  • In this video valve lash is set in a 1984 Honda Big Red. This method will work for many other Honda and others ATV s and ATC s though you will need to find your own valve lash specs for that.

My old high school shop teacher still teaching me a thing or two. Picked up a 1984 Honda atc200es in almont mint shape low compression, intake valve was too tight
Runs beautifully now. going to use it for deer season.
Thank you for the video Mr. Mac

Thanks for the info. Your video walked me through the initial set up procedure and I adjusted the valves by feel. .002 is half rhe thickness of a sheet of printer paper so I just brought the adjuster all the way down and backed it off an eighth of a turn.

What a great video!! Would you happen to know a cross reference for the rubber gasket that’s supposed to seal the valve cap? I thought about a little RTV on the cap side and slip the gasket back on top of it but I’m sure that won’t hold up.

Nobody caught him say the gas valve is vertical when the gas valve was actually horizontal when turned to the off position....good video none the less...not making fun ,just pointing out a mistake

Looking for some help on what motor i got , i picked up an old honda engine sitting in my friends garage , it had all the electrical attached and carb is still good and attached as well so want to get it going for a go kart but dont know the year or model it came from . It looks the same as your motor but it has a hi low option and that seems to be locked up but motor spins free and i want to rebuild it but need to know what it is so i can order new parts to get it up and going ...anyone who can help me i would greatly appreciate it thanks

I just found your question. If it looks like this and has high/ low but no reverse and is chain drive, it's probably an 82 or 83 big red engine.

Does the Valve cover have a gasket or do I use hondabond? My valve cover is leaking oil down onto my exhaust a little, and do I have to remove or drop the engine to change it?

You need a new valve cover they are 20 on ebay. There's a seal that is stuck on the cover that goes bad sometimes

What advantage does the 200x valve train have on it?

    • @macsgarage

The 200x cam has more lift and duration than the stock big red cam, though they quit making the big red cam at some point and started selling the 200x version as a replacement. It gives up a little bottom end but makes more up top. The 200x also had higher compression ratio, a bigger carb, and different likely higher flow muffler. All that added together made around 20% more hp in the 200x configuration. I have the cam, piston, and performance muffler. Still looking for a factory 200x carb as I don't want the china junk sold now.

@@macsgarage if I was to get the valve train from the 200x what's required just the internals under the cover or do I nee the cove or head aswell?

I recently bought a 1984 200ES Big Red that isn't running right. I gave it a carb clean but it didn't seem to make any difference. I'm no expert on this kind of thing at all, I was wondering if you could have a listen to how my machine is running and give me any advice on what to try? I posted a clip of my machine idling here. ua-cam.com/video/pBD3aAJlctw/v-deo.html Thanks for any help!
