Thank you for creating your channel with needle tatting! My mom tried to teach me needle tatting when I was about 17 years old. It seemed much easier than the shuttle tatting my grandmother (her mom) did, and I was excited to be another generation to learn how. Fast forward to me in my 50's and my mother's health diminishing. On my list of the many things I will miss about my mom would be to not remember how to needle tat. I'm remembering more quickly now, and your way of teaching is very calm and steady. Thank you, again.
Thank you! :) And you are keeping alive a beautiful tradition and beautiful memories! :)
This was so helpful. Watching your bids helped me learn to tat in less than 30 min. I will be recommending you to all my crafting friends. Bravo!!
This brings many happy memory of my childhood a very long time ago! I remember my mother doing this while I did my homework. Sometimes she did crochet sometimes tatting or knitting while I sat at the lap end of the Singer sewing machine writing down something for my teacher for the next day, but I often glanced at my mother with her fingers so agile creating wonderful patterns. Happy memories, even though there was a war going on. Still I remember the tatting but not the war so thank you for the memories.
Thank you for sharing that! Very wonderful memories. I love that we can keep these traditions alive, and remember the good times more clearly the the bad! Thank you!!!
thanks so much for your awesome tutorials.i love tatting and have done shuttle tatting, but this is really much quicker and easier on my hands, as i have carpal tunnell and diabetic neuropathy. I am so glad to find a method that means i dont have to give up tatting.
Thanks Kate.
So glad to hear that you are enjoying it, Maureen! :) I gave myself carpal tunnel in my teens (crocheting too much), that's one of the reasons I gravitated towards needle tatting too; like you say, it is easier on the hands than shuttle. I was super glad to find it too, that is one of the reasons that I love sharing how to do it with everyone. Have fun, create beautiful things!!! If you ever want to share pictures of your tatting, you can on the RustiKate facebook page. :)
I can use a shuttle to tat big patterns but I'm now trying needle tatting because I need to make some jewellery and think needle tatting would be great. You are the best tutor Kati
Your directions are clean and precise. I loved your speed method using the thumb for the first half, leaving you set up to do the second half of the double stitch. The close ups are in focus which I have found to be a problem for some video makers. Thank you for your great videos,
Thank you! And I am glad that you find them helpful. Happy tatting! ~ Katy :)
Glad you like it, Sharon. :) So glad that you're sticking with the tatting! I bet you're doing awesome!!! :) Happy holidays!!! :) Blessings, Katy
I am very glad that you have found tatting! :) The needle is called a "tatting needle", I use size 5. You can also use a 5 inch doll needle, either works fine. They can be purchased on Amazon. The item that looks like a little fish, is called a tatting shuttle. There are two methods for tatting one uses a needle and the other uses a shuttle. The results are the same, whichever method you use. :)
Glad your are giving tatting a try! Hope these videos helped a bit! Keep up the good work, Catherine! :)
hi, new to tatting and love your videos. They have answered numerous questions! Thank you!
So glad that you are tatting, Stefanie! Thank you for the encouragement. Happy tatting!

This video was a nice find for me. I’ve been curious about it for some time. Utube wasn’t around and I forgot about it. My aunt had a friend who was blind and she sat tatting and talking a mile a minute but I could not figure out her hand movements and was too shy to ask. She was so quick🎉 to
Katy! I love your tutorials and have learned to needle tat by watching them and practicing. So far I've not made anything from a pattern but have made up my own. I noticed on some of your videos, though, a reference to your foot thongs and a pattern for them, but I can't find them. Help! Would love to try making them. Thanks for all your help and I hope and pray whatever health issues you have, you'll be getting better soon. Thank you
Anita, I am glad that you are tatting! Create beautiful things! :)
Thank you, Deby, and I am so glad that you like the videos and have been tatting! :) UA-cam recently auto-updated my pages to the new format, which is harder to navigate then the old, so that is probably why you haven't been able to find the links to the pattern you are looking for. On the main page you should see the "about" button towards the top of the page, click that and go to bottom of that page there should be an Etsy and a Craftsy link, the pattern is available on both. :)
Hi Kate: I have been TRYING to tat with a shuttle on & off for about 6 months. That was until I found your site. In 15 minutes, I was following everything you demonstrated. I'm so excited. I threw the shuttles away!! I am having problems trying to remember to make the knot at the end of rings and chains. Working on that. I notice you are using some thread in a skein. What kind is it? I love how your tatting looks using that thread. I will be following you from now on. My grandmother passed before she could teach me tatting. So I am eager to learn. Enjoy ALL of your videos. Awesome!!

