Led Zeppelin's lead singer, Robert Plant, was brought to tears because of the drummer, Jason Bonham. Jason is the son of John Bonham, the band's original drummer and Robert's best friend, whose death in 1980 resulted in the end of the band. They had invited Jason to represent his Dad at this ceremony honoring Led Zeppelin. But Jason told them he had a scheduling conflict. The conflict turned out to be walking out on stage to surprise the band by playing the drums during the tribute. Look at how surprised and happy Robert is when they introduced Jason at the beginning. The tears came as Robert thought about his friend and was sad he could not be there. It's also very poignant to watch Jason look up toward heaven, thinking undoubtedly about his Dad, as Anne sings the word heaven in last line of the song.
An interesting side note for this performance... Robert Plant is Jason Bonham's godfather, and had invited him to attend the Kennedy Center Honors as his guest. Jason, who had already agreed to surprise the band by playing with Heart (in fact, he is playing his father's session kit...and he also wore John's iconic bowler) outright lied to Robert, saying that he had already committed to a gig in Los Angeles that night. If you get the chance, there are other versions of this video which include Jason being introduced just before Ann & Nancy Wilson, and the look of surprised joy on Robert Plant's face is unbelievably heartwarming.
Ann was 62 here and her sister was about 59..HEART as you know has alot of great songs.."Barracuda", "Magic Man","Crazy On You","Straight On" among many others from the 1970's. 1980's seen songs like "Allone" "Never" "These Dreams" "AllI Want To Do Is Make Love To You"among other songs too....HEART was inducted into the Rock Hall Of Fame a year later in 2013 ...A very Great Band in their own right...
Led Zeppelin are very protective of their music and who sings it So when you get a rousing ovation from them as well as the President,1st lady and all in attendance you have definately made a lifetime accomplishment.
"If you were born after 1999, let me explain, they are watching rock legends- Heart- cover rock gods in front of said rock gods on a night the rock gods are being honored for their rock godliness, choosing the rock gods most famous song and they slayed it!!"
The woman sitting behind John Paul Jones who you disparage is his wife, Maureen. They married in 1967 and have 3 daughters. At this tribute she was 45 years older than she was on their wedding day- about 66, roughly the same age as her husband and Page & Plant were. I suppose we could all make snarky comments about how much ‘better-looking’ older women, and men, were 45 years ago? Personally, I think Maureen is as beautiful as she ever was, and I’d bet you John Paul would agree. Your reaction was entertaining, Dad, but that remark was uncalled for. And it sets a bad example for your young daughter who will, herself, look very different 45 years from now. I hope when that day comes she has a life partner by her side who sees her as the dazzling lady that person fell in love with all those decades ago.
I saw them perform on April 8, 1970 in Dorton Arena, Raleigh, NC. when I was 17. The best concert to this day that I ever saw. That puts them above Jimi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Allman Brothers Band, Jethro Tull and many others. 10 years later the band broke up after the accidental death of the band's drummer, John Bonham. This tribute with Heart brought tears to by eyes. Thank you for your reaction!
NO one else could have pulled this off like they did! The surviving members didn't know that Jason was going to playing in honor of his dad. Most of the performers didn't know it either.
During rehearsals, Dave Grohl was the drummer. He actually did perform that night as well. Before Heart did "Stairway" other artists/bands covered other Led Zepp songs.
Apologies if this was already posted but the Kennedy Center Honors are awarded every year to a handful of exceptional artists, actors, comedians, etc. It's a national endowment for the arts and the award is similar to a lifetime achievement award. Recipients wear a rainbow sash and it's quite a prestigious honor.
Heart is notorious for covering Zeppelin songs in concert. Ann and Nancy Wilson have both said Led Zeppelin was their biggest influence. Check out their Live covers of Kashmir, Battle of Evermore and Black Dog just to name a few.
I can’t imagine playing Jimmy’s guitar solo in front of him 😬😁 Heart does a beautiful job ❤ Led Zeppelin is being honored at the Kennedy Center Honors. I think it’s for significant contributions to music.😊
So wonderful to see you introducing and educating your daughter to this great era of music. I'm 65 and have 2 daughters who are 37 and 35 and they always rib me about teaching them about the music from the 70s. At least they have good taste in music. I have watched this performance many MANY times and each time I get chills and tear up at the precision, emotion and energy of this performance of such an iconic song. Ann and Nancy and all the supporting cast did a great honour to this song.
I, too, raised my kids on this great music! My son, 36, and daughter, 38, love it. Now the grandkids are being introduced to it. Of course, my 14 year old granddaughter hates everything right now, but there's still hope she will come around when she gets out of the horrible teenage stage! LOL!
It is the medal that the Kennedy Center Honors give to those being honored. John Bonham's son, Jason is on the drums. These men family to Jason, Robert is Jason's Godfather. Watching Zep's reactions to this performance is priceless.
