Hi Katy. Thank you very much for the split ring instruction. Can you please share some more patterns with us. And also beading in the laces or motifs. Thanks again.
Love your explanation and video! It makes it so easy! I've been trying to learn needle tatting with a book, and it is SO much EASIER with you! Thank you!
Love your videos! I was struggling trying to teach myself shuttle tatting, then viewed your needle tatting videos, now I'm doing much better with the needle!
Your videos are so wonderfully clear and easy to follow! I've been tatting (needle and shuttle) for years and have never done any split-ring until now.
This tutorial is great! I was always wondering how to do this, it completely baffled me, but after watching this tutorial, I feel like I can start creating split rings right now! :D Thank you so much for this tutorial, it has been extremely helpful!
This is great...just what I was looking for. I've just started tatting and saw "split ring", and the directions that I found were for shuttle tatting, rather then needle. This was so easy to understand. Thank you.
When I do the stitches on the eye of the needle end, I like to do the second stitch of the double stitch first and then the first stitch second. I do this because then both sides of the split ring have the same bumps on the picot thread. This action perhaps comes from the "Libra" in me who wants to be balanced. I am happy to hear of your triumph over illness in that it did not stop you from making a difference in the lives of many. What a blessing and inspiration you are, you work as best as you can, and never give up, god bless.
Thank you! :) I have used a tatting shuttle, but there are so many wonderful shuttle tatting videos on UA-cam by other tatters (great tatters), that I feel like there is more of a need for me to make videos on needle tatting - there is less help available on how to do it. :) I'm flattered and encouraged, that you'd like to see that from me though! :)
The p = picot. "p" is abbreviation for picot. Picots are the loops. On the RustiKate Channel, there is a video that shows how to do this. It is called "Tatting - #1 Needle Tatting Basics: part one" Hope this helps! :)
For Split Rings you do use up the tail very quickly because you do tat off of it. as you do with the ball thread. When making a normal ring and/or chain, the tail is still important, you just need less of it, because it is the thread that actually goes through the center of your tatting (the double stitches) when they come off the needle, it is the core thread. So it is being depleted a little every time you make a ring or chain. Hope this helps! :)
Thanks for your comment, Grace. I'm glad that you found a video series that you like. Stick, with whoever makes it easiest for you! I was struggling with a serious illness at the time, and only made this video because it was so often requested. I've not been able to make more or put the time or effort in to the latter videos, as I would have liked. Happy tatting!
Thank you! Your videos are so helpful! And you pace yourself in a matter that's helps a beginner. You are a great tatting instructor! Keep it up please...
Wow,thank you so much! It couldn't be easier! I found trying to teach myself how to needle tat from a book gets to be way too hard. It shows pictures but lacks easily written directions.
Yay, I'm so glad that you are going to give tatting a try! :) And I am impressed that you watched all my videos - wow! Have fun, and happy tatting!!! :)
I'll put it on my list of things to show! :) If you go to the rustikate channel page, and look at the links there is a link to my tatting blog, and there you will find a post with the tatting abbreviation definitions. That might make it a little easier. :)
You are amazing! Thanks so much for all the instructions on tatting. Have you ever used a tatting shuttle? I would love to see video instruction with that.
Katy, I'm so glad I found you, I had seen this as a bracelet, thought it was macrame, but now I'm happy to enter the world of tatting.... I just need advice on how long to make the tail if I want to make a bracelet... you mentioned leaving about 2 feet, but since it disappears as it's tatted in the design, it seems too short. The ball side is no problem, but I don't know how to handle the tail side except have tons of length which is a pain. Maybe I'm doing something wrong...? I made a few rings and ran short right away. Hope you can help. Thank you for your great tutorials. :)
Hmmmm, sounds like you may be tatting with the wrong thread if you are running out that fast? 2 feet of tail should last you quite awhile. Check and make sure that the tail thread is only being used to pull through your tatting as tatting slide off of needle, serving as the core of the tatting. The tail should not be the thread that you are tatting onto the needle, that should be the thread coming from the thread ball. Check and see if this is happening. If it is not, and you need more feedback, look me up on the RustiKate facebook page and I can try and help more there. Happy Tatting!
Thank you very much. Your tutorials are clear and helpful. Will you ever do one on how to read a tatting pattern? I'm a novice at tihis beautiful craft.
I love yours that by step instructions and when you show the veteran and how to do it on the screen that is so great thank you so much but can you connect the Pequod's together do you have a video on that
I am glad that you find the videos helpful. :) Yes, I have a video on joining picots, you should be able to find it on the RustiKate youtube channel listings.
Thank you for this tutorial! This would make great trim for my historical sewing! I've always somehow thought tatting is really hard to do, but split rings doesn't seem that much different from other needlecrafts... and here I thought I already had all the possible needles in the world, now need to find a tatting needle... or maybe long upholstery needle would work for a small tatting like this?
You may have to add one or a few more needles to your collection! :) I am super happy that you found these videos, and hope you will try it and love tatting! You could probably start with a long upholstery needle if it is about 5" long. The real deal is 5" and has a blunted end (so that you don't poke yourself). There are actually a variety of tatting needle sizes, thin to pretty thick, but the average size 5 needle is most often used, and is probably closest to your needle width. I think you could totally start with your needle, no reason it wouldn't work for practicing the basic stitch at very least. :)
Hi, this is beautiful. How do you make the big loop? You work so fast that that I'm not able to see how you make it. Really this is great, congratulations! A friend from Mexico
I love your videos! I'm new to tatting but these are very helpful and informative! I was wondering if you would consider making a video to show how one can undo mistakes as in unraveling if that is even possible...:) As I said, I'm new at this...
Kate, you are indeed a great teacher. I could never tat and now i am a good needle tatter. Do you have a tutorial that shows how to follow a diagram. I am very interested. Thanks.
Shriani, thank you! I am so glad that you are tatting! :) I have not done a tutorial on diagrams yet. I never write patterns out that way, it just is not an easy concept for most people to grasp or follow. So it has not been on the top of my list of things to teach. But if you are interested in it, and like that form of pattern, I will add it to my list. Happy tatting! :)
This made me realize I've been counting my stitches wrong the double stich after the picot I have been counting that as the picot stich and not as one of my double stiches.
I have a question regarding the length of the tale thread. If I am tatting a long chain with split rings how do I know much of tail thread to leave so I cont run out.
Hi, thanks for your prompt reply, on your instructions you put 3ds, p, 3ds, p, 3ds, p, 3ds, cl. I would like to know how do you make de "p" I do not know the word, my English is not good. As my English is not good then I learn following the "intructions of your hands". Many thank in advance for you help. Monica from Mexico City

