I once went to watch the racing at Oliver's Mount in the late 90s. I had gone on my VFR400 with the girlfriend on the back. I was informed on arrival, that because I was there early, I'd inexplicably won the chance to go around the circuit with other civilians accompanied by then British Superbike rider Dean Ashton. You can't pass up an opportunity like that. So we went and got a good sport and waited for the PA to call us. At the allotted time, I, along with other nervous looking people, gathered at the circuit entrance and had the safety briefing. Which was "Don't fall off. People are watching" or words to that effect and off we went. A few years previous to this, I had actually lived in Scarborough and used to take my TZR125 up onto the circuit fairly regularly. But you couldn't cane it. Other cars, dog walkers, Oliver etc. That day however, all those restrictions were gone. Now I'd always fancied myself as a bit of a racer. I was quick on the road. On an unrestricted track though, I was appalling. I was shitting myself every lap. Not only are there death inducing hairpins, but coming down the hill at a ton plus over Jefferies Jump, man I wanted to just cry, but I couldn't because my girlfriend was up on the hill watching. I learned there and then, that no, I am not a racer. In retrospect, the ill-timed joint five minutes before they called us to the start probably didn't help either. I'd even said to my girlfriend there's no way I can do this right now. She said I might never get the opportunity again and I would regret not doing it. Also I could just "take it steady". Yeah right, with fifty other egos with motorcycles around me. I held my own for three full laps on fear and adrenalin. On the fourth lap at Drury's hairpin, some madman on an XV535 custom stuffed me up the inside and I was like, I'm done. Let's just survive this. One day I might be able to recount the story for strangers on the internet. Thanks for bringing those memories back.

What an amazing place, and a well put-together video as well. Thanks Jon for showing us this! (The rock music over the lap at the end, kind of reminds me of what you got in those 90s "Clarkson on Cars" VHS videos!)
You talked about the telecommunications mast . But you were very close to Staxton Wold RAF radar station . Indeed you possibly might have been able to see it from where you were . It is the oldest still working radar station in the world. Also Scarborough boasts a GCHQ outpost on the Pickering road out of the town. Don’t tell a soul !
An FYI road racing on public roads used to take place at New Brighton on the Wirral, around the area known as the dips, including the A554. I believe the racing was stopped due to safety issues, however, the area is still used for Rally special stages. The organizing club was the Wirral 100 MotorClub, the now race at Anglesey and Oulton Park.
Wow, absolutely great, loved this. I grew up with this view everyday, we lived on the south cliff at the bottom of the hill here, my primary school was at the foot of the hill, I delivered newspapers all around here as a kid. Ridden up and down those hills for years and went to races as my dad did (he was a bellboy at one of the hotels and got tickets from riders, including Geoff Duke). Really great views from all around the circuit and a great circuit to watch at. Once we went and my dad had been in his friend's hotel bar the night before where Barry Sheene was staying and he told my dad he would do a wheelie for us if we waved, coming out of the mount hairpin we waved and he wheelies. We were made up, convinced he kept his word. Not sure if he saw my dad, but ever the showman, he couldn't help but entertain. Great memories. Thanks.
My Dad is from Scarborough so I was there on holiday staying with Grandparents every year in my childhood and have been to watch the racing a few times through the years plus driven around the mount circuit in various cars always sticking to the speed limit and never taking the racing line 😃 thank you for this video it’s lovely to know the history. My dad played rugby on the field as a school boy and he’s 81 now.

Two of my favourite geeky UA-cam channels in one show!
Lived in Hull all my life and have seen signs for Olivers mount when going to scarbella but never knew it had a race track! Have to take a jolly for a look now. Thanks John.
Lovely and different, I should try to go there one day
What an amazing place, and a well put-together video as well. Thanks Jon for showing us this! (The rock music over the lap at the end, kind of reminds me of what you got in those 90s "Clarkson on Cars" VHS videos!)
