Awesome video! I just wanted to point something out since a lot of people in the comments are saying something along the lines of "Why would you pay money for a font," when typefaces really take a ton of work by the designer to be read well, give certain feelings, and suit a certain medium well (type is often designed for specific mediums like books or display). Every typeface has a designer behind it, and I feel those designers and their work are often taken for granted. There is nothing wrong with supporting type designers that do really great work!

The odd shape of the characters makes the text look like a blob of pixels in a sea of darkness. Good for short texts, not for structured code. I like my Liberation Sans Mono font. A little hard on the eyes, perhaps a little old fashioned looking, but it makes my code look like code.

MonoLisa does look great (although I've never been a huge fan of the cursive glyphs in italicized text), but for $200 (or even $50 for the Personal license) it is quite a steep price for many. Though, I can totally get it's worth for some to invest in something you're going to have to look at for hours end every day, especially if it's part of your job-and even better if you get it as a gift. This level of care to the coding environment is surprisingly wholesome. I must admit, there was zero chance I would have entertained the idea of a comic sans monospace font, but those arguments made at least make me understand why the font exists. Its interesting, I have adhd, and it's the minimalistic / clean lines of traditional monospace fonts that feel clean and simple to me.
I recommend trying out Go Mono, which is my current favourite font (i know no one cares:)). I use it in IDE and terminal. it has no mirrored fonts, looks very pleasant and it is very easy to read imo.
My favorite monospace font is Fantasque Sans Mono, because it's legible and looks great but isn't as strict and boringly straight as most other monospace fonts. It looks a little bit playful. Now seeing this, it's got a very similar quality only even more pronounced. So I think I might unironically like this! Definitely checking out the demo, and I recommend everyone else here to try Fantasque Sans Mono as well - it's great (imo)!
I bought Dank Mono a while back, and patched it with nerd fonts. It definitely gives a premium feel when programming with it! This one looks relaly cool as well, I'll definitely have to check it out.
"Příliš žluťoučký kůň úpěl ďábelské ódy" 😭😆 that one got me xD it makes literally no sense but for some reason it made me laugh that he actually used Czech language for this example to show the missing font for those characters xdd. Although there's absence of ř what a shame xdd
The greek one translates as: "the sfouggaras( old profession which is people who went diving into the sea to search and harvest natural sponges, nowadays it isn't that common since it is very dangerous and is known to create health issues to people doing it) from kalymnos (greek island) whispered that he will dive without hesitation." It is just so random and I don't know where he found it
fun fact: at 2:36, the text under "diacritics and special symbols" means "in the lowlands could eat truffles horse be dog" in Polish as a Polish person I find it hilarious lmao
By the way.. When I look at Monaco it really reminds me of Comic Sans family although being "cleaner" it still has a bit of a 'handwriting' vibe to it. By the way to make it render smooth in JetBrains i had to change the following from "Subpixel" to Grayscale: Settings > Appearance & Behavior > Appearance > Antialiasing > Editor: Grayscale
Comic Sans is not ugly. It's overused, and inappropriately used, and was probably developed on one drunken afternoon, and was developed at a time when it was cool to hate Microsoft, but it's not ugly. Also, Consolas was hands-down the best "serious" monospace font in the era of low DPI monitors on Windows.
The thing about irregular fonts in particular being more readable for dyslexic people is a widely propagated myth. There's research specifically showing OpenDyslexic isn't any easier to read for people with dyslexia than Arial. While certain fonts are more readable, there's nothing that makes a font more readable specifically for people with dyslexia. What makes fonts more readable for those who have dyslexia are exact same things that make it more readable for everyone else. And one thing is way more important for readability than the actual shape of the letters, and that is font size. If you want text to be readable, changing the font helps very little, while making it bigger makes all the difference. In other words, if you want readable text, just make it big.
You are completely correct. Whats even more interesting is that the studies cited by OpenDyslexic that are intended to look like they are supporting the font actually are counter to them. They provide no benefit at all. "Heavier line thickness at the bottom of most characters intended to better anchor letters" is pseudo-science bullshit.
This video made me switch to Comic Mono as my terminal font. Comic Code may be prettier, but a paid font was a bit too much. In general I kinda like the cartoonish comic sans look of both of them.
I ........ am stunned. Ive been coding for 30+ yrs and not once have i ever rly stoppled to question whatever default font comes along for the ride beyond making sure its monospace. I honestly dont think I can even begin to grasp the concept of a font making you feel ... anything .. let alone "comfy and warm". Clearly Im broken and soulless lol.
Shiiiit Wolfgang you're making me wanna buy a font. I gotta admit it *does* hit different and looks, as you say, very comfy. Hmmm. Gonna have to try it out for myself.
When he showed the comparison of some actual code i really felt what he was saying. One looks smooth, lively, like something you wanna do. The other feels cold, boring, like it's work.
Holy crap, I can scan read that code! Normal writing I can glance at and speed read but I can't with most code even though I know to just read the structure since variable names are functionally irrelevant.... this I could read at a glance! Definitely going to have to look at buying this font!
jesus christ one of the sites you can buy this on is skeevy as hell one of their terms is you have to give them (or anyone they're selling on behalf of) full access to any system you use the font on, unless you're able to provide sufficient logs of when and where you installed it if you say no or otherwise violate the agreement, you also lose rights to any and all fonts you got from them