very nice tut, you might consider using a gymbol, reason: the thread will unroll and untwist, giving you a straight thread line.
Cool, thank you! :)

This made me realize I've been counting my stitches wrong the double stich after the picot I have been counting that as the picot stich and not as one of my double stiches.
Do you want to insert the bead in the center picot? Or actually in the very center of the Ring?
I have a question regarding the length of the tale thread. If I am tatting a long chain with split rings how do I know much of tail thread to leave so I cont run out.
Espetacular!
Thank you that was quick and easy.
Your are very welcome! Happy tatting! :)
Hi! Thanks for sharing. I would like to insert beads at the center of the ring. Which is the best method? Thanks.
Hi, thanks for your prompt reply, on your instructions you put 3ds, p, 3ds, p, 3ds, p, 3ds, cl.
I would like to know how do you make de "p" I do not know the word, my English is not good.

How can I tat a long length lace with split rings. I got lost when we have to rethread the needle. We wouldn't have loose ends right. Kindly instruct again, pls.

It is tough to figure out without seeing it in a run through at least once. Hope this was helpful!
Oh Thank you so much, just what I wanted to know .
Awesome!!! I would like tatting but I don't know where find the needle. Can you help me please?
You can find them at some craft stores, amazon, the handy hands website, and on my esty shop @ Etsy (www.etsy.com/shop/RustiKate ). :)
Sofia Zelaya I've found the set at JoAnn's
thank you so much🥰
This is awesome ... thank you so much! P.S. Are you the fastest needle tatter in the world? :)
Just wow
Is it the closing of the ring that you are asking about? Let me know and I will try to help! :) Thank you for the question. :)
I have a strange question, do you have to turn your needle when doing a spilt ring? I haven't turned mine and need to know if it is allright
You shouldn't have to, as a rule. But what is your next step after the split ring? That might help me know if you should turn it.
So glad it helped! :)

I am sorry, I could not get this comment to translate clear enough to understand.
you need to slow done it hard to fallow can you
please slow step by step please
Sorry, that it is too fast. I have heard there is an app that slows the youtube video speed down, maybe that would help. Happy tatting, Sonia!
sonia hancock I disagree there are plenty of slow tutorials out there this one was great and just right speed for me
could you please do it slower,I
can't catch up
There is a UA-cam option that allows you to slow down the video to whatever speed you need! :)
If you weren't going so fast maybe beginners could see what you're doing.
To fast😔👎
Your videos are very helpful.
