    The three and five-door Golf hatchback is by far and away the most popular variant of Volkswagen’s evergreen family car. While the entry-level S model is aggressively priced while still well equipped compared to rivals, the more expensive GT packs enough luxury kit and technology to justify its higher cost. The petrol and diesel engine ranges are both impressive.

    So the hard plastics are described as ' not ideal' whereas in any other car it would be considered cheap.

    The screen is easier to use?! I beg to differ. Glossy screen... good luck reading it half the time. No buttons to push means you're navigating through the menu a lot more. What takes me 1 button press that I can do without even looking (thanks to the thick lip underneath the screen as an orientation point) is going to take a lot more steps, as those gestures are rather rudimentary and don't work all that well anyway. With this screen I will _always_ have to look at the screen if I want to do anything. And after every press, I need to look and search for the right element again. Speaking of hitting things... when going over rough roads, the finger is going to be all over the place. Good luck selecting the right thing then! With the old HU, the thick lip let you rest your hand and gave you stability, thus making it MUCH easier to select what you want.
    Oh yes, I hear you... but it does have buttons and dials! Well, the entry level head unit does, the Discover Pro cuts them in half. And even then, they are just capacitive buttons. You can't feel them, and you can't touch them before pushing them. So no "let me search for the right button with my fingertips without looking away from the road". It's look, concentrate and try really hard to find the right moment to make contact, before a bump will send the finger all over the place and you go somewhere you really didn't want to go.
    The only advantage of the new screen is that it looks more modern/cooler, though I don't think it integrates that well.
    I'm using the buttons and dials on my Discover Pro all the time. ALL THE TIME. Now they've taken those away. For me this is a reason not to buy the 7.5. Terrible decision, I'd rather go to a different brand because of it.

      As for never ever going to break... my previous car was a Citroen Xsara. That started rattling at the age of, say, 12. Hard plastics everywhere, but it was fine. The Golf? It's 3. VW is already trying to fill up the doors etc. with more dampening material in the hopes of getting it to shut up again. Also, why is the stuff near the windscreen soft (never ever going to touch!), but the area next to the knees? Hard plastic, even with a molded sharp corner. Guess what I'm more likely to touch.
      It is a wonderful car, with lots of smart design choices, it looks great, has a nice interior that's a great place to be in, and the driver assistance systems are wonderful. But perfect it is not.
      Wait a minute. Wasn't the 1.4 discontinued? Both the 120ish and 150ish hp petrol engines should be 1.5 now.
      The steering even in sport mode needs to be more accurate and direct. That's what the sport mode is there for! A stock Seat Leon, not even the hotter FR or Cupra versions with stiffened up suspension, will feel much more lively, much more direct and fun. I get that the regular or eco mode should be a bit disconnected, but if you spend extra for the chance to select different drive modes, shouldn't sport do something more than make the wheel heavier? Mind you the stock Leon isn't much stiffer than the stock Golf.
      Also, the 1.6 liter diesel is horrible. At highway speeds it is noisy as hell, it is lethargic, has no power at all below, say, 1600 rpm or so, as in, you may have to downshift to ever get out of that hole, and to get moving you need to get moving, at which point it's sayonara to fuel economy. The 2.0 diesel is the one to chose. Refined, powerful, frugal even at higher speeds. And if driving slow is what you want to do, the 1.4/1.5 petrol engines will do the job just fine. At lower speeds with a gentle foot they can be pretty frugal as well, and they are more affordable to buy. They are also very refined and quiet, and if you need power, it's there. Even at 1200 rpm the 1.4 IMHO pulls better than the 1.6 at 1600.
      I also wouldn't say it is really comfortable. My old Citroen Xsara was significantly more comfortable. I'm on 16". Granted, at 180, 200 km/h the Golf does very well. It's more planted (not that the Citroen was bad, but the Golf does inspire more confidence), and the right gets really good at those speeds. But even in Germany most people usually don't go that fast. And at lower speeds, it can be quite rough. Not painfully rough, but not comfortable either.

    Err, a bit early to say that. Like its Audi cousin, VW has consistently languished in the 'fair to poor' area of every reputable reliability index for several decades, trounced by virtually every Japanese (and latterly South Korean) model.
    And yes, it is boring as well.

    u guys said the Golf in Europe are overpriced??? go take a look to Indonesia with the Kingdom of TOYOTA. even a €3000 TOYOTA SUV (Toyota Fortuner VRZ) still doesn't have even a VSC and rear disc brake. and it only have 3 airbags with a tincan metal plate. Still think VW is overpriced??? The Golf here is a premium hatchback and VW is a premium brand (yeah it sounds weird when you know 'people's car' is a premium brand). And do you guys know what engine does TOYOTA give to us??? 2400cc Diesel with 350Nm torque and 150HP power (i'm preety sure it will get at least 300HP if it's made by VW). And we also have so many problems with the conventional 6 speed automatic gearbox (yea they can't even made a conventional 6 speed A/T). Now, do u guys still think VW is overpriced???

    1:19 "like it's never going to break" - panel moves when he pushes it with hand. Boring, overpriced and overrated car. Classical VW style - box on wheels with no characted, no design and no soul at all.

      This exactly! My sister has a Golf MK5 and her center brake light just broke off one day. It just literally fell of and hanged on the wires. The dealer couldn't fix it without replacing the entire boot spoiler.
      Her fuel management system also went bonkers and VW had to get an electrical engineer from the factory to come look at the car.
      I'm sorry but I'm not impressed by these VWs at all. I own two Opels (admittedly not the best cars in the world) and they haven't given me any major issues like the VW. There are just as much hard plastics in the VW as there are in my Opels. The MK5 golf also has a lot of soft touch coatings which are now really gross and sticky. It might have looked good at the showroom but not years later. These cars don't age well at all.
      I think VW must be paying journalists to hype up the cars because a lot of the VW competitors have similar build quality. On Autogefuhl the one journalist owned a Polo and she mentioned that the seat handle broke off from normal use. Way to go VW. First Dieselgate and now you are bribing journalists.

      Yeah. VW Group is huge and very powerful. It would be no wonder that they put a lot of money and effort into building up the hype. Also, I think Japanese cars from the same price range can easily put to shame every VW.

      I own an Mk5 as well. Bear in mind those cars are now 10yrs old so repairs are going to be needed, that is normal for any brand especially if the car is high mileage or in harsh climates and not garaged. If the Golf was shite it would not be the top seller it is..

    • @TheChannel1978
      @TheChannel1978 7 років тому +7

      Japanese cars beat ANY brand in terms of reliability so that's hardly something to criticise about a Golf. Also VW spends far less on marketing than Premium car brands, I think you are not seeing things in perspective here. Anyhow, I've owned cars from all types of brands some cheaper and some more premium than VW and VW is somewhere in the middle and that is why they sell a lot of cars. Good performance/features/price compromise but cabin insulation streets ahead of a Japanese car as they are built for German motorway speeds as well

      all VW does after the update is change the air filter, which is a waste. Can get an aftermarket filter and get it fitted that will increase power, not decrease

      My biggest issue with them is not the diesel fiasco, but their lack of longevity, e.g. gearboxes that only last 70,000 miles or so. The same applies to Audi seeing as they use the same parts.

      @W00fer 7 років тому +1
