If anyone's interested in hearing an album that is basically built around this technique, Angels And Airwaves' "We Don't Need to Whisper" basically uses it on 90% of the tracks. The music might not be to everyone's taste but they do use the 8th note delay in very interesting ways !

Tom started experimenting with Boss DD-6 Digital Delay on the Box Car Racer album, used to experiment with Boss BF-3 Flanger on the self-titled Blink-182 album. So Angels & Airwaves is a tribute to U2 and The Cure as part of their influence. The other side is his punk legacy.

The Beatles “We can Work it out” is a great example of going from quarter to dotted eight notes. At least that’s how I think of it. When it gets to that “so I will ask you once again” part, Ringo goes to a beat that’s 3/4ths of the regular beat of the song. So when thinking about how to tap in dotted eighth notes based on the quarter note, I just play a version of ‘We can Work it out’ in my head that’s in beat with the song I’m playing and then I jump into the “ask you once again” part to get the dotted eighth note tapped in properly.

margix that sound is Steve Lillywhite ergo Johnny Marr , The Edge or charlie Burchill. The edge got his big break by discovering harmonics and balanced conflicting delays that then expanded while working with Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois and Michael Brook. Then working with Flood he started working with cv controlled lfo controlled arp odyssey like modules. Of course he works with his own technician so it’s been awhile since he has done his own shoegazing

I usually figure out the tempo of the delay through maths:
You take the BPM of the song you're playing, divide it by 3 and multiply by 4.
Example - you're playing a song with 120 BPM. You divide it by three and get 40. Then you multiply it by 4. End result - 160. So you tap a 160 BPM delay sound.

That trick to get the dotted eighth notes while staying in the quarter note setting is great!!
I can set my stomp box to dotted 8 but it's a long process of inserting a cable, hold down the on/off switch, turn a dial, etc...which takes too long and is stuck in that setting until I reverse the procedure.
So with the 3 over 4 poly-rythmn I can leave the pedal set to quarter notes and jump into dotted eight on the fly!
It took some practice but I have it down!
    Thank you so much!!

Wow, I think about those little Soundpages once in a while. I had forgotten what they were called, but occasionally I'd try to explain the concept to a youngster: "Well, it was attached between pages of a magazine, like a subscription insert. Made of really thin vinyl, so it flexed. You'd cut it out, it was smooth on the bottom so they'd tell you to tape a coin to it so it wouldn't slip as it tried to make a revolution on the turntable with the weight of the tone arm on it..." Then, spying the glazed over, uncomprehending expression of the bewildered Millennial I'm talking to, I try another approach: "Well, a magazine was a thing made out of paper, with words printed on it... No, not an app -- paper and ink were physical things. So was the disk. Ah, y'know what? Forget it." Then I say: "It was free." The kid lights up. "So, free... like MUSIC!" Great playing, BTW. I've watched and listened to a lot of your demos and performances.

Great explanation Paul. I learned this technique a very long time ago, when delays were explained to me by a few great producers years and years ago. It not easy sometimes for beginners to "get" how delay timing works, and how the dotted eight note works with delays. SO many artists use this and its great when you find a way to explain it so that players actually understand and can make really god use of the delay, instead of just finding cool stuff...LOL If that makes sense. Great vid.. this will help a TON of people figure out great sounds and patterns...I bet the sale of delays just spiked!..

wish I would have found a video like this about 6 years ago when I was learning this. I heard a friend do it and had to figure out how to do it myself by just experimenting. I really enjoyed the explanation of it all.

Paul, congratulations for the lesson, excellent as usual. An alternative that I have always used to be able to set a delay that doesn't have the "dotted eight" function or a tap tempo is to set the repetitions so that they beat every last sixteenth of the first quarter (which is easily identifiable as it is the sixteenth precedent in the second quarter). It's just a different point alternative to yours and maybe it can be useful. But the two concepts are essentially the same: dividing the beat into sixteenths "1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a" the dotted eight is on "the 1, the a of the 1, the + of the 2, the e of the 3 and the 4. " then the beat resets itself and starts again. So my trick is to set only one repetition and set it on the "a of the 1" High level of theory nerd here :D Thanks for the video

This trick is how i learned how to play harmonys in scales and also a fun way to work on your speed you have to start over if you miss a note.

Reminds me of "Awake" by Tycho, but listening to it again, it sounds like the different instruments are just offset or syncopated or whatever you call that
