Family Feud 1975 pilot (Better quality)

- All the surveys, Fast Moneys, and GSN marathons started with this singular show in 1975. Still hosted by Richard Dawson, but with several noticeable differences - particularly the rather hokey-looking set.
This is far from the first time this pilot has been on UA-cam, but this copy is very easily the best quality I've seen of this.

What a pilot! Wow! That non-blue egg shaped game board is bizarre!!!
It kinda looks like Richard Karn's last set!
Know I originally uploaded the lower quality version - thanks so much for this! The color levels in particular are just SO much nicer than my current copy. You rock!
Thanks. Part of the color clarity was me color correcting in Sony Vegas to match the brief clip shown in Game Show Marathon. But the source copy was already a lot better than most.
"I have a terrible feeling you were made by Mattell"
😂🤣
This pilot set gives me claustrophobia.
That is amazing...what a great job Richard Dawson did right from the start AND the format of the game was great from the start also!
The Speir family would compete on a Family Feud episode in 1977, where Richard introduced them as one of the pilot families 'whom helped get this show on the air.'
Woodie B. Thanks for that Woodie. I was wondering if either or both families would get to compete again, since the Speir family originally didn't get to come back as the reigning family. Do you know if that episode is on UA-cam?
@@whirliebird74 I'm glad that Richard acknowledged that family.
Love this game, and show 💙
That's because the front game was the tried-and-trued Super Match audience poll from Match Game '7x/PM, except it being have more answers than the top three answers, and was a survey of exactly 100 random people, whereas the size of a MG studio audience can vary.
According to someone online, this is pilot #3, taped May 6, 1976.
Richard hosted his rear end off for this pilot. Great all the way around.
I see that one change from the pilot is each family member gets a turn to do the face off instead of only the head of the family.
The combining rule also doesn't seem to have been like it is now. "Dance" and "tango" would be the same thing, yet they're listed separately in this pilot.
@@PhirePhlame that's true, but we also use "It takes two to Tango" as a slang for other things Like fighting and auguring
The show’s beauty was in it’s simplicity. The current version is over the top, and looking to shock the audience with immature questions and answers.
*BOOM!*
So true 👍🏻
I give steve harvey credit for paying tribute to richard dawson 11 years ago.
People who watched game shows in 1976 probably said the same thing
True!!
On the pilot they had a back and forth between both families and the first family who ever played fast money won it ! Awesome way to start! Best way to have a pilot!

