Amazing tactile feel. Distinct mechanical acoustics. Unparalleled durability. The IBM Model M is likely the most influential keyboard ever- even if it’s NOT great for gaming. But how does a brand new Unicomp Classic compare?

I bought one of these for one of our accounting executives, he's about 55, and he lost his damn mind. Best gift I think I've ever given.
@Matt Insett must be nostalgic.
It is quality for typing: a lot of ppl prefer it as the 'real deal' too; it depends waht you like best irl
I'm a few years younger and that is what I learned to type and write programs on,. After a year or two, I can type in the pitch-black dark and not make a mistake because of the muscle memory from college. Nothing feels as good as a model-M. If there is ever a shooter in the office he can hide behind that keyboard.

I bought a buckling spring keyboard back ca. 2005 and had to stop using it because it was simply too damned noisy in the office. If you can type at ~100wpm the thing sounds like machine-gun fire. Fun for me; disastrous for everyone else.

The police came at my door when it arrived
If someone told me I couldn't bring in my Model M, I'd deliberately bring in something in a metal case with BOX Navy/Jade thick clicks for the next day.
Not really, but I would like to see the reactions.
@@Jrez What could possibly fit that description? I'm not entirely sure what "BOX Navy/Jade thick clicks" are, either. Could you explain that to me?
@@Thalanox Kailh is a manufacturer of keyboard key switches. The BOX Navy and BOX Jade versions are not only clicky switch types, they are designed to be very loud and tactile by the use of a thicker "clickbar" than on their BOX White switches, that makes a louder noise and is more force to overcome for the tactile feel. I believe they are some of the loudest switches you can buy. Clicky switches IMO sound best in big, heavy full-size keyboards. IBM's beam-springs probably would not sound as deep and "thocky" in a 60% board. However, a BOX Jade/Navy example: ua-cam.com/video/tgAzGrdqqXU/v-deo.html
What would fit that description is a custom keyboard like this, where each part is chosen independently. If anyone finds this topic interesting and wants to get into mechanical keyboards, I warn you it can be extremely expensive, avoid buying on impulse.
"catastrophically buckling compression column switch and actuator" has to be my favorite patent name of all time
Love it
I feel like it was initially intended to be a ''compression column switch and actuator'' when they were developing it, until they discovered a ''catastrophically buckling'' side effect in its design [which they had a liking to and just went with it]
"catastrophically buckling" seems to be a term in engineering, when you put so much load on a metal beam that it breaks. That kind of failure tends to happen very suddenly, and it can lead to chain reactions if it puts more load on other supporting structure. It was probably used in the patent because engineers reviewing the patent would be familiar with the term (although most patents were concerned with _avoiding_ that behavior) and would understand how the spring would yield to pressure.
It's technically _not_ a catastrophic case, because unlike a metal tube or beam, a spring doesn't take damage; it just snaps back upright when most of the load goes away. However, it happens just as suddenly, which is important for fast typists (and competitive gamers); if it did not, the moving parts would introduce some "lag" even before processing, network bandwidth, signal round-trip time etc. would apply. And by labeling it "catastrophic" they could differentiate between this one and other means of the term "buckling."
My fave is "bomb calorimeter" which is a heat measurement device used in chemistry. The "bomb" is a pressure container which is filled with a sample, which is then ignited. Like an explosive kind of bomb, the thick walls of the container can withstand substantial pressure. _Unlike_ the explosive kind, the pressure tends to build up within seconds or minutes, not within milliseconds, and the container is never breached. And the contents are usually flammable, but not explosive. There are quite some jokes about talk like "preparing the bomb" and variants which were taken as illegal acts by some uninitiated person nearby.

