Davidstow seems like an unlikely place for Formula 1 race events but after RAF Davidstow Moor closed, that's exactly what we got!
If like me, you enjoy motorsport, history and looking at pieces of tarmac... you'll love "Forgotten Race Tracks" where we take a look at some of the old and abandoned race tracks around England.
From Drag strips to Formula 1 circuits, in this short series, we'll be investigating what remains of Britain's motor racing history.

You pronounce it like david, sto
As a child I played in this airfield and lived next door to it and I’m sorry to tell you but you are mispronouncing its name you should be calling it David as in the name like David Bowie the way you pronounced it sounds more like Davith as in the only gay in the village from Little Britain
It seems I pronounce everything wrong... you'll get used to it :D Thanks for watching mate.
I heard david / davidstow, I live near liverpool so I'm used to working out dodgy accents 😊
Taught my son and daughter to drive up there, surface is awful but it was safe enough to teach them pulling away and clutch control 👍
There was someone learning when I visited. We don't get nice things like this around our way.
Remember driving my cousins Anglia in the early 80s around there. He was nuts and we drove down Rough Tor with me at night.
My Gpa did same for my Mum on Wetheringfield (Sudbury) af.
Where is Davidstow ?
End of David's foot.
wouldn't call that a hot lap but certainly one of the fastest in years!
When I drove around there it was full of sheep! Nice to see Davidstow get some love…
Great video as always mate, you will have to come up to crail in Fife for a shot on the old airfield/dragstrip
Cheers mate. Isn't Crail currently a track you can drive/hire?
@@AutoShenanigans yeah events are on most weekends from March till October like on the drag strip and the drifting ring.
in the 2000's rally events were held here.
Last rally held there was December 2000
Next time you're in Wales, you should visit former RAF Llandow, between Cardiff airport and RAF St. Athan. That too was a Coastal Command airbase during WW2, and during the cold war was a dispersal airbase for the V bombers. It was also the original proposed site for Cardiff Airport, which is now down the road along with the huge BA maintenance hangar. But I digress. Llandow is no longer active, but is now a racetrack of sorts and they have track days for performance cars which you can hire, or drive your own. They also hold other car-related events there at weekends but you need to check what's on.
I enjoyed that video, interesting stuff about the early days of F1. Shame about the weather though!
Learnt to drive on the remains of RAF Harrowbere irfield (near Yelverton , Devon) in the late 70s - would love to know how many of us learned the niceties of parking, reversing etc on what's left of the perimeter road?
Back in 1991 I went to the White Goddess Free Festival just down the road from there. I had no idea I was only a few miles away from a piece of British Motor Racing history. Damn.
you should come too Buckinghamshire there are lots of old airfields that were used as race tracks
I wasn't aware.. whats good in that area?
What's left in Bucks ¿?
@@suzyqualcast6269 Bovingdon airfield in hemel hemsted, Haddenham Airfield. I'm sure there are loads more
I suspect it's not entirely disused, going by the rather well-maintained windsock at 3:35 and onwards!
I only live in Plymouth so not that far from here going to have to check this out
Excellent video , thanks for your research. 2023 and bigears highway has more potholes than this long abandoned venue.
A good ol' full size pickup could do much better. You need something with more travel in the suspension. This is almost an off-road track.
I hope no Saabs were hurt in the making of this film!😁
The suspension took a bit of a beating :(
@@AutoShenanigans 😭
😁
Sounds like this track suffered similar problems to Darley Moor with the inclement weather. Darley is a bit more accessible and has faired better.
Terrible surfaces? Welcome to the A Roads of Ceredigion.
Spectacular place to visit came across it completely by accident few years ago 👍
"You are reversing"
Raf Dunholme was once used for racing.
Did you know davidstow cheese and cathedral city are the same but cathedral city is a quid cheaper?
Same cheese? I don't think so, I'm sure they tasted different, and Davidstow was much nicer!😋
Wasn't there a illegal rave here a year or 2 ago.
Great video. Davidstow.. David as in Goliath, not Ginola ! Reminds me of cringe making M&S advert few years back, that pronounced the cheese the same way but with french accent!!
It’s still raining since you left😂
Flew my first solo up there, and when the weather was crap we used to try and race round the old circuit in our cars. It's a common, so it was a case of swerving around goats and sheep a lot of the time as well as potholes, and the damned Doc Martin film crew once or twice😂
Good video. I think I'd heard that it was used for F1 before. I'm not far over the border in Devon and have been there a few times. There is an interesting Air museum nearby. They had a massive illegal Rave there a while ago, might have been last year, and it took months to clear up the Litter & Excrement.
Ooh, I went up there a few years ago whilst on holiday and it was just as foggy! I didn’t realise it had been a race track as well as an airfield!
nice video, another in the south west would be Oddicombe Hillclimb
Hi, good info.. is there a dedicated track or did it use the existing roads?
existing roads i think. Torbay motor club who used to run the event would be able to tell you for sure
Love your channel
Ain't this the top gear track
Im not sure it was, that was Dunsfold.
@@AutoShenanigans ok 😋 bring more content 👊🏽👌🏼👌🏼
I did a lap of the Monaco GP circuit in summer 2020 (on a Sunday in July in a rented diesel car) and it was just the same only with less risk of hitting a sheep.
I can see the similarities between rainy Cornwall and Monaco.
@@AutoShenanigansAbsolutely, I have actually travelled to Cornwall on a couple of occasions thinking it was Monaco and I spent a few hours looking for a Casino!
😢
Good work 👍
Thanks for watching!
