It always amazes me how little he knows about the lore, while making lore videos and getting hundreds of thousands of views. I really should've taken the dive in 2012, when I was the king of Skyrim. The real worst decision: Step 1: Talk to Thadgier in Falkreath Step 2: Get the quest to deliver his best friends ashes to a priest Step 3: Eat the ashes
He said he's not at full power because barbas has half his power which doesn't make sense, Does that mean that the dragonborn is half as strong as him?

The voice acting on Clavicus vile is so good. Him and Cicero are really unique voices. I swear most male npcs are either vilkas or tolfdir, and sometimes the courier.
The Emperor (Wes Johnson) was also a standout imo. Granted Johnson also voiced Sheogorath (gloriously), so it shouldn't be a surprise that the Emperor Titus Meade II was good too. Stephen Russell, who did Vile (and Barbas and a hundred others) is great. Knowing he did both Vile and Barbas makes the conversations between them even more amusing as he is really just talking to himself. btw, A lot of the voices are literally just generic voices with names like NordMaleDrunk. Some of them are decent enough, but are overused.

@@ZyliceLiddell in midievil times killing a chicken was considered wasteful bc of the potential for eggs. Killing someones chicken was killing livestock Peasants actually generally ate salmon pretty regularly caught in streams. Nobles ate chicken bc they could afford new livestock. But killing anothers livestock was a serious crime in those times. Heck in the west cattle theft (or any livestock theft) were capital crimes. Texas still carries capital punishment for stealing livestock even. So really its just an accurate representation of midievil times This can actually be traced back through ancient times as well looking at ancient jews, punishments
Fun little glitch i ran into with this quest; I did the quest in its entirety, got the mask, and for some reason Barbos stayed with me, even after going back to Clavicus. I wasn't able to talk to him anymore, but he was still an invincible dog. Tho his endless barking, and constant blocking of doors, got me to slowly see Clavicus point of view....

Cody James Thank you! That quest is so messed up, it makes me feel sick thinking about it. Personally I waited until he was on the alter, then killed all the cannibals, piled their stripped corpses on the shrine, and defiled it by placing an amulet of Arkay on it.
The priesthood of Arkay are some of the worst misers in Skyrim. Iirc he pays you a pittance for doing his job for him and saving his business in markarth. Andurs does the same in whiterun because he's apparently too weak to deal with a few skeletons on his own, which wouldn't even be rising in the first place if they had been properly consecrated to Arkay, which in turn tells us that Andurs is either indolent or fraudulent. The priestess of Arkay in Riften asks you to take a dagger to Whiterun for her and iirc doesn't pay you anything for it. The only decent ones of the whole lot are Runil of Falkreath and Styrr of Solitude, and Runil's only been a priest of Arkay for the last 30 years of his centuries-long lifespan, and Styrr doesn't need to pay you because he knows the court will.

@Le kitty Le caty Didn’t happen to me. I watched some Skyrim videos here and there, decided to try the game out, and knew not to kill that chicken because of some of the videos I watched. Obivously killing a peasants farm animal would make them mad but Chickens where extremely important livestock in the middle ages, it wasn't to 1900s and really the 1950s it became a poorer person meat. You'd maybe kill some of your roosters in a year, cause Chickens where 2nd only to cows in livestock.....status.
Funnily enough trusting an offer made by Clavicus Vile and later coming to regret it is actually a running theme with him in lore. He’s the Elder Scrolls equivalent of a Jinn, interpreting your wishes in a literal but negative manner
not to mention that people who made the poor choice of killing barbas lose one of the most hilarious scenes of the game, which is clavicus vile really pissed off with the dragonborn, grumbling to himself