What i love about UA-cam is when you browsed high end gaming keyboard in the search engine then BAM Linus in Fancy ass suit explaining about Old IBM Mechanical Keyboard showed up in recommendation.
If you want good mechanical keyboards don't get gaming ones. They are super overpriced for what they offer. Aside from the logitech one that has very fast Bluetooth / wireless and seems sorta decent. You can buy and build absolutely fantastic keyboards for the rpive of a "high end" gaming keyboard. And completely costomize the feel, materials, switches etc. And nowadays they all have the gaming stuff (bright multicolour leds etc)
@@godofchaoskhorne5043 What are gaming keyboards actually worth? 75% of the price? 50%? 25?
@@NaudVanDalen Probably 75% . You can buy a keyboard like Anne Pro 2 and mod them to your likings (lube, foam , keycaps though im not sure if keycaps fit into the moddding category and more.) I managed to get a Model M a few years ago. It's a "third-gen" model from Lexmark in '93, but it does still have the buckling-spring switches and still feels and sounds great. I don't use it all that often, but I don't see myself ever getting rid of it.
I lived in Iowa City (or near it) for years.
Before the flood of 2008, the University of Iowa surplus store routinely had used Model M keyboards in stock.

Hi, Linus . . . This is the first of your videos I have seen. I somehow stumbled onto your channel from watching many videos on Mechanical Keyboards (specifically, DAS Keyboards, which I had first heard of from reading NY Bestselling author, Gregg Hurwitz's Orphan X series). I learned MANY new things from you in this video: the history of the IBM keyboard you featured (I used it for 9 years in one of my first jobs out of college in Dallas) and the name of the connector (PS2) for one of the old Compaq keyboards which I still own and have wanted to use with my Early 2011Apple MacBook Pro because I like the sound and tactile feel of a "standard" keyboard! (Now, I'll be able to purchase a PS2 to USE converter online!). THANK YOU for your channel -- I subscribed!

I know this might be buried, but I am writing this on a 2019 Unicomp Model M PC-122. I have ZERO complaints about this keyboard, it is built like a tank, the keycaps are printed slightly off-center but are sharp and well-constructed, it types like a dream, and Unicomp were excellent to work with. If you're concerned by what Linus said about the build-quality, note that these imperfections are pretty rare and Unicomp has stepped their game up a lot recently (and will be able to do so more if they receive more business; they're serious about their reputation and customer satisfaction). Do you want a modern, clean, USB-functional model M with modern layout and other tweaks and conveniences? Then fear not.
The Model M is alive and well.
If you think the unicomp M's are built like a tank, you should try a model F lol. the M's feel absolutey flimsy by comparison, and the M's are already well built to begin with, especially for a modern keyboard.
@@SirRobertDole2 Absolutely, but very few can compare with those beasts! To be clear, I don't think the Unicomps are as good as early Ms or Fs, but they're not trash, which is the main concern people have when they ask me about mine.
Because critics concluded (rightly) that they aren't as good as original Ms, that's been extrapolated to "Unicomp make cheap plastic tat" by some. That's not fair to Unicomp, I've had plenty of crap keyboards and theirs isn't on that list. I'm very happy to use my Unicomp, I honestly look forward to typing on it. Sad, I know, but still.

Good stuff. Back in the 80’s the IBM keyboard was my favorite. So tactical and satisfying when typing. As a professional writer I miss that keyboard.
I've wanted a Model M for YEARS, and my Unicomp finally arrived today, and so far, I love it!!!

@@catoflado4977 my shift key started sticking once in awhile for the past week or so, otherwise, I'm really happy with it!
@@nicekeyboardalan6972 its actually a common problem for the older tooled keysets from Unicomp to have molding imperfections. They have since updated their tooling to new molds. Part of the reason for this binding is the stabilizer design on the Model M, which is about the 3rd worst I have ever seen from a smoothness standpoint. They use an older fashioned method of an entirely seperate barrel with a special stabilizer insert that if it is slightly misaligned binds like hell. Lubrication helps a small amount and the upside of this is that with the right PCB you can add new layouts using the same barrel plate. Wire stabilized keys are much better, found on boards like certain Model F AT's, but have more limited flexibility with layouts.
@@nicekeyboardalan6972 well im jealous, i have a new model f kishsaver, and any beamspring board would be unobtainium for me. I like tiny keebs tho.

