Forgotten Race Tracks - Gransden Lodge Cambridgeshire
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 бер 2022
- Gransden Lodge was the race venue of choice for the first race after WW2. It would have been a difficult time for all yet some enthusiasts were committed to racing.
Thanks to the Bugatti Trust who provided the historic footage.
If like me, you enjoy motorsport, history and looking at pieces of tarmac... you'll love "Forgotten Race Tracks" where we take a look at some of the old and abandoned race tracks around England.
From Drag strips to Formula 1 circuits, in this short series, we'll be investigating what remains of Britain's motor racing history.

Gotta love how this series is actually a low key history of abandoned WW2 airfields
Gotta love how the Cambridge folk around the WW2 Airfield elected Heidi Allen as MP, probably unware that her Mum was German ...
26 March 2023: Congratulations on reaching 508 Subscribers Jon. Stick with it fella, I can see you easily passing 600 🙂
In 6 months it’s gone from 500 subscribers to 45.3k! And you really deserve it! Haha love the ‘small disagreement’ reference 🤣 excellent video.
Thanks for watching as always!
Another 40k in 5 months.
I hope he smashes through 100k by this Christmas
A very underrated (currently) series. Visiting forgotten race circuits is such a good idea for racing fans!!!!!
Thanks for watching mate... History is what makes us who we are.
Worth trying the "Circuits of the Past" YT channel who do a similar thing as well
Kimbolton Banger Racing Club
Track is behind Bicton Ind Est at PE280LF
I used to go and watch with my Dad, in the late 70s & early 80s
As a boy of 5 years old it was fantastic, and started me on my Oval Racing journey at an early age. Now a man of 50, I look back with great fondness of these times, and all the great memories from this forgotten venue.
They used to have three formulas race at Kimbolton as a regular thing, Bangers, Hotrods, and Mini Contact. I do remember Grand Prix Midgets also, but they may have been guests at various times.
Go and walk the track. It's the shortest small Oval in England, and it still there under the Grass ,Mud and Weeds.
I walked it with my Daughter, not so long back.
Their are a few remains of buildings on site, but be careful, they are very week.
Good luck Sir

500 subs? I joined 4 days ago at 7.5k and it’s now 11.5k subs! Keep up the great work John.
Same here
I joined about a week ago at 1.6k and it's now 13.1k! I think the UA-cam algorithm has found his audience. I said on another thread I was predicting 50k by the end of August. I might have to adjust that up a bit!
...1 day later, it's at 14.2K. The YT algor's are earning their bytes!
@@whyyoulidl 16.3k 1 day later
Further 2 weeks later and now on 24.2k subs. I too joined recently about 3 weeks ago. Gransden Lodge is very near me, I never knew this part of its history though
500 subscribers! Mad how you’ve grown since! :)
great series!
Just found the your channel, love lil obscure bits like this
Hilarious out takes! 😆
Amazing the history that’s now under farmland
Excellent , thanks John.
Great video as always mate and another intresting and informative video. And love the out takes mate.
haha, I'm glad. I don't usually get good outtakes.
You'd be a much better presenter on that old show known as "Top Gear" than what I've seen of a lot of them. Not that there aren't some great ones but some of them SHEESH! But what do I know I'm a Canadian (Other wise now known as Chinanda due to the evil....oops none of that NOW!). Anyway you're concise deliberate and funny with a shot of cheek (as you Brit's might say) and it's very entertaining. Thank You! All the best and all the success! Subbed!
It was always the dream to be on Top Gear. Not so much these days, it's not as good as it was. Thanks for watching! How's Canada.. I've never been but I think I'd like it.
Keep up the good work!
Need a colab with the map men or Tom Scott to get this channel out there to the right audience
Excellent video. That's my village that is! Can just about see the gliding club from our upstairs window.
There was a thing in WW2 called the Gransden Lodge Modification. If I remember right it was something to do with bomber turrets, they cut away some of the perspex so the gunner was exposed more to the freezing conditions but would have a better view of the nightfighter.
I had not heard of this... fascinating!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_turret
…reduced the temperature in the turret - which was typically very low - by *only* four degrees
Excellent video.
I really enjoy your presentation style, or lack of.
You'd have thought I'd have it down by now but nope.. I'm pretty rubbish 🤣

I like it, deliberate or otherwise !
I love looking at these locations on Google earth. If you use the timeline feature you can go back to 1945. You can definitely see some buildings that aren't there now.
How do I find the Timeline feature?
@@joylunn3445 I think it's only available on Google Earth (not Google maps) Bottom left hand corner of the map, I have an icon that says 1985. Click on that and it brings up a floater menu where you can see a range of satellite images by dragging the pointer to various years.
I work just across the road from there so I know of it
It was very nearly going to be made into a purpose built GP circuit, but apparently Silverstone won the bid or got the contract “or something like that”
Local to me! Nice find bud.😀
It's also quite local for me.. it's always a bonus if you don't have to get up at 5am to go and film :D Thanks for watching!
Grew up near here never knew of this
Saw this from the air when i went flying out of Little Gransden a few weeks ago
Hey Jon, recently found your channel as I’ve had a bit of time on my hands thanks to the dreaded ‘C’ virus. You’ve kept me entertained and I think I’ve watched all of the videos you have uploaded 🤣🤣, so thank you for your time and efforts 👍🏼
Just wondering if your going to race Mother Nature this year?
I have a mildly modified 252,000 mile 2006 e61 530d that I want to see if it can make it, or send me your time and I’ll try and beat that 😬😂
Cheers again 👍🏼
Welcome aboard and thanks for watching! Good question and not something I can answer yet... something will happen this year but we've done the East/West race twice now so might do something different. At the moment, it's all about that cashflow and sadly committing to any larger scale event is proving a little difficult. 530D.. that's a bit of me ;) and at 252,000 miles! Glad to see a car get driven properly. I heard someone in our group did Lands End to Lowestoft in 5hours 57 mins ;) I cannot confirm or deny such a claim.
A slight disagreement 😂 excellent channel and wonderful sense of humour.
Just on my doorstep
Many memories from this area
Have you explored Kimbolton Banger RACING Track ?
It's still there, walked it couple of years ago
Go and report, that would be Awsome 😆👍👍👍👍
That's local to me, never heard of it. What's its exact location?
Wartime ghosties at GL.
Gransden Lodge. Now home to the most cliquey unwelcoming gliding club in the world.
Sorry to hear that... after they'd spotted us wandering around they couldn't have been more pleasant despite us walking onto their live airfield a little bit. oops.
pointless lol
Why?