A legend was born.
In what was to become Episode #0 in the history of Family Feud, here's a surprise: Johnny Olson, one of the most famous game show announcers, did this version himself instead of Gene Wood. Still he introduced Richard Dawson, the first and famous host of FF!
Dawson ruled this show. It was never as good after he left.
@Adam Stabelli So was Richard Karn, from "Home Improvement".
@@armorybrunotjr.3204 Richard Karn was good, but a bit on the quiet side.
Dawson walked so Harvey can run.
@@luxerhusku2609Ugh, Steve Harvey is the worst...
@@Studebrickerhe needs to retire like pat Sajak did but pat deserves his because he was there since 1982 and and people think he was the shows’ original host.
Richard was the best by far. We watched the first episode and just kept watching! So happy to find these and relive good TV for a change. Today's show is terrible compared to this.
This is so good. I love the energy of these people.
So this is how it all began!
Happy 45th anniversary to Family Feud!
The family podiums are much closer to each other
It’s odd to hear Johnny Olson’s voice here, but pleasant as ever!
Gene Wood was made for this show, just as Johnny was made for TPIR and Match Game.
Yeah, Olson and Wood were the go to announcers for Goodson/Toddman shows.
Though, when Gene Wood was unable to come to tapings, Johnny Gilbert filled in
@@erikbunty2016I would agree, Gene Wood had that grandfatherly soft tone and complimented Richard quite well.
@@ABCEasyas-- Bob Hilton was normally Gene's substitute.
Richard Dawson was the best Family Fued host.
No Steve Harvey is
@@CJ-sz1pw Richard was an incredible host (the best)
John O'Hurley was my favorite and Burton Richardson was my favorite too
Richard Dawson is the most charismatic and funniest Alpha male that has ever been on tv
@@CJ-sz1pw Steve Harvey has too much controversy, Richard Dawson was the only man who ran Family Feud host from start to finish.
This was being pitched to all 3 networks at the time:ABC,CBS and NBC. NBC didn’t want it because they had several game shows at the time,CBS didn’t want to pay what they wanted for the pilot and ABC needed some type of game show to compete with the other two networks! ABC bought it!!
I thought I remember hearing something that Mark Goodson wanted it as a companion to Match Game on the CBS daytime lineup, but the eye network wasn't willing to bite. Things would work out with getting it on ABC though, as well as in syndication for a while.
This is stellar!
I love how it's got a more Family Fortunes vibe, so this was not only before Fortunes, and so was the set of Fortunes originally from Feud.
My English is bad because I'm on an Alexa so when I wrote half the sentence I couldn't go back to update it, it's too finicky.
Richard not only used that same Jack Lord joke on the series premiere, but also on an episode of Match Game '75!
Congrats to the "green bumblebee, Ida," to be the very first girl that Richard Dawson gloated over. Man, what a legend.
Excellent Family Feud pilot!!
The more I watch this pilot, the more I realize that Louie Anderson's and Richard Karn's sets were closer to resembling the Dawson/Combs/O'Hurley/Harvey sets than this pilot's, and this considering that the aforementioned sets were complete revamps.
Good pilot episode.
Richard later said when the producers were looking for a host, they almost picked William Shatner!
They did. He was their first choice (Can you imagine? How different history would have been if they did). Dawson had to push for an audition. He was promised one for Mark Goodson's next project before this but almost didn't get it. Had he not demanded the promise honored, he'd not have gotten a shot/got the gig most likely.
Ahh, the days before COVID when everything was closer together
So true!
Certainly no wasted space on this set. The families could shake hands standing at their own podiums.
Read somewhere else that this was taped in February 1976, so not quite 1975 but still super early!
Just the very beginning of Pilot Family Feud
RIP Richard Dawson
26:58 - This is Johnny Olson speaking for "Family Feud," a Mark Goodson-Bill Todman production!
Miss you
Superb host
not once have I ever seen someone pass until now
I've seen it a few times, but not many.
1:00 as well as not wanting to keep having the majority of contestants have me involved when playing the head to head
I really wish BUZZR airs this whenever they get it.
pilot!feud’s stage is so damn weird, it feels like what you’d see on a skit making fun of the fud.
the general western aesthetic is there, but it feels so... off. the face off board being so low makes it feel real cramped, too.
still nice to see that they had the general aesthetic down, and what game show can’t be improved with a little johnny o?
This sort of looks like the set they patterned the SNL skit with Bill Murray as Dawson with the Coneheads
Whoa.. isn't the tango a dance? I would have thought it would be included in the dance response.
Tango is a dance, but I'm guessing it was included in the context of the famous saying "it takes two to tango", which usually isn't used in reference to the dance itself. The only example I really know of where the saying applies would be when one spouse cheats on the other. Whether it's the cheating spouse to blame, or the one he or she is cheating with, neither one are acting alone, thus "it takes two to tango".
Early on they split answers like this a lot... I recall an question where they asked for a Jewish food and both matzoh and matzoh ball were on the board. I would guess the answers were later combined to make the game easier/move along faster.
What a game!
We don't hear the familiar ring-in sound when they do the face-off... and the family members' names are right on the podiums, something never seen in any incarnation of FF after this.
Also, only the heads of the families are facing off, there are no double point value survey questions, no families shouting "good answer". It took only 200 points to win the match.
The "name any president, living or dead" question was a bit too easy, yet they sure bumbled and fumbled a lot with it! (Couldn't even remember first names!)
Yes they seemed nervous. I get that.
Imagine asking that question nowadays. I'm sure they Still couldn't get it.
The E! True Hollywood Story tells all.
21:57 Fast Money. Classic bonus game.
This should be considered the very first ever Family Feud introduction because Richard Dawson was the only man who hosted the show from start to finish.
I don’t get your point
@@jasontassinari5348 They mean that, the family feud we know now (1999-now) had 4 hosts: Louie Anderson (1999-2002), Richard Karn (2002-2006), John O'Hurley (2006-2010) and Steve Harvey (2010-now). That was the Feud's 3rd run. Its second run ran from 1988-1995 with Ray Combs (1998-1994) and Dawson's return (1994-1995). The first run (1976-1985) only had Dawson hosting. That's what @worldwide4376 means by Dawson was the only person that hosted "Family Feud" from it's premiere to finale.
@jasontassinari5348 what he meant was he hosted this version until its cancellation.
@@devares2006 1976 to 1985
@@worldwide4376 yes.
, never, has seen this but, just, saw an interview, in which Richard Dawson mentioned it. I thought I'd check, here, to see if, by chance...and, here 'tis. Can't wait, to view it! Thank-you, "Guy..."!
Interesting how the set looked.
I read that Mark Goodson originally wanted either Jack Narz, Geoff Edwards, and even William Shatner to host the "Family Feud".
I think Joe Namath was the choice
William Shatner came close, and Goodson definitely wanted him. Joe Namath was the one that producer Howard Felsher wanted to host the 80's revival, but Goodson had second thoughts and didn't think he was the right fit. Ray Combs got the job; he was Goodson's choice and he was very loyal to Ray.