me just like oblivion i called my class a daedric bane cause daedric armor plus war hammer and maces and tanky build cause anyone not even the princes could contain me!
I shamelessly make a stealth archer 99 percent of the time. You cannot beat the amount of damage you deal even with just a little bit of an upgraded archery tree, let alone maxing it out. Plus you can pick off dragons, draugr, bandits, and everything else from so far off, you barely ever have to actually interact with enemies lol.
What annoys me is not barbus constant barking but him either getting in the way or him literally pushing you as your trying to do something like using an alchemy table or opening a chest
or try to talk to a shop keeper then accidently steal something instead because he pushed you at that exact moment. His hit box and lack of personal space is frustratingly bad, Mask be damned, he's getting an axe to the face from me every time.
Mhm. I do think there are many other things they could have given us a lesson for. The torture of a dude in the name of Molag Bal and everything related to Maven Blackbriar, just to name the most obvious ones in my eyes.
I think that TheEpicNate explains it better in one of his videos. Choosing the ax is less of a punishment of morality and more of a reference to this particular Daedric Prince's title. He is after all the prince of Power, Wishes, Serenity, Bargains and (the most relevant to this quest) trickery. That being said, his character is supposed to twist wishes into something the character never actually wanted.
@@necrobynerton7384 it happens to the best of us. Never got so confused in my life, questioning every bit of my existence. Ever since then I checked my corners and have the burdon of being over encumbered and not having one secret in the game.
The Rueful Axe never was a Daedric Artifact , the Mask of Clavicus Vile actually belongs to the Daedric Lord Vile rather than being simply forged by him to trick some poor wizard into killing his own daughter. In the Opinion of one nerd...
I was going to as the axe looked good and daedric artifacts are usually pretty powerful (I still thought it counted as a daedric artifact) but just to make sure I checked it's stats and since I already had a better weapon than it I decided to spare the dog
Fun fact, the Masque of Clavicus has an equal protection level to the Daedric helmet, making it arguably the best piece of heavy armor in the game and incredibly OP so early in the game!
As Peter mentions enchantments suck. And you won’t get the 25% complete set bonus. Once you tap out at 90-100 smithing and 100 enchantment (x2 perk) you can make the best armors in the game. Nothing even comes close.
I think the most interesting part of this quest is that Clavicus and Barbas are voiced by the same person. There's a not-so-subtle hint there. As for moral decisions, to me SUCCEEDING at Namira's quest is MUCH worse than failing this one. Eww.
Gotta agree. So many people freaking out about you choosing to kill Barbas, -but apparently being a cannibal is okay... Oh, and let's not forget the shocker about discovering that a good many of the prominent NPCs in Markarth are cannibals if you allow the quest to progress. I have to admit, Skyrim threw quite a few moral dilemmas our way.
@@Vulpine407 I once played a morally good paladin and did the quest for her so I could kill everyone in the cult at once, imagine my surprise when it seemed like I had to kill half of Markarth.

Well, Italian New Yorker made man type accent, and the only one I've noticed in game outside the usual Netherlander/British accents we usually encounter.
I wish more of their quests in Skyrim had this type of win/fail situation. Complete it with the incorrect moral choice for the quest giver, get a reward that isn't as good and fail something else. Not to say all the choices should be morally good. Barbas was your quest giver here (he started it, he promised the reward) so the moral choice is the good one. Mehrunes Degon (sp?) would mean a morally bad choice, etc, etc. Would have been far more fun if all or most of the quests were like this. You'd end up with a "grey" moral character if you'd wanted to get everything good in the game.
There is also a morally “good” decision you can make in a daedric quest that gives a worse reward and prevents the player from getting an achievement. It’s the nightmare quest around dawnstar.
@SESolutionsEngineering The "reward" for killing the cannibals is just a regular Arkay amulet. You can't even get the dude you saved as a follower. Erandur, on the other hand, is one of the few followers with location-specific dialogue and is also a very good mage (he lacks Magicka, but that can be fixed). And the Skull thoroughly sucks. Definitely not worth killing him.
@@Underworlder5 Yeah you guessed it. You can't "fix" low magicka on followers. Erandur is just a pretty weak follower for combat (compared to some of the other mages at least. Jzargo, Marcurio, Illia and Serana come to mind). In addition to that he doesn't summon atronachs or raises corpses. Conjurers are generally the most useful mage companions especially early on because their summons take aggro away from you With the right enchantments and smithed weapons you can make any follower decent and viable. The thing about the location specific dialogue is true though. He is one of the more "fleshed out" followers. One of the few who actually have a backstory and a lot of voicelines.
@@Underworlder5 Yes. With enchantments. Fortify Magicka and Fortify Magicka Regeneration work on followers (Fortify Illusion/Destruction/Resto/Conj/Alt won't work, instead). So you can make his Magicka pool huge and also boost his Regeneration rate to the point that he won't be able to cast spells fast enough for his Magicka pool to drain significantly.
I've never been interested in the axe, so it never even occurred to me that I would be locked out of the achievement if I kept it. I just always preferred the masque.

