I have a pink label DD-3 from the early '90s, it sounds warmer than modern digital ones but not as mushy as an analog one, it's somewhere in the middle, warm but clear.
My trusty old DD-20 with the preset switch just set to alternate between long and short on the analog setting. And if I need a different sound, it’s so easy to reach down and adjust in a few seconds. The Tone knob being right front and center is the secret sauce… you can put any setting right in the sweet spot of the mix.
Another feature: you can configure the stereo output options (ping-pong, parallel, or wide) by connecting a cable to the "A" input (nothing else plugged in), then hold down the footswitch and plug a cable into the "B" input and the LED turns orange. Then use the Mode knob to pick the output mode (LOOP = Ping-pong, ANALOG = Wide, STANDARD = parallel).
Good stuff as always! TWO other nuggets/features not discussed: 1. [CARRYOVER] switch - This selects whether the delay sound remains (ON) or does not remain (OFF) when you turn off the effect. 2. If a footswitch (sold separately: FS-5U, FS-6, FS-7) is connected to the TEMPO/EXP jack, you can use the TWIST function which creates an aggressive sense of rotation.
'They always work' - tell that to the DD7s out there with select switches/pots that have a mind of their own. Had one that would randomly change settings all the time. Rip DD7
The DD-8 on Warm mode running in the fx loop is just great for dirty sounds. It mimics the older "less HiFi" DD-2 sounds and takes out some unwated harsh highend. I never found any use for most of the other modes. Mod is also cool but lacks a bit of depth. I prefer the DD-7 for modulated sounds because the modulation is much deeper. What most people overlook are the different input, ouput and expression setups you can use. Thererfore I ways suggest that you read the manual and learn what input/output configs you can run with this pedal. Overall I think the DD-8 is the best allrounder from Boss, because you can get all the DD-2 DD-3 and DM-2 sounds, but with flexibility of a newer DD pedal.
Hi Leon, thanks for the great review. FYI there are panning and wide stereo settings in DD-8. It's not in the owner's manual, but it's in the reference manual.
Thanks to this demo I bought a dd-8. Together with the dm-2w it’s inspiring! There’s something unique and pre-ampy about the dm-2w. The dd-8 is its perfect companion (unlike some other, even very good digital delay pedals). It just works 🎉.
Sounds like the brought the magic back for the Reverse delay that many of us could only find in the DD-5. Thanks for the quick play through of this pedal!
There was a 2-3 month period where I tried every chorus, flanger and phaser pedal I could lay my hands on, looking for a specific sound. Wasn't happy with their rhythmic pulsating, even at the most subtle settings. Eventually determined what I wanted was just the slightly out-of-phase sound of a really short delay with no repeats, acting as a fixed EQ filter, not unlike a cocked wah. So now a Boss DD is my go-to when I want cool, crisp 'Scandinavian' cleans.
Are you a hobby guitarist playing in your bedroom? Listen here - you don't need this. It has features you will use once and then forget about them. I bought It and now I wish I just took dd-3 or even something more simpler. The difference between delay types (analog, warm, standard...) is so nuanced. I have an old roland cube 30 that has a simple delay fx and dd-8 is nothing special in terms of delay "quality". Yes, you get mix, feedback and time knobs but it only complicates things. Do you really need them for having fun? After having a regret moment I decided to buy a chorus. I almost bought a Boss Super Chorus but changed my mind and went for Small Clone - one knob. I'm super happy with it. Simplicity is the way to go :)
I’ve just sold my super cheap delay which settings were super subtle as I used it as a second reverb. I’m considering buying a better delay but I have your same opinion as unless you play with delay all the time you’ll end up not using it much like for the other effects.
I use one of these for smaller gigs where Direct to FOH isn’t an option and I needs small pedalboard. I wish the subdivisions had a slide switch rather than having to power off the pedal and remember the way to change them during a sound check. Been looking at the DL4mkii and the DD200 or 500 but those don’t seem to offer much more than this packed DD8. It also saves precious space on my pedalboard and makes fly gigs easier. Great video Leon Todd! Cheers from the Carolinas.
For everyone reading this - There is absolutely a stereo panning (ping-pong) and widener setting on this pedal! You have to manually set it as per the manual instructions. It is glorious in stereo and the sole reason I upgraded from the DD-6.
I keep meaning to pick up a DD-3 just for the Hold effect a la Graham Coxon on On Your Own from Blur. Doesn’t hurt that almost all the DD series are Swiss Army knives of delay. Edit: Looks like the 8 does it too! Nice to know.
I have the DD3 on my board as a set it and forget it type delay and also run a NEMESIS Delay for certain songs. Sometime even mixing both delays. It can really sound beautiful doubling those two pedal with the right settings. I do want to get the DD8 someday. It sounds killer here. You always give great reviews and use pedals well. So I can trust your judgment on pedals and other equipment. Thanks for posting!
