If you haven't yet, I highly suggest Meshuggah (Chaosphere is one of my favourite albums but Obzen is a classic) as well as Gojira (The Way Of All Flesh) is a phenomenal album. I think those 3 albums are a great starting point, especially Chaosphere and The Way Of All Flesh for someone coming from older metal. I grew up on EVH and he's definitely shaped the way I play

No problem! Glad it was helpful. I also neglected theory for a long time and eventually had to sit down and learn it. Luckily my friend taught me. It definitely made me relearn guitar and feel a bit uncomfortable for a month or so
I should have thought about that beforehand but I could likely come up with some sort of tab or guitar pro as well. I unfortunately deleted the drum groove as I didn’t think I’d need it but I can definitely create some sort of tab and link it in a pinned comment later on.

I hoping for the chug section, you would've went over how to get the metallic clank. And the djent quack. Those are two things i want so bad. I'm doing everything right and still can't get it. The only thing i haven't done enough is pickup height. Or idk if it's a recording technique? Im 100% digital, which makes it more frustrating bc I'm sure that's the easiest way to get that tone.

For string skipping do you have any tips for reducing string noise? I don’t have issues at slower speeds but as I try to speed up, I keep running into extra string noise 😞 thanks for the video, definitely using these to ease me back into things after a few years away from playing!
Glad to help out! Aside from practicing it at slower tempos and gradually increasing it until your comfortable, I’d say try to block the string your skipping with your fretting hand - either if you have a finger you’re not using in the riff or slightly block it with whatever finger that is already fretting on the above string

Likely still 12,13 and 22. I mostly use my Squier bass vi and it’s only 22 frets. it would be 6,5,5 - 7,6,6 - 3, 2, 2 because the first 2 notes(6,5) are a diminished sound and the first and last note (6*, 5, 5*) are a semitone apart. So we get 2 destructive note combinations in one chord that makes it sound as heavy as it is. Thanks for watching. Hope that makes sense

your so called "djent chug" is a technique that's far older than djent. mostly played on bass though while slapping. so called doubleslapping. mark king made it quite famous in the 80s. famous in the funk and bass world at least. :P
Oh that’s awesome. Another huge technique in prog metal is another bass technique of the double thump. I believe Victor Wooten is credited as making it popular but that may also be a technique even older than that. Thanks for the info!
JACO made it famous :) ... but you're absolutely right, as well as the fact that every one of these techniques have been used for the last 40 to 50 years since the advent of them Mesa Mark 1 and hi gain heads got popular, everyone started discovering more abilities to play these. another thing that will help with the court voicings in the progression he played at the end, is actually cutting your gain by rolling the volume knob down to about three or four, it makes those cord voicings more articulate and pop out

I love monuments, tetrarch, etc, as well as a lot more mainstream, gulp, like Slipknot, bullet, A7X, wage war, crown the Empire. everything in this new age genre is getting better and better and making more use of all of these techniques that he showed. The phrygian mode has become a dominant mode to use, whereas when I was learning, harmonic minor was the cool thing. lol
@gkswift1999 DUDE harmonic minor was definitely the way to go when I was learning as well hahah. Literally every band was using the C harmonic minor scale shape in whatever tubing they were using. I gotta revisit that again as it’s been a while

@@BrendonKPadjasek i wish i learned it when i was younger, i'm 35 now and i've dedicated my whole life to making electronic music and mixing so i guess the ship has sailed. but we have guitar vsts now and i really want to explore that because i want to start a project and do metal + electronic, which is pretty much what progressive bands are trying to do now keeping up with the times. so the short answer is probably most likely no. i'd love to have a guitar just for sound design though. I intend to learn to sing and scream properly (i commented on your other video where you were teaching vocal techniques). lets see how it goes. if depression and anxiety doesn't get the better of me it might just happen. thank you for engaging with your viewers and fans. i love your music and chatting with you makes the little fan boy in me happy