When told to kill Barbas, I actually screeched. I just LOVED that talking dog as soon as he said his first lines. Why would I even consider killing the dog?! I actually wanted to keep the talking dog.
@@Cynsham Oh yeah it was so much fun having him constantly blocking your path, and arrow shots, and bumping into you, with the added bonus of barking at you every few seconds. Good times!
@@bdsman64 you're the only sane person in this thread. that dog made me have to reload from quicksaves uncounted times before i figured out where i was going to get rid of him.
I wanted to as well and I initially misremembered the quest thinking that if you decided not to kill him that he could be kept but I forgot that he gets added to the statue after.
Exactly, he killed untold thousands of people and from the point of view of the Blades, there's no way to trust him. How could they know if he's truly reformed? Sure, he helped save the world, but that is not necessarily altruistic and he could easily have been doing it for selfish reasons, like getting rid of a rival who stood in his way of dominance.

Clavi is the Thanos of the series. Half his power = Half of Skyrim would die. Full Power = "EVERYBODY in skyrim would die!" The helmet is great for shopping-- The armor rating is nothing to laugh at, the weight is fine, the magic restore is acceptable given everything else.
The first time I finished this quest I got the mask but ended up feeling like I was cheated by both of them. I felt like Clavicus Vile was speaking through Barbas and in the end I helped him get his full power AND axe back... But now I see that the alternative was even worse lol
I feel like the rueful axe not counting into the daedric artifacts achievement is actually a feature that is perfectly explained by the grammar Barbas uses when telling its story to the player. He says "Clavicus gave him an axe". AN axe. Not a unique one, because the definite article would be more fitting in that case, just some kind of axe that he even could have found near that man's location. So quite possibly it was just some random axe from nearby and not a unique daedra-made axe Yep, English teacher here, I guess (English as a second language).
@@MichaelR1275 not really. In that context the axe is technically the new information. New information is usually accompanied with the indefinite article :) Although again, we technically know that the axe is a part of the story and he could use "the" to mean "that specific axe".
@@MichaelR1275 if the indefinite article (a/an) is the correct option, then yes. In short: If you are choosing between "a" and "an", go with the first sound of the word. If it starts with a vowel, use an. If you are choosing between "the" and "a/an" think if both you and the person you are talking to, know what exactly you are talking about. If yes, use "the". If no, use "a/an"
Well yea. It’s not anything of “his” per say. Even tho he says you brought back “My axe”. I may be mistaken but doesn’t each daedric artifact have their names in the Weapon description ? Edit: as soon as I finished I remember Dawnbreaker 😂😂😂
When you’re making a Skyrim video and Skyrim reminds you that you’re playing Skyrim... *Arrow hits invisible wall* *Enemies nearby preventing fast travel* Even so, nice video.
Kinda opposite with the mehrunes razor artifact for the Dawnstar museum quest. You have to kill the guy in order to get the artifact. If you spare his life and make the moral decision you do not get the mehrunes razor. Gotta love Skyrim
What would have been nice for a 3rd hidden option would be returning to Clavicus after collecting the axe, and, if you attempt to leave without completing the quest (leaving him at half power), he stops you and you can bribe your way into an even better deal.