Back in the late 70s early 80s the Z80 Chromatics keyboard was one of my favorites. I also like the keyboards that came with Symbolics machines.
There's something about the keypress feel and sound on these old things that is just super satisfying. It's like a little clack noise that says "Your keypress was registered" after you press the key all the way down. I'm sure it's super annoying to anyone else in the room, but I love that feel and sound. New keyboards just don't feel the same. I haven't used one since I was in primary school, but I do miss that feedback. If you have a dedicated office or room that is noise-isolated, this type of keyboard is so satisfying to type on when you're typing out actual papers/documents. I can't imagine using it for anything else, though.
I love my model M. I built a custom programmable controller for it.. I really should turn that into a video. I got stuck on trying to software-enable n-key roll over without modifying the plastic membranes.. (I got very, very close! :D)

I actually used some of the weird variations, but the most common variation was the number of function keys. The control and "Windows" keys often existed with other names. PC keyboards actually had command keys at one point instead of control. The other key was often called meta. At times, there were all three, but this made the shift and return keys smaller.

When I started my career I worked with older IBM AS400 systems and I still have a couple of the AS400 terminals from back then at my workplace, late 80's stuff. The keyboards are really heavy and seem like they'll last another 100 years. The terminal screens are also built like tanks, I would say they weigh at least 20kg's. The ones I have still work perfectly too and one of them is still in regular use. Amazing quality. IBM also had DECADES of electrical keyboard experience in their typewriters to start with.
Plus their experience with the various Model F keyboards for the PC and XT (and I think the original 84 key AT keyboard was a Model F).
The 101 "Expanded AT" keyboard that was the first Model M for PCs, and the workstation/terminal variants that preceded it, are VERY SIMILAR in layout, except for the function keys move and added "middle" section, to that 84 key AT keyboard layout (and that 101 "Expanded AT" keyboard ALSO HAD A 5 PIN DIN CONNECTOR).
I ordered a new Model M from Unicomp 10 days ago and I absolutely love it! 😍 The quality issues that were described here and in other videos & posts are gone. Unicomp fixed those.
I ordered mine with the Ultra Classic chassis since it's slightly smaller in width. I also ordered it with Windows 95 keys. Typing on it feels so much different than on a standard rubber dome or Cherry keyboard. It really is something unique and lots of fun to work with! :) Of course it's slightly different than the originals from the 80's and 90's but Unicomp had to modify their model M to stay competitive - that's a factor that shouldn't be forgotten.
@RTobi-(Rummeltobi):
THANKYOU! :-)
Seriously thankyou :-) . I was freaking-out about ordering a Unicomp--Model-M because of the issues described here [in this UA-cam-video], but seeing as how you ordered one (and RECENTLY i might add[, (based on the age of your post)]), I'm thinking I'll order one :-) .
THANKYOU! :-)
P.S. I used a second-generation IBM Model-M (one of my universities had *REALLY*-OLD computers in the computer-lab inside the library (the computer-lab in the library was a separate-room from the room that had all the books & study-desks, by the way)). (Yeah I know: lucky me :-) ). (It was typing-heaven to a person-who-types-without-looking-down-at-the-keyboard).
Unfortunately when the university had a "give-away all the old equipment"-day those keyboards were the FIRST to disappear (even though I arrived there EXTRA-early, WAYYY-before they opened-the-room where all the old stuff [they were giving[-]away] was).
I was trying-to--find-out what were the "Cherry-MX"-switches that are the CLOSEST-THING to those 2nd-Generation--IBM-Model-M "Buckling-Spring Switches", (but I dunno if that would be the Cherry-MX "Brown" or the Cherry-MX "Blue" switches).
Any advice and/or tips and/or pointers?
@@reoencarcelado5904 I thought I replied to this comment but I may have closed the tab before hitting the reply button.
I'll post a link to another video in my 2nd reply here. That video also confirms that the quality issues are gone.
Lucky that you could use these at your university but it sucks that you didn't get one when they were giving them away. Although I do wonder why the university would give those wonderful keyboards away. Especially why they would keep those away for free? Those are worth a fortune.
I did never own a keyboard with Cherry switches but I did type on some keyboards that have these switches. I don't think that Cherry switches come close to the buckling springs. Personally I'd go for the Unicomp.
A few other things that I love about the Unicomp Model M:

I started working in the IT field in 1988, and to this day I have kept and am still using the same Model M 1391401 keyboard I used with my work PC back then, on my current i5 processor PC at home - I will never give it up! I have an extra long PS/2 cable attached to it, and my mother board still has one PS/2 port on it - but I also have an active USB converter for it whenever I upgrade my motherboard in the future. When I type I have a habit of really pounding on the keyboard keys, yet this keyboard has withstood the abuse and held up perfectly for these past 30 years. I do have 4 or 5 spare Model M keyboards at home I salvaged from a couple pallets full of Model M's headed for the trash at one company I worked at, but I've never had to get a single one out of storage to replace this one!
4 or 5 Model Ms? My God, you have enough Model Ms to last you until the end of time. That's too many.
I feel like bragging, but see no point, so I will stuck it as a reply here. Nothing compares to 2 kg heavy IBM thing which produces this exact letters. I have it since my pentium 1. No dead key, just amazing feel and speed.
Now I'm going to local ads to try to hijack spare one from someone who doesn't know it's value.
When those keyboards have a million key presses on them they are just starting to get broken in. I don't know of any type M that wore out, all I seen die were from water or other physical damage. I know it isn't exactly the same but I do have a Unicomp from 2005 still going strong with no issues. It is close enough to the original for me. I also game with it and have no issues, though I am not at the professional or competition level.
I have also kept all of my model M keyboards but I only have two of them. Everyone loved looking at my keyboard while every other piece of hardware was top of the line on my PC. I will never buy a keyboard.

I'm now 19 and I used these old white key-boards when I was young. Such nostalgia.
They gave us the Thinkpad and the Model M... Man, what a powerhouse.
They also gave us the "PC". Who choose to build an open architecture around an Intel 8086 CPU, and off-the-self parts, connecting everything to a few simple system buses, and tying all of that with a little program in ROM called the Basic Input and Output System (BIOS), and calling the result the "Personal Computer" ? Well, it's ever onward IBM!
IBM computers put a man on the moon and did computations to invent the A-bomb.
if you plug a Model M into a Thinkpad running OS/2 you add 1% to IBM's stock price

It's kinda awful that Lenovo took over the shazz
WOW. You actually made a video about old keyboards very interesting to watch with great production quality. Great vid LTT.
Lol, great video, really wish I took all the Model M's home with me from IBM Poughkeepsie, when they were being "retired", literally boxes and boxes of them.
Nice! Filco Majestouch - my current keyboard for several years. Just watching after seeing your video on the Compaq Presario laptop that I also had (with the wireless IR data transfer).
It’s strange seeing Linus talk about classic computing topics. Normally LGR, the 8 bit guy, and nostalgia nerd are what come to mind when I think of the topic.
It would have been funny if they went to LGR's studio to do a combi
Something tells me that linus would make a good low budget steve jobs
Robert Rosenberger that’s what I thought he was going for tbh
Ricardo Santos I think that’s quite the exaggeration, but there’s no doubt that engineers seldom get the credit they deserve. There are comments above about how much progress IBM made for computing, but no one knows what teams did what, and which of the same faces were involved. It’s always some singular entity that gets the credit, even though there are many people involved.
you mean Billy Maze?
@Ricardo Santos all hail Woz, Apple's best Steve
I have this keyboard. It's great. I have a variety of mechanical keyboards with Cherry Brown and Cherry Blue switches. I sometimes switch between them. But for straight typing, I prefer the Unicomp buckling spring.
I am old enough to remember using Model M keyboards. Miss them. Currently have a DAS keyboard close and not so close
"more cheaper". This video lost all sophistication it was going for as soon as he said that lol

