In terms of the price, I agree with your justification. It's the same reason why I bought a Model F77 from Model F Labs: you vote with your wallet. I not only wanted a re-programmable Model F, but I also wanted to support a small business that is making one of, if not the, most well built made-to-order keyboard I have ever seen. It's expensive, but it will last me a lifetime.

The layout would be ideal for me, if the alt keys and the split spacebars were switched. The way it is, it's just too dissimilar to a standard layout, I don't want to get used to something too different.
A minila kind of layout (ideally the new one) does a better compromise here, where you still have easily reachable modifier keys with the thumbs

  • @michaelmonstar4276

Ya, interesting keyboard, but I already don't like the bunch of conventions (that do make sense) they throw out the window, like the layout just being rather random and something they made up themselves. - Don't get me wrong, I appreciate people trying something new, that's what I'm like as well, but how do you put the Alt-keys in the middle for example?... I mean, I don't know about anyone else, but my left thumb is exactly there to hit Space all the time. - Do people really move their thumb inwards awkwardly like that?... I did notice that their keyboard currently has a 3-way split bar with no descriptions on them, so they've probably changed it according to feedback or something.
Also, the whole row of F-keys that aren't used a lot at all are still just a waste and can easily be layered under the number-keys. - But then also stuff like no nubs on the F and J keys... like, really?... Those are exactly to know where you are on the keyboard, which has been standardized a very long time ago. - Similarly, I feel that for compact keyboard the directional-keys should be layered under the IJKL-keys. Which some companies have done, but a lot still put them under WASD, which doesn't make sense for typing at all. That's a "gaming"-standard, which has nothing to do with typing. And I also don't agree with separate directional keys, which still make you have to move your hand to the bottom-right.
Then there's also the matter of "ortholinear", but that's probably something that will never be standardized or normalized, at least not in our lifetimes.
That said, I do appreciate what they're trying to do, and for not too much money. I mean, look at the keyboards that System76 makes, which seem less unique for more money, between 200 and 300 USD. - As for this one, I think you might be off just as well with something like the Sharkoon PureWriter, which is a lot more basic, but has a lot of value for the money with the same switches, albeit a choice between two versions, no hot-swapping (I think), and no reprogramming (again, I think), but that's also for well below 100 USD/EUR. - Though, still mechanical, with lighting, as well as a removable USB-C cable. - Also, how much effort you need to put into programming the MNT isn't really acceptable. I'd just go with the Ducky or Anne, which is probably considered very "basic", but they do make more sense in a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" kind of way.

I think the perfect Linux keyboard would be 5 Rows of Keys rather than a traditional 6 rows. This allows the typists to key their hands on home row almost all the time rather than constantly having to pick them up and move them away from "home row position". It could be possible to have a 5 Row 60% keyboard like that by using multiple "shifter" keys (ctrl, shift, alt, fn). The F1-F12 keys can be combined with the top row keys and activated by pressing the fn shifter key. HOWEVER, I HAVEN'T SEEN A SINGLE 60% KEYBOARD THAT ACTUALLY WORKS WELL WITH LINUX. MINE DOESN'T. DEVELOPERS NEED TO DO SOME SERIOUS WORK TO HELP LINUX AND VIM USERS KEEP THEIR HANDS ON HOME ROW, IF THEY WANT.

Very overrated, imo. At minimum I'd need something with QMK support, split, columnar stagger. If it checked all those boxes and also had topre switches I would consider it.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