Susie, hi! Sorry to take so long to respond! I have been away from the internet for a year. I am so glad that you are tatting now, and that I was able to help you learn something that was a family art form. :) Your grandma would be proud of you! The thread I use is called DMC Baroque Crochet Cotton size 10, and I love it! You can find it on Amazon, and I have a few for sale on my Etsy Shop as well: www.etsy.com/shop/RustiKate. Happy tatting! And you can stay in touch and show me what you are working on the RustiKate Facebook Page. ~ Katy :)
I love your work. You teach very well. Thank you.
Thank you for the encouragement, Claire!
RustiKate
Thanks for making the new videos Katy!
I loved your video I must check out the beginning videos so hopefully I can learn.
Paula, have you watched the new video on closing (cl) rings (R.) ? It is available on the RustiKate Channel and on the RustiKate facebook page. Let me know if this does not help, or if you have already watched it.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Very inspiring videos. I like tatting with needle and getting good at it but I am hopeless with shuttle. Thanks again and good luck in your work :)
Thank you so much! And happy tatting! ~ Katy :)
So wonderful to hear, Amy!!!! :) You can share photos of your projects on the RustiKate facebook page (I have an album and everything on there, for bragging about you all, so proud of the creativity I see and work you all put into it!). Google "free tatting patterns", there are a ton out there. UA-cam doesn't allow links here, or I'd show you some good ones. The ones I like the best are vintage tatting patterns that are in the public domain, very stunning projects!
If you like this video and found it helpful, please “Subscribe” and/or “Like,” to help me make more! Enjoy! ~ Katy
Beautiful craft now you have a new subscriber
Thanks, Marsha! I hope you will enjoy tatting as much as I do! :)
I like very much the site and learned a lot , very interesting
I'm glad that it was helpful for you. Happy tatting, Nadia!
You give great, motivational tutorials, thank you :)
Thank you, and happy tatting! ~ Katy :)
Now, I am amazed. I always this required a tatting shuttle.
I used to think that too. Try the needle method and let me know what you think! :)
RustiKate
Thanks. After watching your videos, I purchased some needles, and I'm totally sold.
Like everything, there's a learning curve, but I don't allow myself to be defeated easily, so I'm confident I'll get it.
I think the hardest part is understanding how to link things up, but I'm getting better at that, too. When I feel I am creating perfect little pieces, I will begin to advance beyond practice pieces.
When I was 9, my mother taught me how to crochet with fine thread, beginning with a chain stitch. By the time I had umpteen yards of chain, I was ready to go on to the next step, and that's how I work with everything: Don't move on to the second step until after first perfecting the first.
Thanks for all the helpful advice!!!
That is totally awesome!!!! :) Happy tatting!!! ~ Katy :)
Can't help but think of "utatane". But this is beautiful work!
I made my first project thanks to you. I am obsessed already with tatting. I crochet but this will be a nice summer craft to work on. I don't do videos but would love to send you a pick of what I have done.
Also do you know of where beginners can get some free easy patterns to start off with?
Somehow your comment was marked as spam, sorry for not replying.
That's not a problem. I figured you were busy replying to others.
@@maratbabe Would love to see photo of what you have made, if you still want to share. :) If you are on FB, the RustiKate facebook page there is great place to share photos.
Thank you for showing the different threads used. I had never seen twine before it is a very beautiful rustic look. I like your sample number two and how there are two rings in one picot where might I get this pattern?
I really like all the different looks too. :) The designs are all my own original patterns. I don't have them available to the public yet, but I hope to make them available as I am able. I am glad you like it. :)
Yes, please look at my RustiKate Channel, and or search Needle Tatting Basics by RustiKate, or The Speed Tatting Method by RustiKate. These are both beginner tutorials. Hope this helps! :) I'm Glad you are giving tatting a try! :)
Hi Kate I have just watched several videos of yours on tatting and am hooked.
Can I ask what size needle you are using in pendants with beads, bead size
Cord thickness as looks alot thicker than some which is like sewing thread

Ruth

Somehow your comment was marked as spam, sorry for not replying.
i was wondering if you have or could make a video on how to make that lovely foot jewelry your wearing in your video. i would love to learn that.
Tia, I don't have any videos on how to make the tatted foot thongs yet. But I do have a very detailed pattern with how-to photos, available on the rustikate shop on both Etsy and Craftsy. I hope that may work for you! :) I believe there are links to them from the rustikate youtube channel "about" page.
I've seen a lot about reversing the work but don't really get it. Do you have a video about that?
Yes, let me find you the link. ua-cam.com/video/s9Y_FsuYs6o/v-deo.html
Hi Katy I just discovered Tatting, I'm not in your country. Is that a special needle I need to buy? What is it called and is it a place online I can get it? Thank you for your help. Ahh.. I've seen other people used something that looks like a little fish hehehe, is that different? Thank you!
Somehow your comment was marked as spam, sorry for not replying.
do you have a video from when you very first started so I can watch and see how you first started out
This is my first tatting video and it is on the basics of tatting: ua-cam.com/video/WVrStT1G1qU/v-deo.html
Muito lindo. Como se chama na língua portuguesa?
Tatting
Beautiful!!!
In joining a picot you made fresh DS instead of treating the joined picot as the first part of DS.
Why so?
عالیه فارسی ترجمه بشه ممنون
Hello ! pouvez vous me dire où je trouve ce genre d'aiguille ?????s'il vous plait ! merci beaucoup
You can find them online, if you search for them they are called "tatting needles." You can also use "5 inch doll needles," which you can find online and also in most sewing and craft stores. I hope this helps! Happy tatting! :)
can you do this one from the beginning like you do the other ones so people can follow along that way
Sorry, Trina, this one isn't meant to be a full project, just a quick how-to on joining picots. But I hope I can do more full projects in the near future.
i like it very nice thanks
