    we start with a simple one, the Air filter.
    First we start with disconnecting the multi plug and releasing a spring clip to remove the Air pipe. Now it is just two lever clips to unfasten and we can remove the Air box lid entirely, revealing the filter for us to swap out.
    (NOTE) before fitting the new filter, ensure no debris is sat in the Air box, this will instantly contaminate the new filter when fitted.
    Oil change. I always pull up the dipstick and open the oil filler cap to allow air into the engine when draining. this makes sure there isn't a vacuum effect which can slow down the oil from draining.
    a 19mm socket or spanner can release the drain plug (remember to replace with new).
    when thats finished draining, we put an oil pan to catch any remaining drips as we move on to the oil filter.
    Remember that vacuum effect we mentioned? the oil filter housing always holds a certain amount of oil. when we release the filter cap, the air enters the system and allows that oil to drain further down into the sump. This extra oil can now be drained because we didn't instantly fit the new sump plug. This extra oil, when not drained properly can also result in spillages when removing the filter, so draining in this way can just make life a little less messy for you.
    The Oil spec for these engines have slight variations but the information you need should be on screen when we are filling the system. the oil capacity as listed on our Tech data is 7litres.
    Pollen / cabin filter. This is located under the left hand side of the dash. below the glove box, there is a plastic panel with 3 T20 screws. undo these and youll see the housing for the Heater/ fan system.
    there is a rectangular cover held on with Two 5.5mm bolts which will allow you to remove the filter.
    remember to make note of which direction the air flows, as the new filter you fit is directional.
    Fuel Filter. first youll need to move the coolant reservoir out of the way. Unplug the multiplug and two T25 screws that secure it to the frame. then youll be able to see the fuel filter. this set uo has 4 terminals and 4 pipes that connect to it. each terminal is marked and should correspond with the replacement filter, so make sure you know where each pipe goes. undo a 10mm bolt which secures the filter in place, move the filter up slightly and you should have enough room to get your fingers in to release the fuel pipes. then, remove and replace. if you incorrectly fit the filter, the one eay valves inside will not allow the flow of fuel and you wont be able to start the engine.
    Priming. alot of people have said you should fill the filter with diesel before fitting. This is a good way of doing it without diagnostic equipment. we DO NOT recommend just cycling the ignition off and on and forcing the engine to turn over without fuel until it primes.
    always use a diagnostic tool where you can to activate the fuel pump to increase the fuel pressure within the system. then you can cycle the ignition to get an initial pressure boost before starting the engine.
    then when youve done all that, you can reset your oil change interval with diagnostic equipment.
    VW group systems have variable service intervals, so you'll need a diagnostic tool to reset to your specific service need.

    question next to the fuel filter there is another silver tube what is that is that another fuel filter in line with the big one you replaced and if so when should that small one be replaced

    Really great video. A few small things which could make it perfect... 1. Could you show best way to fill the fuel filter with diesel in order to prime it without diagnostics please? Or will running the pump by switching on the ignition a few times work? (without turning the engine over) 2. What is the recommended oil for this motor? (rookie question I know) 3. Turning the music down a bit in the edit a bit would improve the vid

      Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep that in mind for future videos.
      The oil grade is shown in the video. It shows the VW requirement. But if you supply the reg number to your part supplier they should be able to look up the required oil for your engine.
      I'll do a separate video just concerning the fuel filter next chance I get and I'll cover the different ways of priming. Just cycling the ignition on doesn't provide enough pressure to fully prime the system.

    What if you don't have the Diagnstic tool, how do you prime the pump? Does it matter if you use the wrong oil, ie for DPF but you don't have one? I was going to use Castrol Edge PRO SW30. Thank you for the clear and concise video.

      If you don't have a diagnostic tool, you also won't be able to reset the service indicator.
      But to prime the filter, you can fill it with clean diesel by pouring it in the top.. This can be messy and be sure you use clean diesel and not diesel ripped out from the old filter.
      If you call your local parts company they should be able to tell you what oil they list as a suitable replacement.

    How long to prime the fuel pump, 30s enough?

      Each cycle of the priming system takes around 30 seconds. We usualy run that atleast 3 times to make sure. Initial crank might take a little time to start up but shouldn't be excessive.