In 1975, five people really could have a nice dinner for $186!
I love Paula's, Ida's and Lisa's outfits!
Great upload, thanks! I've never seen the pilot I don't think. Here's a question for people who really pay attention. The flip board can hold 12 answers, but was there ever a time they used all 12? I don't remember seeing even 10. I think I remember seeing 9 once but it could be just my imagination.
I DEFINITELY remember there being a Top 10 survey, but, I only ever saw that once, on the original Dawson version. I'll have to look for it.
I'm almost certain there's never been a Top 11, and I'm positive there was never a Top 12.
I wouldn't mind seeing this boards color scheme mashed up with the board used during the series. Idk why lol

Already a broken buzzer (sort of)
One of these families was on an ABC episode.
I think it's first time I saw some pass table
Let's face it-Richard Dawson was the definitive host for this show. He's the reason the show is still “successful” today. I only put quotation marks because it's much too dirty nowadays (nothing against Steve Harvey).
Taped at CBS not ABC
Yeah I believe this pilot was taped at CBS Television City. No doubt Goodson/Todman probably pitched the show to CBS before ABC.
I cannot help but wonder if the contestants were coached on the questions and answers.
6:45 way before Steve Harvey was the host and way before the Miss Universe controversy haunted him
Johnny Olson announcing
My fave announcer but Gene Wood was more suited for feud
This episode was made when Steve Harvey was in school.
Did anyone else notice the line from The Running Man at the beginning?
NATIONWIDE TELEPHONE SURVEY? WOW
before the episodes aired on gsn and buzzr
Loudness Warning: Wear Headphones and you'll be sorry.
This set looks so tiny before 1976.

Let’s play The Running Man!
Bass Boosted: Family Feud 1975
Trumpet, cinnamon, frog, alphabet, Porsche
Johnny Olson!
Spier family is annoyingly competitive
I guess it's because of TPIR and Match Game, Johnny didn't do FF.
And Concentration hosted by Jack Narz
@@arthuridis Oh, I forgot about Jack Narz' Concentration. I was thinking network shows, that's why
Thank gosh the set changed. This is ugly for 70s standards
Richard Dawson not kissing anyone!? How weird!
Kissing is ok in Europe but taboo in America?......yet we have open dating sites on TV
But I noticed he kissed the female contestants at the very end of the program!
He didn't do that at first. It was a little into the run that that started.
"Richard-dawson isn't that the same-british-guy who portray's corporal-newkirk on the 1965-1971 tv-sitcom hogan's-hero".
Yes he is
adele hello
So is tango not considered a dance?
It was later corrected when they replayed the question in one of the later taping's after it aired. (Can't remember if it's one of them from 77 or 78) When they replayed it and after one of the family members said dance, it now read as Dance/Tango
Why are JFK and LBJ listed that way?
Like the other family feud better.
geeze you couldn’t even say “sex” on tv in 1975
Huh?
The remakes and revamps of these old classics are never good. The only one who was anywhere near as good as Richard was Steve Harvey. Even the latest try with To Tell the Truth was a bomb. The panel was full of superficial "stars" who were loud, rude and uneducated. And what was the host's mother doing there? Richard is a class act and no one will be able to match him.
"My fantasy the invisible-troupe my cousin greg-winslow & myself @ home inside the abandoned acme-market on route-61 in shamokin land of messopotamia northumberland-county ioml".
And thus began an American institution.
Lord i know the best is the same but it's awful I like the ones after the pilot

If they ask the President question today, the number one would likely be either Obama or Trump. Biden might be 3, followed by JFK, Nixon, Bush, Clinton, and maybe either Washington or Eisenhower.
Boy he aged terribly because of his 3 pack a day cigarette habit!
I liked this show better when he wasn't kissing women on the mouth, just the cheek, and just hugging them. Wasn't he handsome here?! *drool*
You're all right. Richard Dawson was the only host who ran Family Feud from start to finish. Steve Harvey took over the show with high ratings but it's too filthy and disgusting. The only way out of Steve Harvey controversy is to have a woman hosting the family game show.
That’s the only true claim to fame for the shows high ratings is the filthy questions. To me it’s very tacky but it seems to work. I stopped watching many years ago.
@@a.b.s_productions Yeah, you're right. I stopped watching Steve Harvey's early Family Feud show because too many filthy answers like Penis, Naked Grandma, Porn, Gerbil and Testicle.
Not interested in FF if Steve Harvey is host.
I remember when CBS had that Game Show Marathon celebrity tournament, and Ricki Lake did a pretty decent job hosting in the Family Feud final.
Ugly board, strike graphic, and set. Not even the famous buzz in sound in face off was there yet.
It's the pilot episode, what do you expect?
I wonder if Dawson was as creepy as he looked.
