if you take out some batteries can it still be run as if you take ssome out then it could be totally airline safe and you coulkd still use it as you canm carry extra batteries seperate of devices in a protective case and then pop them back in later
Thinking of buying this thing literally just for the trackball because I hate having to use touchpads so much. That split spacebar doesn't look like something i'd want though, wish they had the option for just a standard spacebar.
If I remember correctly, you're talking one proprietary firmware for the memory controller and everything else is open. I don't know if any of the libre distros have ARM versions.

Great product but I wish they would not use Styrofoam packing peanuts. They are totally non recyclable. When I received my Framework laptop all the packaging was recyclable card and it arrived in good condition.

At 5:10 you say swap out individual battery cells. Please do not do that, those batteries are married. Introducing a fresh battery that will have a different internal resistance and other properties is how you get battery fires.

Futher, if a device like this kills a single cell faster than the rest in a group that's a danger sign that makes trying to swap out single cells an even wore idea. Now, that all being said, I know that's a big issue with normal lithium ion cells. Do you know specifically of battery matching issues with LiFePO4 cells?
Because "normal keyboards" (whichever layout you mean by that) were modeled after typewriters. Those layouts had constraints we simply don't have to deal with anymore, so in a sense all modern "normal keyboards" are skeuomorphs of typewriters. Even this keyboard is still a skeuomorph of typewriters because of it's horizontal stagger, which would _never_ become part of a modern digital keyboard design if the design started from scratch. This keyboard layout honestly doesn't go far enough, they should've, imo, made it ortholinear and made the function keys symmetric.
Acrylic... my 10+ old Thinkpad X301 is made of magnesium and carbon fiber reinforced plastic. Free software and hardware is important (I'd say crucial) but unless you people become more practical and less idealistic, this will remain a toy for pure entertainment with no social effect whatsoever.
I don't think that's a terribly helpful way of looking at things. Different tools are built for different purposes and different potential users, and *almost all* tools are designed for someone other than you personally.
System76 has laptops made out of premium materials and Intel CPUs if that’s what you want. The Pinebook Pro is made out of a magnesium alloy too, but it’s cheap so I doubt it has the durability of a business laptop.

Crude OS? Sway on Debian is S tier. The new mini does have an ortho keyboard though. Make sense in the 7" form factor where you're not going to fit a standard layout with decent sized keys.

That's one way to look at it, but I think it's entirely missing the point of this device. The DC input is a good example - it's specified to take variable voltage input and uses a very common connector. That means that if you have a 12V car battery and want to charge it, fabricating a new charging cable that's a couple of battery clips connected to a barrel jack doesn't just work, it's what the device designers intended you to do. If you were careful, you could also hook it directly to a solar panel. You're not required to want that. For many devices, I'd prefer to just have a USB-PD connector myself. But I'm really happy that this device exists, because for some use cases it's exactly the right thing. The designers mostly did a great job at building something that was otherwise missing in the world.
I love the MNT reform. It's the PC I wish I had as a kid. Can't wait to get one.

The trackball is a bit crunchy on mine. There's been some work on improving it, but I don't know what the status is on new units.
They changed the keyboard layout meanwhile. The space bar is still 2 individual keys, but there are no more non-space keys in-between.

I've been using it off and on since I got it, and I'm slowly getting used to it. It's mostly just the narrow right shift that screws me up now.