I read this as soon as he said it XD
Nah, it got MORE sophistication! Lol
Geralt go back to Kaer Morhen.
It got me too.
The best video is Max last video. We will miss you Max!
Yeah I miss the feel of those old keyboards, really nice to type on and built like a tank.
I have Steelseries 6GV2. It's a tank, feels very spartan and heavy. The only thing is that switches are only MX blacks. I don't really feel that they are better than even cheap rubber domes, be it typing or gaming. It doesn't look modern, some say it's boring, I would say it's classic. In only they offered more switch options, it could be next model M.
F
Honestly? I prefer cherry MX by a lot. They are simply the better mechanical keyboards imho, especially compared the the Lexmark trash.
Wait, what do you mean Max's last video ?
If you watch the Wan Show you would have seen it

I like how you showed that dell alps keyboard. Alps switches deserver more spotlight as they were pretty good also.
I have a few of the 2nd generation model M's in the original boxes, in my garage. They have been sitting in there for a couple decades.
I have been waiting for the right LTT video to post this comment on.
This is the one.
Linus, you continue to surprise us. The team that you have assembled at Linus Media Group has proven over and over again that tech videos can be more than just a person, a device, and a camera. Each video has a production quality that is of the highest measure, and it pays off. Your team has found harmony between abstract creativity AND clarity. What is the result of this?
*Easily digestible information, mixed with genuine entertainment.*
Your channel has a REAL personality. Each video is like meeting a new person-my theory is that you provide your employees with enough creative freedom to add their own flare. You have an obvious respect for the creative professionals that you employ, and I truly admire that.
Linus, you will forever be the pinnacle of Tech Videos for me. Please, continue providing us with unique content, as I stare at my home feed, waiting for a new LTT video to appear.

You should be higher up.
Unfortunately people drop more likes on 'Who's watching this in 20XX" and "Awesome!" crap than such well-structured praise.
Cringe
Voffman what is so cringy?
*Linus talks about Model M*
Well, there goes the price of these keyboards.
ahahaha the price has been gone for a while now... occasionally you can find good deals and clean them up a bit like I did but yeahhh. I really want to find a M13 or a Space Saver Model M but.. Those ones are just outrageous
I did most my CAD training in CADAM on IBM 8050 terminals (in the late 90s, a good decade after IBM stopped making them), with those amazing terminal versions of the model M with the steel backplate. That's where I fell in love with them, and it honestly isn't possible to find a modern keyboard that comes close to the same experience
There's Unicomp
When I was young, I got to take some classes for kids at the local college. They had these hooked up to green screen terminals and the typing experience was absolute joy. Nothing comes anywhere close.
Well done max... Your shooting and use of props is great!

The ORIGINAL run of the IBM "101 Enhanced" keyboard layout was 5 Pin DIN, as used on the IBM AT.
They didn't get PS/2 connectors for a couple-three years when IBM released the later PS/2 line.
Those AT-connector keyboards are hard to find today, since that connector has been out use on new machines for 3+ decades.
Tactile feedback... omg I had this back in the day and I still remember how it felt to type on it
There is a reason why LTT has almost 10 million subs. The love and production value of the videos are just amazing. High Quality content on UA-cam is rare nowadays. But LTT is in the top 5 %. Please keep up the great work you all do! Cheers from Germany.
LeBawsski Gaming Late reply but thats because they have an entire team dedicated to getting those videos out and making sure its juicy enough for us content consumers to watch
Doesn’t change the fact he makes good videos
Plus this one video was the last project by a former LTT employee called "Max" and they poured their heart and soul into this apparently