You should show her the full version. The one you saw was cut. A whole verse is missing in the middle of the song and Ann Wilson is even more stunning in it :)
First saw Heart in 1976 in my hometown of Kelowna B.C Canada while touring with April Wine, Heart was back up band and also the sisters were young and hot!😊😅 I was 18 back then Ahhh I was so young 😅
Okay, for those of you who are not from the US: the Kennedy Center Honors are sort of the US equivalent of conferring knighthood upon an entertainer. Traditionally the President and First Lady attend, and it's essentially the nation recognizing entertainers for their lifetime achievement in the arts. Among some of the big names in the audience with the Obamas are famous cellist Yo Yo Ma, singer/songwriter Bonnie Raitt, dance legend Debbie Allen, and comedian Stephen Colbert.
Robert Plant is Jason Bonham's Godfather. He surprised him/them by being there. He told them he couldn't make it. So it was twice as emotional seeing him behind his Dad's kit (or replica) and wearing the same (type) Bowler hat as John "Bonzo" wore. That's why the second choir group has them on.
I've watched this umpteen times and I'm not tired of it. Love seeing audience members like YoYo Ma and Debbie Allen getting into it, not to mention the 3 fellas from Led Zeppelin. Is it just me, or does the guy who plays the lead guitar look like Jim Parsons from Big Bang Theory?
Love the dad and daughter music reactions, especially to the great classics. Always great to hear both perspectives. This has to be one of the best live "covers" of all time. Zeppelin is one of my two favorite bands (them and Pink Floyd). I honestly can't think of a better person to sing this than Anne Wilson. And Nancy is an under-rated guitarist and is a perfect person to play some of the key guitar work in this particular song. They also do a great cover of The Battle of Evermore".
On youtube there's a 3-4 minute video of President Obama honoring the Led Zeppelin members at the White House. It's very funny, President Obama has a great sense of humor and great comedic timing
Led Zeppelin was being honored for their contributions to music. One reason Robert Plant teared up was because he was thinking of his best friend John Bonham and watching his Godson playing his dads drum kit. Jason and the choir wore bowler hits to honor John Bonham. It was John Bonham's favorite type of hat. Jason is wearing his dad's hat.
Nice Reaction! The hat Jason and the members of the second Choir that came out were wearing the same kind of hat that John Bonham used to wear. They have this show every year and honor entertainers of all kinds, comedians, actors and musicians. The others that also played songs to honor Led Zeppelin were The Foo Fighters, Kid Rock and Lenny Kravitz.
I have been a HEART Fan since they released their First Album when I was a Teenager (16). I tell people that as a 16 year old Boy I don't know if I fell in ❤ with their Music or if I fell in ❤ with ❤Ann and Nancy❤. I saw them in Concert 3 times and it will be my 4th time seeing them this August 18th in Lincoln Nebraska.
Talking about pressure, I’ve always wondered what it would have been like for the choir: “right, you’ll be singing Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Center with Ann Wilson. The surviving members of Led Zeppelin will be in the audience, as well as the President of the United States. Oh, and their deceased drummer’s son is on drums. Have fun!”
Well said Dashy 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 If only more kids of your generation had that mindset. Idk if its the same in the UK but here in America kids don't expand their music knowledge or listen back to the AMAZING music that was made in the past. We should appreciate and honor pur past more.
Jimmy is "Famous" for NEver playing a song/lead, The same way, Twice. LOL Robert to Jimmy, "Aint Bad"....LMao ( The guys didnt know, Jason was gonna be there. He told them, He couldnt Make it).......LOL The GUYs have Known Ann and Nancy from the 70s. Great friends. The whole NIGHT, is Amazing. This is 1 song....
I like how Jimmy Page deliberately chose not to have any backing vocals in his 1971 recording so that 40 years later they could be added for an enhanced live vocal performance! Well planned, Jimmy!☺

Overall a great reaction! My only suggestion to not pause nearly as much. I do understand that is a reaction and it's done for copyright reasons as well. Many times it wasn't even 30 seconds in-between pauses. It's not just about the experience of your viewers but also yourselves. It's hard to get the overall flow and/or emotion of a performance if it's being stopped so often.
62 and sick with the flu, Ann (and Nancy) bring down the house. IMO, their version is better than the original. But I've always wondered why Nancy didn't do the electric guitar part.
Ann Wilson is a fantastic guitarist who has often played acoustic and rhythm guitar while others play lead on the electric guitar, most notably Roger Fisher of Heart. Roger was an original founder of the band and the lead on their early hits that propelled the band to fame. The arrangement of this performance is very much in Heart's style.
Someone should explain the definition of continuity to these two..........Full Stop.........."Oh look he's smiling"..................Full Stop....Oh look, I think he farted. It's like the blind leading the blind.
Ann Wilson is the GOAT.

I never tire of this performance. And there's Yo Yo Ma jamming up front with Bonnie Raitt snapping her fingers and having a blast

Just came across this and your the only one so far on all channels saw Bonnie Raitt.