Ainz oal gown Over lord I see this valid excuse a lot. While I agree for a lot of the mispronunciations and things he does while live streaming, this is a recorded piece and he has plenty of time to practice and figure it all out. I know this comment is going to make me seem like a dick, but that’s just the truth of the matter. 6:58 - 7:10 if he has the power to snap his fingers, and kill everyone in Skyrim. But half of his power is in Barbas. Does that mean he can now snap his fingers and then kill half of all people. *Thanos increased to 50*
Well, I prefer to just reunite Barbas with his master, ask for nothing more and it ends well for everyone. Besides, you can postpone the last leg and just wander around with Barbas. He can bite hard and is marked as an immortal NPC making him one of the best companions you can have
I've never even been tempted to keep the axe. Maybe if I was playing a 2 Handed Axe wielding Dragonborn, but even then, it has a lousy enchantment and even an Ebony axe would be more powerful. Let alone a Daedric or Dragon Bone one, with a Chaos enchantment. The Masque at least has a unique enchantment that is useful, until your Speech skill gets really high.
I thought the Vile questline was decent, but I expected this video to cover the decision whether or not to kill Paarthurnax. So on the one hand, we have this dragon who's been around for centuries upon centuries, spending that time ruminating on the Elder Scrolls, acting as a mentor for the Greybeards, greatly ruing his actions in the Dragon War that one time, and who gave you advice, key information, shout abilities, and wisdom in order to end the threat to Skyrim who also happens to be his brother. (And I count that as a point in his favor, in case it wasn't clear. A stranger dragon would be bad enough, but sending the Dragonborn to kill your brother probably took a lot more). On the other hand, we have two humans who are clinging to the centuries-old tradition of "we want to kill all the dragons." On the grounds that this dragon committed crimes a few thousand years ago. Seriously?? My decision: install the mod that lets me move forward with the Blades questline without killing the best old mentor figure in the game.
Im sadly limited to PS4 and don't know if that's a mod I can get, I can't bring myself to kill parthunax even if he poses a long term threat, Im just biased and dislike delphine, I'm only mortal
I never understood that quests vanilla state. Like you're sworn to follow the Dragonborn, I'm the Dragonborn, I say he lives, end of discussion lol. Makes no sense that you can't order them to leave Parthurnax be.
Realistically, it wouldn't matter how long ago it was, or what he's done since. You can't just erase crimes you've committed in the past because you feel bad about them, and have done other nice things since then. That's just not how life works. If Paarthurnax was a real person people would be clamoring to give him a life sentence in prison at the very least. The dragonborn carrying out vigilante justice would be considered a misunderstood hero, even if the law wouldn't take his side either. War criminals don't deserve forgiveness.
@@Otakupatriot117 While what you're saying is technically true, I see a difference between law and justice. By law he has to answer for the crime he committed many thousands of years ago, yes. But in terms of justice, he has reformed as a person, he did so during the time of the crime (when he betrayed Alduin), and he has helped the Dragonborn grow stronger to defeat Alduin themself. There could be an argument made for "redemption in death," where he could only "truly" be redeemed by going off to stop Alduin himself and likely dying in the process, but I don't buy that being executed by the Dragonborn is justice. If you want to put it in non-dragon terms, consider someone who helped commit murders as a teenager, had a change of heart and tried to stop their confederates, retire as a Buddhist monk for the next ninety years and explain to another how to defeat the other hundred-year-old unrepentant killer, who has started killing again. I might argue that some justice wouldn't be out of place, but he doesn't deserve to be summarily executed.

