    Love how you teach concepts rather than specific grooves. Much more useful! Great content as always man

    You and Adam Neely are doing us musicians justice. I came across your content today and was amazed on the techniques you show us, not to mention the fact that you describe what the guitars are doing while you focus on the kit, practically.

      Adam Neely's on a whole other level though, his stuff is way more in depth and open whilst mine is really just the big picture about the progressive drumming art. And so thank you for your kind compliments!

    Gavin Harrison wasn't the first to coin the overriding concept. Vinnie Colaiuta was doing it and mentioned it years ago in the Sting song St Augustine in Hell.

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  7 років тому +2

      Good catch, Gavin got the concept from Vinnie. I phrased my words wrongly, I meant to say that Gavin coined the term overriding and not the concept. I'm aware that drummers before him were using it already, like Vinnie Colaiuta and Virgil Donati but Gavin popularized and expanded upon it as well as came up with the term "overriding" when he had to come up with a way to teach it in his set of Rhythmic DVDs. And now Matt's expanded it and the whole world follows suit.

    I think I miss a step bro to construct those grooves, so, for example. I take the 7/8 groove than I write on it a 4/4 snare drum (2 and 4)? that means that the first is correct and then the snare slips of 1 eight note each bar? And so the cycle is complete after 4 bars. Am I correct?
    Sorry for my explanation I hope you understand! :) good skills anyway!

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  6 років тому

      Hey there Bernardo! And yes you are correct that the constant 2 and 4 snare backbeat will slip every bar completing after a cycle of 4 bars, nothing wrong with your explanation. Thanks for checking out my video :)

    • @BernardoGrillo
      @BernardoGrillo 6 років тому

      Thank you for the reply! I also really like the 2nd paradiddle 7/8 groove! Love your style I'm following! :-)

      Thanks Bernardo! It's a really fun groove to play :)

  • @SylarTheBest
    @SylarTheBest 6 років тому

    Hey man, great video! But I think you missed a point here: this part you're mentioning *is* actually in 4/4, not in 7 (that's why when you played everything in 7 you needed that extra 2/4 bar to resolve)
    If you want a clearer example of this Backbeat Overriding concept you're talking about I think the beginning of Mind-Spun or Lippincott are way better and clearer examples of playing a 4/4 beat on top of a groove in 7 (or 11, in the case of Lippincott) while still accenting the odd grouping pattern.
    Keep it up, cheers!

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  6 років тому +2

      Hey you're right about that, when I was doing this video I didn't think much about that. I just wanted to show the concept although there are better fuller examples than this one. I made a tiny mistake here haha thanks for pointing that out, glad you like the video though :)

    super informative and you are really fucking good my dude. Did you study percussion in school? You have really clean technique! The mic sounds for your vox are a little odd sounding, though, which makes it a little difficult to hear what you're saying over the videos audio.

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  4 роки тому

      Oh yes this one's a really old video and my microphone and production techniques were sub par. I did study jazz drumset in school. Never any other forms of percussion though. Thanks for the compliment!

    Can you please tell where did you get these tracks of the guitars from?

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  6 років тому

      Yo I made the guitar tracks myself. By recording an electric guitar into my DAW and using a lot of editing because I suck at playing the guitar :)

    • @laszlo.csige2
      @laszlo.csige2 6 років тому

      Say's sucks at playing the guitar while thumping like a MOFO. What a genious you are sir.

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  6 років тому +1

      it REALLY is heavily edited. I played the thumping pattern at 70% tempo, and only 4-6 notes at a time and just stitched everything together and sped it up. Therefore i don't show myself playing it because I can't really :)

    • @laszlo.csige2
      @laszlo.csige2 6 років тому

      Even though... you broke down the part perfectly. You clearly are very aware and talented musically. Keep up the great work!

      I apologize about the mic situation Hector, I was still fiddling around with different settings and stuff beginning of 2017, but I assure you if you check out my more recent videos, I've sorted out that problem. Thanks for your input and for watching my video Hector!

    is this polyrhythm or polymeter? im confused

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  6 років тому

      Yes it is. But the concept here is not creating a polyrhythm or polymeter. It's basically taking an odd time signature groove and overriding a regular 4/4 snare backbeat over it.

  • @TheApostleofRock
    @TheApostleofRock 7 років тому +1

    isnt this really just changing where snare accents are? unless I'm totally missing the whole concept

    • @shucklesors
      @shucklesors 7 років тому +2

      it is, and hence now there is a different rhythm going on top of 7/8 (which is 4/4). You can think of it as a new way to headbang to that section of the song

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  7 років тому +1

      Hahaha that's a totally fun way to describe this.

  • @DaveFromVh1

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
