You just sound like some dumb ass with a keyboard spreading facts that are completely not true and coming up with false rules of thumb and spreading bullshit to ppl. It's alright not to know but don't act like you do and don't try teaching ppl wrong information on subjects you clearly are not qualified to answer or even talk about.

      @WBush-uc9pe 6 років тому +7

      Gentlemen! This ain't thermogoddamits class, it's just UA-cam. There's nothing scienticious going on here.
      When y'all get so hot under yer collar, I fear for the thread holding that top shirt button closed so tightly around your neck.
      No, I will not speculate on the coefficient of expansion of an angry human's neck, nor the average tensile strength of thread used to attach buttons. ;-)

    • @John.strong
      @John.strong 6 років тому +1

      Brandon B im not pretending to to know much
      But i can guarantee the block if it was 50 to 60cm tall it will not grow 10cm
      That will change the compression ratio so drastically it can go from 14:1 requiring race gas to 7:1 real fast
      Having worked on billet blocks and knowing they use irom sleeves most of the time
      If the block grew 10cm from cold to warm and the sleeves grew 1mm there would be massive problems with every iron sleeved billet block
      Not to mention stock aluminum block with iron sleeves would have massive problems as well

    • @WBush-uc9pe
      @WBush-uc9pe 6 років тому +3

      My fellow thermodynamicists, watch starting at 4:18 . The difference in block dimensions is due to RB30 block being taller than RB26, not thermal expansion.
      Only you can rescue yourself from the ID-10-T loop you dove into.

    Can you clarify about the mechanical fuel pump? It sounded like they were going to put it in the back, but I thought mechanical fuel pumps were belt driven.

    • @andersjjensen
      @andersjjensen 6 років тому

      They can also be cable driven. Kind of like a hand break cable of a bicycle, where the steel wire spins inside the jacket. But yes, its driven off the belt.

    Question for all the clever folks. Ive been wondering about this. He just touched on rail pressere and delta P across the injector and the FPR lifting the pressure along with boost. When the air in moving through the runner with the valves open and injection on that runner is taking place.... doesnt the bernouli say that high velocity air wil be at a reduced pressure in that runner while injection and actually increases the Delta P over that injector?

    so the rb30 has a taller block for a longer stroke ? for off road reliability? honestly i didn't even know it went bigger than 2.6 stock

    • @linchester8464
      @linchester8464 6 років тому +9

      gopherchucks the RB30 block came from the Holden VL commondere. The RB30 is a single cam unit and ppl will change the heads to the RB25 or RB26 head to get the RB30DET hybrid.
      It also common to hear RB32 meaning the engine has 3.2L displacement. Even 3.4L is possible with bore and stroked.

    • @rickphillips7221
      @rickphillips7221 6 років тому +4

      rb30 is the same bore diameter as the rb25 and rb26 it's just a longer block so a longer stroke. Go look at some vl turbos you'll get a pretty good idea about the rb30's.

    • @nathan2483
      @nathan2483 6 років тому +2

      The rb30 was available on 3 platforms. Vl commodore, adm r31 Skyline and gq Patrol. The patrol was carb, and connected to a z32 300zx manual box with a transfer case. As already stated, the rb30 block is a tall deck rb25/26 block. But the rb26 n1 is still the strongest factory block.

    • @linchester8464
      @linchester8464 6 років тому

      Nathan Porter you missed out one more block. The Most rare of all. The RRR block which is used for the GT500 cars and also in the Z Tune R34. No ones knows how many were made but one block alone will cost 5000 to 6000 for a used block and 10 grand for the new block.

    • @nathan2483
      @nathan2483 6 років тому

      Lin Chester fair call, actually 2. The r series also has the rd28, the turbo diesel 2.8L which was the poor man spec diesel in the gq and early gu series. It got basically the same driveline setup as the rb30

  • @johnwilson1794
    @johnwilson1794 6 років тому

    Yes the belt tightening would be noticeable as the motor warms up but the block doesn't grow 10mm that's BS. A Ford 6 cylinder head grows about 3mm in length from cold to operating temperature and that's a longer piece of alloy than this block is high. That's the reason early cast iron block falcon 6s blew head gaskets all the time.
    I'm tipping it would grow about 2mm. Moving both cam gears 2mm away from the crank pulley would make a huge difference in belt tension.

      Bob Last he’s the owner of the shop, not the car. It’s a customer car. The msm r33 (his car) is really big time

      Well spotted! The car actually has full roof lining now, but it didn't have it at the time of the shoot.

    Interesting but like every other car video I’ve ever seen you don’t get to see the car just the guys talking about it. They might as well have been sitting at the bar in the pub.

      We're pretty sure given the choice they would have been:)

      I somewhat agree. Some close ups in the boot wouldn't have gone astray as they were discussing batteries, power steering pumps etc that were all out of view.
      But overall, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing these two nerd out :P

      Gotta have some secrets guys. Gtr drag racing here in Australia is big time. You can’t just give everything up.

    • @anomamos9095

      Nathan Porter . That might be true but a lot of the stuff they were talking about is straight out of the catalog and no secret except to those who might buy some of it if they actually got to see it. Buying stuff out of a catalog or off the net is risky, you buy something from the picture and description like a pair of shoes and instead of a nice comfy pair of pumps you get clown shoes for an elephant! When it comes to performance parts it can be even more dangerous as the part you get may look the beans and fit but be totally wrong.
      Seeing stuff actually fitted to a working vehicle is worth a lot in advertising and the only excuse for not showing something is either to keep it secret or not giveaway free advertising.

      Lol, you can’t just build a 1000hp gtr from a catalog. 90% of the work is fab and tuning.