First pedal I ever bought was the Boss DD-2, and I've loved their delays ever since. This sounds like a worthy new iteration. Shines when you hit it with filth.
Very Cool. Thankyou. Keep looking out for a Boss delay on Used market. Just have a Donner Echo Square, A Cuvave Analog delay and a Behringer Vintage Delay. All are awesome, and love the sounds I can get from them. I use the Cuvave and the Behringer in a Dual set up and am Amazed at the awesome Delay tones that can be achieved. The Donner Echo Square gives lots of options and just Rocks by it self. One day I will find a Boss delay, lol. Cheers
I've had a DD20 for years. I also had an RE20 but took up too much space and DD20 can emulate it. I do like stacked delay so now have a NUX Tape Core Deluxe which is just as good as the RE20 but less than half the space!
@@LeonTodd wow the song is awesome as well as the melody! But I would bet to cut my fingernails that i heard it somewhere else as well, some kind of Brett Garsed/Jeff Kollmann/Marty Friedman song. Anyway, super mixolydian melody :)
Boss does do good work.. I love their stuff.. Amps, effects, multi effects, etc.. Delays are great especially when you use reverb with them or two delays! Thanks to you I know how to use two of them in a loop now! Thank you for that brother! I like the clean 80's delays, but man, the dirt and delay is where it's at.. ! :=p I've got to get a ducking delay and I think you said I should get a TC electronic delay that has the rack effect in it.. 22 something? Thanks brother.. You rock.. Oh, I read EVH used two delays in front of his original marshall because it didn't have a loop or I saw that on a video, and that this is how he got a ducking type delay? I wonder if it's true? Anyway, great video sir and that delay does sound stellar.. The warm mode does sound killer man! Just killer.. Love it.. Thanks brother.. Always good stuff on this channel and it's most appreciated sir! Tim
I have simplified everything so I have zero pedals. I put my BOSS GT-1 into the effects loop of my Katana MKII-100, with a PRS SE Custom 24 or Ibanez RG (both lefty). That's all I need as I just really play in my man-cave these days. I love your facial expressions... it's like you had multiple delay-gasms here. 😃
i was waiting for this video with great anticipation since: a) i love your demons specifically b) i’ve been interested in adding this to my setup as a way to get a bit of a different lead sound over my songs with more textural stuff so i was very interested in the Shimmer and Reverse setting specifically. Satisfied. Definitely grabbing one.
If you record a loop and switch to a delay mode, will the loop continue to play? I know you can only overdub in the loop mode but can you record a backing track and then switch to a delay mode to solo over the backing track you created or when you switch modes does the loop stop playing? Hope this isn't a silly question. Thanks,
Great demo Leon 👍 just picked up the MXR Carbon Copy for Metal lead work… had to go with that one cause Brandon Ellis uses for his lead work 🤘🔥🤘 Gotta get my hands on this DD8 … used to have the DD7 but sold it a while back 😢 Any recommendations on a Reverb for metal lead stuff ? Thinking about Boss RV6 ! Cheers 🍻
Oh I wanted to ask if you've gigged the DGT yet? If so, are the pickups hotter in it than in your PRS single cut ? Just wondering.. Thanks brother and sorry for the questions.. I know you're busy! Tim
Funnily enough not yet! Took my Custom 24 over to Melbourne and then just been doing acoustic duo gigs since then. Got one in 2 weeks so looking forward to gigging it then!
@@LeonTodd Ah.. Interesting.. I bet it will rock.. What a nice guitar man.. Makes me want to get one! Great sounding axe. BOSS DD roll call - what are you using? DD-2, 3, 5, 6, 7 , 8, 20, 200 or 500?

DD-3T, I just picked it up, as I wasn't a fan of the bypass tone suck of the older DD-3 I have kicking around.
@@Supergrunged Yeah, it has a certain "sound", so I bought a TC Flashback which is more neutral sounding and it has an analog pass-through.
Another feature: you can configure the stereo output options (ping-pong, parallel, or wide) by connecting a cable to the "A" input (nothing else plugged in), then hold down the footswitch and plug a cable into the "B" input and the LED turns orange. That sounds killer…. Boss DD pedals are like the Vans shoes of delay pedals; they’ll never go out of style and they always work.
Hahaha yes!
People still wear Vans shoes?
Cept when your dd6 decides to only do 1 mode!
It’s boots..heavy duty, go with anything, classic and simple
'They always work' - tell that to the DD7s out there with select switches/pots that have a mind of their own. Had one that would randomly change settings all the time. Rip DD7
The best review of this pedal!! Including precious metal riffs was outstanding!! Rock on!!
Delay is the best effect ever. It's all I need in my effects loop. Fantastic playing btw, sick lead tones :)
Couldn't agree more!
So metal! 🤘🏼 Thank you for sharing brother.
