- To celebrate the 39th anniversary of the premiere of the original Family Feud, here's an episode from May 1981 (I promise that the next Dawson episode will be from Buzzr).
The Johnsons (featuring Richard's future wife Gretchen) have won $6858 thus far, and are looking for more. Can the Smiths stop them?

I'm so glad Richard got the girl. She was a fine catch for him & only 25 yrs old. So lucky!
He could of choose from aton of women on the show. He was the ultimate alpha male. very attarctive combined with being very witty, could be a docuhe at times, but also a sweetheart. You never know exactly how he was going to act. That's what women want.

Gretchen is so beautiful and has a very sweet and kind nature. Richard was so very lucky to eventually marry her! They were the perfect soulmates.

Amen to that! At least she wasn't a "gold-digging hussy" who just married him for his money, then took him for all he was worth, or leave him for a younger man when he got old and sick. I could tell that she was a good person just by looking at her.

@@nancyking They went together for almost 10 years before they married. She was expecting their daughter, so they decided to marry! Please be sure to listen to Richard tell their love story before he passed away in 2012…..you will be in tears if you are at all sentimental❣️♥️

Actually he met her on a prior episode, the Johnsons were introduced as "champs".
This is the third of four episodes.
They had won twice so he met her on 2 episodes back. It's really wonderful watching these episodes as you can see the love in their eyes right away. Especially Gretchen as Richard tries to hide it!
Man, Richard Dawson had it good. Contestants gave him gifts and he got to make out with their family members.

Richard Dawson silently said "Bam" on that last fast money answer. Ray Combs used to yell it with gusto.
He used it more when a family was gonna win though, Richard did that is. Combs was more in response to an answer being right or a winner in FM after fact.

When Richard was 61, he hosted the third incarnation of "Family Feud" in 1994, but had only a short run. On April 6, 1981, the Johnson family appeared on "Family Feud" and Richard was introduced to 27-year-old Gretchen Johnson. They had a daughter, Shannon Dawson (Shannon Nicole Dawson), in 1990, and were married in 1991. They were still married and reside in Beverly Hills, California. Richard narrated TV's Funniest Game Show Moments (1984) on Fox in early 2000. On Thanksgiving Day, November 23rd, 2000, he hosted a "Family Feud" marathon, which was filmed in 1995. Some people hear the name Richard Dawson and may not recognize the name. But say his name, followed by his famous quote "Survey says...!" or mention "Newkirk on Hogan's Heroes (1965)", and they're sure to know who you mean. Richard Dawson died at age 79 of complications from esophageal cancer on June 2, 2012.

Everyone being so disgruntled by Richard kissing all the female contestants, well, at the time, he wasn't married, 2nd after he started dating Gretchen and had their daughter Shannon, he promised Shannon that he would stop kissing the contestants and only kiss her mommy, out of respect. People just need to lighten up. This was before the era of AIDS so nobody thought anything messed up about a peck on the lips geez

no he started dating Gretchen in 1981, and she moved into his house about a year later in 1982, he was kissing women until he left the show for the first time in 1986, so he was still kissing women even after he was dating Gretchen for five years. They would not marry for 10 years in 1991, their daughter Shannon was a year old when they married.

A pearl isn't a stone but rather a biological product but still considered a gem. All other gems are geological in nature rather then a biological one.

Nah, he wasn't flirting just asking about her particular career field. I think it may have been a cover up for Gretchen & Richard since I'm sure the entire Johnson family knew they were checking each other out. Gretchen was just more subtle about it than Wendy. That's how Gretchen hooked him in my opinion 😊

In May 1981, Richard Dawson was 48. He is also clearly smitten with Janet Smith 5:06 2:50 and openly flirts with her beyond his customary friendly kiss. Janet Smith fits Dickies attraction to petite blonde ladies (Ex-Wife Diana Fluck Dors and his gal, Jody Donovan) . . . and we see Richard appears a bit taken with Wendy Johnson too. As well, I believe there was an interview years later that revealed Dickie liked all of the Johnson girls. Why would anyone blame him? Dickie had been single for over a decade in 1981, and stated endlessly in interviews and to his friends that he had always thought there would be another lady in his life after Diana. He just wanted to find his Princess and the woman that was meant to be the Love of His Life Forever
