    For those comments - he's not saying they're errors, just that they're something you can notice to 'ruin your day'. Since clicking 'show more' is too difficult.
    BTD-1 : tail is accurately modeled to the real plane (like the rest)
    Tiger 2 : designed that way (this includes tiger 1, panther, and several others, there are also tanks with the entire turret off center, like the panzer 4).
    (a random hole isn't random if it's intentional :P )
    Mi-24 has a real 2.5 degree tilt and it's fuggly
    Hebrew is written backwards to English (right to left), so it's a direct translation without rearrangement... that's my theory anyway lol
    H-111 cockpit - like all asymmetrical bombers, is where the bomber sits / lays down, the design benefit is that the guy can either be in a chair that tips forward, or actually lays down with his head up in that point.

      people who think Mi-24 asymmetry is ugly clearly show how they don't care the science behind it.
      function over form, it what makes designs unique between engineers & design bureau.

    • @black_thunder2159

      i guess to make it slightly clear; in aircraft there is torque.
      basically, if these designs were symmetrical they wouldn't be able to fly straight without u continuously pushing the rudder to one side, and this is a nightmare on takeoff & landing while being super inconvenient during flight.
      this applies to conventional-layout helicopters, while torque is already taken care off by adding tail rotor.
      there's still *dissymmetry of lift* because of how rotors work, which are basically spinning plane wings.
      to put it simply;
      the main rotor spins to one direction, the advancing side (same direction with the helicopter) generates more lift, and the retreating side (against the direction of the helicopter) generates less lift.
      there are speed limit for helicopters not (only) because they have small engines, its because if they go any faster one side would generate so much lift the helicopter would just do an uncontrollable barrel roll.
      for several helicopters, this wont be too noticeable, but Mi-24 has a strong translating tendency (because of both main rotor torque & tail rotor force pushing it to the side) on hover which makes it continuously drifts sideways so the engineers had to tilt the rotor 2.5 degrees to the side to balance it out, and because of this the helicopter fuselage could remain flat during landing & hover.
      this may sound like an inconvenience, but this design also allows Mi-24 to accelerate even further while remaining flat, this is why Mi-24 flies faster than Black Hawk despite having a similar overall size.
      i guess i could also mention about the A-10 (a modified Mi-24B Hind, not Warthog), which is a lighter variant of regular Hind B with no stub wings, which are piloted by an all-female crew & broke the speed record. (until the other Hind being the uncanny single-seated Mi-24LL PSV beat the record recently)
      basically, the Hind & G-lynx (faster) are the only two fastest conventional helicopters in this world.
      all conventional helicopters suffer from all of the issues above, even the seemingly symmetrical helicopters like Apache or European Tigers have it too, most helicopters solved this by adding bias in cyclic control & some tilt on the tail rotor, however, this won't stop the whole helicopter from being tilted a few degrees anyway, Mi-24 just have a stronger issue, so the designer had to fix it.

      It's to reduce the effects of the spiraling slipstream. Offsetting the stabilizer helps it align with the slip stream (but not completely) as it tends to hit the rudder, moving it to the right which then moves the nose left.

    The off center tail on the BTD-1 (and all the other rapid fire planes at the end) is actually for a very specific reason. The air from the propellers channels around the fuselage in a spiral pattern and adds torque on the tail section, the off center section makes it so that the pilot doesn’t have to apply constant rudder input to maintain a straight and level flight path. Or something like that, idk, I’m not an aeronautical engineer.
    Edit: it’s also probably the same for the MC-202, except the engineers probably had an issue with torque rolling the aircraft, so they made one wing longer to give that side more lift to keep it level.

  • @tramlink8544
    @tramlink8544 2 роки тому +46

    1:51 they actually had non symetrical wings in real life. reason was the longer wing would counteract the rotational force of the propeller with its larger lift. this meant pilots in flight had to trim much less for this compared to pilots from other nations

  • @ryanbudrow531
    @ryanbudrow531 2 роки тому +1239

    • @robins4209
      @robins4209 2 роки тому +112

      Well, it's not really to counter the torque of the engine, that's typically done with trim tabs etc.
      The primary reason to have an offset tailfin is to counter the slipstream that the propeller generates.
      The propeller pushes air in a circular motion around the fuselage of the plane, when that air finally reaches the aft section of the aircraft it hits the tailfin and creates a yawing effect on the plane.
      To counter that yawing motion, we can offset the tailfin that the propeller slipstream hits.

    The turret assymetry of the m1 abrams is not just a visual feature. If someone inspects the protection of the cheeks with the protection analysis, one can see that the left cheek has noticably better protection, than the right (where the gunner sight is), despite the fact that in the x-ray view, both has the same composite armour type and thickness.
    For the Mi-24, the assymetry was a purposeful design choice. It is even mentioned in one of the shooting range episode. The point of the assymmetry is to offset the centre of mass such that the induced torque counteracts the natural roll tilting torque of the rotors at cruise speed.

    The off center rudder at 0:38 is intentional due to the torque caused by the propellor.. In reality, when you fly a single engine prop, you have to give it right rudder constantly. I have flown 172 cessnas as i am a private pilot, and it is indeed a right leg workout. The more power you give the engine, the more right rudder you have to input. also when you pitch up or down, gryoscopic precession wants to shift the plane in a yawing direction. pitching down causes it to yaw left, and pitching up wants it to yaw right. This is why an aircraft like the P38 was so much less of a hassle to fly since the counter rotating props negated the need for the right leg workout. It can be very tiring in reality..

      There are 3 physical reasons tails may be offset. 1st is the gyroscopic procession due to the spinning engine/propeller.
      2nd is the extra thrust from the upward spinning blade while the aircrafts angle of attack is pitched upward.
      3rd is the direction the air flows around the fuselage and strikes the tail

    The MI24's main rotor is angled to one side to counteract translating tendency. Or the tendency of the aircraft to drift sideways at a hover, due to the spinning of the rotor system. Many helicopters, if you watch them hover, they tend to hover with one side hanging lower than the other, and that's because the pilot (or flight computer on modern helicopters) is inputting a sideways cyclic input, to prevent sideways drift.