This was a very nice episode to watch. Stylish is the word. Congratulations!
got mine a while back, and I loved it so much. it was great
6:30 is misleading. Lexmark kept making buckling spring Model Ms throughout the entire time they had the contract. They even expanded the line and made multiple different versions of the Model M (I have one with a split spacebar). They did make a cheaper version of the Model M that used rubberdomes but it's only 1 of many models they manufactured. The model he shows at this part in the video is in fact a rubberdome. MOST Lexmark Model Ms are buckling springs not rubberdomes.
6:55 Lexmark didn't drop their keyboard division by choice. they lost their contract with IBM because IBM couldn't compete with the cheaper prices of other keyboards. lexmark only manufactured the keyboards for IBM. they had no say in the matter.
I think that the rubber dome variant was specifically created for quieter environments. It may even have been called the quiet option.
Linus reviewing new ThinkPads, restoring old ones and talking about IBM keyboards? What a time to be alive!
Excellent production values! I remember the IBM keyboard, and thought they had a switch on the bottom that turned clicky on and off. I was in Explorers in the early 80's and we worked on the IBM mainframe terminals at Mellon bank in Pittsburgh, so that may be what I am thinking of.
You are talking about the beam spring which was a much older keyboard. They had a solenoid built in to make the clicking sound louder which you could switch on and off.
It was in every office around the world. It was tough as hell and had great key travel. Dell had one similar to it in around 2004
more stuff like this please :)
one of the people who worked on this video with linus left LTT recently sadly
No one else found this boring but me? I feel awkward.
This was Max's last vid
yeah this was a good mix of tech tip/ history lesson
Jan Ryan yeah awkward for you for sure
-"and, don't yellow with age." keyboard is yellowish by default anyways.
Than you need glasses lol. They are beige,
they are baidge
random zanakluar LMAO, “baidge”
@@thundereagle4130 - "Beige", aka, "yellowish white".
@@salembeats Where did you come up with that? If it were yellowish white, it'd be referred to as off-white or light (or pale) yellow. Read below, if you'd like to learn a little.
An accurate description:
"A light grayish brown or yellowish brown to grayish yellow".
To be honest, yellowish brown would be closest, at least in most cases. There are enough color names that relate to very similar colors, that naming the color of what you're looking at, without resorting to an accurately printed color chart, becomes a bit of a guessing game...that is, guessing what color something is supposed to be. Partly due, I'd say, to the variations in people's ability to see and differentiate colors. I'm one of the lucky ones...I'm an artist with "perfect color vision".
I have a Black Unicomp USB buckling keyboard I snagged cheap at a computer swap meet. One of my favorites!!
Very interesting video good job man :D
Well done Max! Hope to have you back one day!! :-D
And here, I have a Model M that looks NOTHING like any shown here. It has the DIN cable, non-removable, but the indicator lights. It has full F1-F24 keys in 2 rows and 2 columns of macro keys to the left of the main keys as well. Don't have the room to make it my daily driver right now, but it's niiiice.
This was a fantastic video, btw.
That sounds like a 5250 keyboard. I used to use those attached to dumb (5250) green screen terminals connected to the IBM System36 and IBM AS/400 (now IBM/i). A keyboard made to be thrown down on the desk, or slapped around the PHB's head, in frustration and still work, lol. Built like a tank and a unique typing feel; although, that said, I've found the cherry MX blue (I think, thats what mine are) are damn close in feel noise and typing effort but I do miss the dual row of function keys as I still work on IBM/i using a 5250 emulator.
I *_think_* there were some "Model M for terminals" (aka Model M-122) keyboards too, ie. they were used on things like very complex cash registers in airports, or programmable robot work machines in factories ... sounds like what he has.
Alternatively, it's a Model F-122
Congratulations on 100k!
I had that model at work once, its the 'server' version, also with an additional 5th key between the arrow keys. My colleagues where all like 'wtf is that thing' and I just 'try typing on it'. clickety-clack
When you connect that to a modern windows pc what do the F13-f24 keys do?
I love low profile keyboards, I fell in love with them when I got my first notebook. But I still remember the model M with a smile, they were tryuly awesome.
idk how you do it, but you're the guy I don't blame for ads
I feel like Linus had a lot of fun making this video.
I think that's what makes it enjoyable to watch.
And he didn't drop anything either. The quality was definitely there. But that ending, with the nipples... xD
Finally an extremely interesting and well produced LTT video. It's been a while.
Not to mention it's one of the few that isn't straight up clickbait.
Too bad the one who produced this actually quit her job.
Farewell Max :(
It feels like completely out of touch for me, since I'm used to his more "casual" made videos.
Alexander Raptakis I found it boring.
