If anyone's interested in hearing an album that is basically built around this technique, Angels And Airwaves' "We Don't Need to Whisper" basically uses it on 90% of the tracks. The music might not be to everyone's taste but they do use the 8th note delay in very interesting ways !
Tom started experimenting with Boss DD-6 Digital Delay on the Box Car Racer album, used to experiment with Boss BF-3 Flanger on the self-titled Blink-182 album. So Angels & Airwaves is a tribute to U2 and The Cure as part of their influence. The other side is his punk legacy.
I've been using tap tempo and timed delay pedals for thirteen years and never once thought about using the 4:3 trick. That's so simple I can't believe it. Thank you!
The Beatles “We can Work it out” is a great example of going from quarter to dotted eight notes. At least that’s how I think of it. When it gets to that “so I will ask you once again” part, Ringo goes to a beat that’s 3/4ths of the regular beat of the song. So when thinking about how to tap in dotted eighth notes based on the quarter note, I just play a version of ‘We can Work it out’ in my head that’s in beat with the song I’m playing and then I jump into the “ask you once again” part to get the dotted eighth note tapped in properly.
@LetsGoOverground You're Correct. and i didn't think it was funny; 'cos i've heard a lot of so called experts make that comment about his seriously hard work. he is aware of things guys like whoever (i don't want to know his handle) (oh; and i just noticed yours-good one-Zooropa, kids) made that clever little jab Wish they could do. but it takes more practice than just connecting the dots to learn some Van Halen (respect) solo. not least of which is also being a Part of a Band-not an interchangeable Trick Shooter. Paul, congratulations for the lesson, excellent as usual. An alternative that I have always used to be able to set a delay that doesn't have the "dotted eight" function or a tap tempo is to set the repetitions so that they beat every last sixteenth of the first quarter (which is easily identifiable as it is the sixteenth precedent in the second quarter).