Hey kid! I got some dragon souls in the back of my van. Come on... Get in my van....

Killing someones chicken was killing livestock
Peasants actually generally ate salmon pretty regularly caught in streams. Nobles ate chicken bc they could afford new livestock.
But killing anothers livestock was a serious crime in those times.
Heck in the west cattle theft (or any livestock theft) were capital crimes. Texas still carries capital punishment for stealing livestock even.
So really its just an accurate representation of midievil times

The "reward" for killing the cannibals is just a regular Arkay amulet.
You can't even get the dude you saved as a follower.

And the Skull thoroughly sucks. Definitely not worth killing him.
@@SDayle now i got curious. how do you fix low magicka? enchantments?
@@Underworlder5 Yeah you guessed it.
You can't "fix" low magicka on followers. Erandur is just a pretty weak follower for combat (compared to some of the other mages at least. Jzargo, Marcurio, Illia and Serana come to mind).
In addition to that he doesn't summon atronachs or raises corpses. Conjurers are generally the most useful mage companions especially early on because their summons take aggro away from you
With the right enchantments and smithed weapons you can make any follower decent and viable.
The thing about the location specific dialogue is true though. He is one of the more "fleshed out" followers. One of the few who actually have a backstory and a lot of voicelines.

So you can make his Magicka pool huge and also boost his Regeneration rate to the point that he won't be able to cast spells fast enough for his Magicka pool to drain significantly.
Siding with Clavicus Vile never ends well lore wise, everyone who makes a deal with him always end up regretting it in the end
I've never been interested in the axe, so it never even occurred to me that I would be locked out of the achievement if I kept it. I just always preferred the masque.
"So give him... an arrow to the knee"
Proceeds to shoot him in the back
Looked like the kidney area. ha ha ha
Boomx headshot straight in your knee.
On my first ever play though of Skyrim I escaped Helgen with Hadvar because I didn't see Ralof... *I feel like such an idiot every time I think of it.*
Why would you be ashamed of making the right choice?
I did the opposite, i was really worried about what consequence my choice held. We stood there for 20 minutes.
SO I WASN'T THE ONLY ONE WHO DID THAT
Even in my most recent play through I still had to look for Ralof
That doesn't make much of a difference anyway. Although joining Ralof is definitely a better start, since the imperials have better equipment to loot
I literally never thought of this as a moral decision before since, you know, they're both Daedra and Daedra don't really die
Yeah even Clavicus says Barbas will return in a century or two. Long time but he’s not really gone.
herma-mora laughed
When told to kill Barbas, I actually screeched. I just LOVED that talking dog as soon as he said his first lines. Why would I even consider killing the dog?! I actually wanted to keep the talking dog.
I remember I waited a long time not to finish the quest just so i could have barbus run around with me lol.
@@Cynsham Oh yeah it was so much fun having him constantly blocking your path, and arrow shots, and bumping into you, with the added bonus of barking at you every few seconds. Good times!
Because he's a Daedric prince, and evil bastard, and a manifestation of Clavicus Vile rather than truly being a separate person?
@@bdsman64 you're the only sane person in this thread. that dog made me have to reload from quicksaves uncounted times before i figured out where i was going to get rid of him.
I wanted to as well and I initially misremembered the quest thinking that if you decided not to kill him that he could be kept but I forgot that he gets added to the statue after.
If you killed Paarthurnax you're the evil, not Alduin.
Alduin is now Adolf and Paarthurnax is Goebbels. Try your theory now.
No, because Paarthurnax deserved it
@@johnjaeger2968 even Paarthurnax said he may deserve
Exactly, he killed untold thousands of people and from the point of view of the Blades, there's no way to trust him. How could they know if he's truly reformed? Sure, he helped save the world, but that is not necessarily altruistic and he could easily have been doing it for selfish reasons, like getting rid of a rival who stood in his way of dominance.
Besides how can anything covered in black thorn-like scales, heralding the end times from a mountaintop as fire pours from the sky, and speaking in ancient tongues directly into your head be evil
When all that shits just metal af🤘 the world's gonna eventually end even if it's not alduin rn. Yall death-procrastinatin pansies🎶🎵⚰🎷🎶🎵rip the bandaid it's hella chiller dead than ppl think
Clavi is the Thanos of the series. Half his power = Half of Skyrim would die. Full Power = "EVERYBODY in skyrim would die!"
The helmet is great for shopping-- The armor rating is nothing to laugh at, the weight is fine, the magic restore is acceptable given everything else.
that looks like mask of Loki brother of Thor
So quite possibly it was just some random axe from nearby and not a unique daedra-made axe
Yep, English teacher here, I guess (English as a second language).
Was he supposed to say the axe?
@@MichaelR1275 not really. In that context the axe is technically the new information. New information is usually accompanied with the indefinite article :)
Although again, we technically know that the axe is a part of the story and he could use "the" to mean "that specific axe".
@@atriyakoller136 But isn't AN supposed to be used if the word after it has a vowel sounding letter at the beginning
@@MichaelR1275 if the indefinite article (a/an) is the correct option, then yes.
In short:
If you are choosing between "a" and "an", go with the first sound of the word.
*Arrow hits invisible wall*
*Enemies nearby preventing fast travel*
Even so, nice video.
I used to be a wizard, but I took an arrow in the back of my knee
Kinda opposite with the mehrunes razor artifact for the Dawnstar museum quest. You have to kill the guy in order to get the artifact. If you spare his life and make the moral decision you do not get the mehrunes razor. Gotta love Skyrim
What would have been nice for a 3rd hidden option would be returning to Clavicus after collecting the axe, and, if you attempt to leave without completing the quest (leaving him at half power), he stops you and you can bribe your way into an even better deal.

6:58 - 7:10 if he has the power to snap his fingers, and kill everyone in Skyrim. But half of his power is in Barbas. Does that mean he can now snap his fingers and then kill half of all people.
*Thanos increased to 50*
May be an old reply but also he says that the dragon born is around his power, so I guess the player can also snap half of skyrim

getting the Rueful Axe isn't exactly "failing" the quest, it just means you got tricked by Vile.
Well, I prefer to just reunite Barbas with his master, ask for nothing more and it ends well for everyone. Besides, you can postpone the last leg and just wander around with Barbas. He can bite hard and is marked as an immortal NPC making him one of the best companions you can have
gotta respect the ability to keep making skyrim content this long after it's been released
*Player:* Kills Barbas
*Bethesda:* So you have chosen... Death

*cries in console* i don’t think they’ve added that mod to xbox yet but i wish they would!!