I must admit, there was zero chance I would have entertained the idea of a comic sans monospace font, but those arguments made at least make me understand why the font exists.
Its interesting, I have adhd, and it's the minimalistic / clean lines of traditional monospace fonts that feel clean and simple to me.
"Man defends his unnecessary purchase for 6 minutes straight"
That's crazy.
I love it!
Thank you for making me aware of this font.
I recommend trying out Go Mono, which is my current favourite font (i know no one cares:)). I use it in IDE and terminal. it has no mirrored fonts, looks very pleasant and it is very easy to read imo.
I love Go Mono! Especially on hi rez screens. On low rez screens I still prefer Hack Nerd Font.
It actually looks really nice
"Příliš žluťoučký kůň úpěl ďábelské ódy" 😭😆 that one got me xD it makes literally no sense but for some reason it made me laugh that he actually used Czech language for this example to show the missing font for those characters xdd. Although there's absence of ř what a shame xdd
The greek one translates as: "the sfouggaras( old profession which is people who went diving into the sea to search and harvest natural sponges, nowadays it isn't that common since it is very dangerous and is known to create health issues to people doing it) from kalymnos (greek island) whispered that he will dive without hesitation." It is just so random and I don't know where he found it
This video made me entirely dyslexic, and I only watched half of it!
fun fact: at 2:36, the text under "diacritics and special symbols" means "in the lowlands could eat truffles horse be dog" in Polish
as a Polish person I find it hilarious lmao
fun fact: the text in cyrillic is similar to "Brey s geon mich strange gate in cftash park" which doesn't make sense in any language
I'm very glad I don't have dyslexia; if I had to use any comic inspired font I'd gouge my eyes out
I want my 6.08 minutes back. I mean NOW!!!
I'm fortunate that JetBrains Mono is my all time favorite font, cause i would definitely buy one if I really liked it
By the way.. When I look at Monaco it really reminds me of Comic Sans family although being "cleaner" it still has a bit of a 'handwriting' vibe to it.
By the way to make it render smooth in JetBrains i had to change the following from "Subpixel" to Grayscale:
Settings > Appearance & Behavior > Appearance > Antialiasing > Editor: Grayscale
I've been using Comic Mono since I first saw this video a long while ago. Making Comic Sans monospace really makes it beautiful somehow...
I expected this to be a UA-cam short where you say, “Because I like it.”
I learnt something new from this video.😊
Shiiiit Wolfgang you're making me wanna buy a font. I gotta admit it *does* hit different and looks, as you say, very comfy. Hmmm. Gonna have to try it out for myself.
When he showed the comparison of some actual code i really felt what he was saying.
One looks smooth, lively, like something you wanna do. The other feels cold, boring, like it's work.
Thanks for this! I just bought the font myself.
Holy crap, I can scan read that code! Normal writing I can glance at and speed read but I can't with most code even though I know to just read the structure since variable names are functionally irrelevant.... this I could read at a glance! Definitely going to have to look at buying this font!
I can't believe I'm actually considering it, despite my hatred of Comic Sans.
Nice video Wolfgang!
Hey! Comic Code actually looks good! Well uhh, guess I'll buy it now!
I've been a Menlo / Liberation Mono guy from the outset, but this is really tempting.
1000iq moment here: Buy a $35 font and talk just talk about it in a video and get all the money back and more
This font looks VERY similar to the Kingdom Hearts Unchained dialogue font, which looks very comfy and cozy. Good font, good video.
I'm not even coding but this changes my dyslexic life for script writing
jesus christ one of the sites you can buy this on is skeevy as hell
one of their terms is you have to give them (or anyone they're selling on behalf of) full access to any system you use the font on, unless you're able to provide sufficient logs of when and where you installed it
if you say no or otherwise violate the agreement, you also lose rights to any and all fonts you got from them