It’s the original Gran Turismo soundtrack from the Japanese version of the game
For ones searching the title of the song is: Moon Over The Castle
Love the GT4 theme. So many weeks of my life spent listening to that.
First I’ve ever heard of this. Thanks for sharing.👍
Excellent, I’d been there as a child but had forgotten all about it. What a super little road circuit it is!
Went there for Cock of the North for first time this year 2023. Loved it. Great day out, great racing. Will be back,
You talked about the telecommunications mast .
"a bit of an argument broke out"...golden!!! Classic British understatement.
The cross over episode I didn't know I needed.
It would be great to drive a go-kart on that track!
Great memories of the cafe owner coming out and shouting at us when we were flying round there on our 125's about 35 years ago..... Been back many times since and still have a good whizz round when it's quiet. There's a video somewhere on FB of me doing a wheelie over the finish line. 😇
Excellent use of Moon Over the Castle, the GT4 memories came flooding back!
This is .... and i dont say this lightly ..... one of the best videos ive ever seen about one of the most suprising and interesting things possible ..... im in awe
Scarbrough you say ? righty , a cunning plan
Take a trip, it's a great day out! Thanks for watching mate
@@AutoShenanigans payday ill get you a beer in 🙂
As someone who visits Scarborough a couple of times a month, I can’t believe I never knew this existed! So, thanks for this video, Jon! Also, that radio transmitter is essential as Scarborough town is in a black hole. Whatever radio station your car is tuned to, you will lose signal both in and out of the town!
You go to Scarborough a couple of times a month and you didn't know a race track existed on the hill? Presumably you dont know about the motorbike racing events that happen here. 4 race weekend meetings this year. Really cheap tickets. It got cancelled last year because of funding issues which is clear to see as nobody knows about it.
@@ped0000 True! We live not far away and this is all new information! I need to get out more. You’re talking to the guy who, many years ago in my defence, lost the beach while taking a short cut through the town centre! 😂😂😂😂
Oliver’s Mount has had a bit of an up down time recently. As a biker, it’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit, maybe I will this summer. Might do some helmet cam footage and post it up from a bikers perspective. 👍🏻
I drove round olivers mount years ago while working in Scarborough and I defly agree there's no where else in the UK like it,well worth a visit, love the content great video
I remember Oliver’s Mount before the speed limit. We would visit Scarborough ever few months in the early 60’s. For the first couple of years we rode the circuit late Saturday nights. After that it was round & round in cars.
Farm Bends did not exist at the time. They were installed to slow things down past the start/finish line & onto Mere Hairpin. Oliver’s Mount is also used for sidecar racing.
Sounds like you had a blast Saturday nights in the early 60s!!
@@miguelaguilera6601 Not particularly. It was just something you did. The main alternative seemed to be. Go to the local dancehall & avoid the. Are looking at my bird fights. Much preferred riding motorcycles.
Wicked, sweet, awesome.
Ah, what a mixture. Racing track and mobile phone mast. Heaven
Live not far away. My son used to play football matches in the grass area in the middle of the track. Once even when a race was taking place. Great video. Thanks for highlighting our bit of Yorkshire. All the best 🇬🇧.
one of the great tracks for the amateur racers as well as professional ones to ,atmosphere is brilliant on race weekends .Get yourselves there and experience it
Just got back from Scarborough, great track worth a visit 👍🏻
Hey, what a find! Been to Scarbs a few times back in the day and never knew. Now added to the bucket list. Thx again for a great presentation 👍🏿
Fantastic video John! I had no idea this place even existed, I'll definitely be there when the weather is good! Thank you for doing what you do ❤
Now there`s a thing, I had heard of Oliver`s Mount but never knew about the track. Thanks for showing us.
Love the music. I just Shazammed it and it says its from Gran Tourismo 4. If that's true this is such a laugh! Another great video, John. Keep 'em coming!
Amazing mate
Your speech in the end with music in the background was great
loved as a kid watching to motorbikes going round you could sit right next to the track in the grass
