This is my personal favourite of the year so far. It actually feels like a work of art. The craftmanship is undeniable, and it's just filled with atmosphere. Loved it!
This movie is insane.
I don't think I understood a single thing that happened but I loved it.
This is easily my movie of the year due to its sheer absurdity and creativity. There simply is no other film like this that I’ve ever seen and it is truly marvelous how realized the world and characters are in all their depravity and darkness.
@CWS and TKP 66-02 I have not seen these films. Thank you for the recommendations.
Inside is one of the most atmospheric and unsettling games I've ever played. Will have to check this out as a fan of stop motion films I'm surprised I hadn't heard of this prior.
I love that water droplet metaphor! Such an evocative way to describe the pace and structure (or lack thereof) of this one
Excellent review 👀👍 I saw this film during the pandemic at the Lumiere Music Hall in Beverly Hills. It had only one screening. It was during the pandemic in the summer with a rare 90+ degree heat. The air conditioning was out and at any other theatre the place would have closed its doors. I sat near the front of the theatre wearing a mask dripping in sweat with two people sitting far behind me. They too stayed until the end and I figured they must be mentally ill like me or the filmmakers themselves. Needless to say, this was a full immersion experience like none I’ve had before and felt like I was a character in the movie. I will never forget that experience. It feels like it was yesterday 🥵👍
In a world of perfected CGI and no restraints, this movies imperfections are such a breath of fresh air.
The problem with your reviews is that I agree with them too often. Maybe it’s better to read/watch reviews with people not so closely aligned sensibilities?? You always bring an amazing perspectives that I miss completely. Keep it up.
really articulate review, I regret not seeing this on a big screen at the Prince Charles Cinema in London over the summer!
i saw it there last night enjoyed it
'Star Wars on acid twisted from Hell" 🤣 This looks freaking awesome
It has this harrowing Adam Jones (of Tool) feel, but cranked to 11 by the looks of it.
Thanks for the review, I'll check it out!
Thanks so much for reviewing this! I’ve been looking forward to seeing your review for a while and it did not disappoint. I don’t have much to add to what you said other than that the idea of the destructive nature of the universe is eventually juxtaposed with how persistent life is. I felt like in that way there was an odd glimmer of hope in this otherwise very grim and nihilistic hell scape. But yeah, like others have said, this is my favorite movie of the year so far and I doubt it’ll be surpassed. I got to see it at an outdoor showing and there was a lightning storm in my periphery which completed the visuals really well.
Your shirt and the pillow right in the background fit very well 😎
You seem like an interesting person just found your channel awesome video
I got to see Phil Tippett give a talk last month at a convention in San Jose. Super interesting guy, and he told some great stories. I'm really looking forward to seeing this film, but as he said 'It's definitely not for everyone!'
Ohhhh yes I was waiting for you to get around reviewing this one
I don't think I quite loved the movie just cause the found the lack of a concrete narrative and characters challenging but I still really enjoyed just living in this world and seeing all the different fucked up creations. And despite having essentially no story, I was never bored. There was always something to examine or just observe the grotesque beauty of. Very interesting work made more interesting by its backstory
I saw the movie and man i wish that the biblical metaphors were more explicit beyond the first scenes. That was what got me intrigued and i don't feel resolved there. Obviously, i did appreciate the movie, and the effort put into the animation. Enjoyed a lot of it but also wish i saw and understood more
Did anybody catch Robby the Robot amongst the detritus? Great review.
I rather enjoyed this film and I felt like the plot was actually pretty straightforward. To me, it is mainly a retelling of the story of babel (man attempting to reach the realm of god) only the tower has been flip upside down which is why man is decending (through the assassin) to the realm of god/universe below. Mankind’s ability to manipulate and control nature/humans for it’s own motivations is a dominant theme, and the film underscores how that desire typically leads to our own destruction.
Best film of the year.
I love Inside, it's a masterpiece.
Interesting, and I love your shirt 👍
Are you watching house of the dragon. Could we get your thoughts?
Must see this. But must see it on a big screen, and I'm not sure I'll get that chance. Thanks for the review, anyway.
amazing stop-motion or go-motion or whatever, this movie is a trip!
Great review, also want to add that the film was strangely hilarious? So much slapstick comedy throughout.
The side of the world we tend to ignore fearfully
Love your reviews and a friend asked me to watch this and I think I’ll pass…but what did you mean by lysurgic(ly)….referring to acid look of movie or did you mean surgically? Thanks…
Mad God is one of my favorites of the year, easily. Despite being a harrowing nightmare and a symphony of sin and punishment, the end of the film left me oddly...hopeful? With the alchemist taking the fetus-like being and breaking it down to stardust, the matter we come from. I think that at the core of Mad God there's a rather heartwarming message, one of individualistic impact. By that I mean, inside each and every one of us, there's a universe of possibilities. We all have the possibility to be good or evil. It's up to you to explore the universe of your soul, for we are all intertwined in the grand cosmic realm. In that same sense, our actions and teachings have a much wider impact than we realize, specifically on the next generation of our kind. The cycle continues, and it's up to us if we want to stop it or not.
Uh, interesting, I got it entirely the other way around
I love stop motion, and taken as individual scenes, I loved the film HOWEVER I found that as a complete film, it started to get monotonous.
This movie owes a lot to Adam Jones from TOOL.
Robbed it from h.m.v would of paid the 5 quid if i knew it was going to be good. Might go pay for it now.
I love all your references (Star Wars on acid!), and I might add a couple more: for video games, aspects of _Bioshock_ and _Fallout_ came to mind, but for movies, I got a distinct Tarkovsky's _Stalker_ vibe, perhaps because of the trains, the jeep, and the power stations, but also from some of _Mad God's_ moods. Great analysis.
Sounds like the kind of movie where you say, okay, I've seen this movie, I can die now.
oh hey, girly...."for what it's worth", was released this friday by stevie nicks my child''
It’s a nightmarish perpetual motion of life & death
I hated Everything Everywhere All At Once, so not sure if I’m going to like this one
FWIW I totally did too, but dug Mad God
CGI gets worse ever film I see it in.
I loved this movie I just wish it had more plot to it
Artistically, it was awesome. Thinking of how almost everything in every frame was hand-made was inspiring in the same way the aerial sequences in Top Gun: Maverick were, that feeling where your inner boomer speaks and says 'they don't make 'em like this anymore' . Sadly, that's all I could get out of it.
As a movie, imo it sucked. It sets a tone and...that's all it does. I hear 'this should have been a short' thrown as criticism at feature-length films fairly often, but if a movie ever justifies that comment it's this one - it's a feature-length scatological Tool video from the early '00s. It remains insanely, maddeningly Mo-NO-TONOUS throughout. It makes the same error that every inferior work that sets out to make some version of the thesis 'life is grim/sucks' makes - it lacks anything as counterpoint other than grimdark-ness to throw the grim-darkness into any kind of relief or resolution. Someone who tries to shock relentlessly quickly loses all ability to do so as everything becomes predictable and ultimately trite. You as an artist or a film-maker want to tell the world that life sucks? Ok cool, however you could so do a million times more effectively by demonstrating an awareness of life's fleeting non-suckiness, thus your work would have some kind of texture or some sense of sublimation to it that true works of art have. For its whole runtime I was expecting some kind of tonal shift that never came..maybe close to the end a little when you see into the colorful alien microworld but far too little and too late. The cosmic sequence it ended on was its best imo but failed to feel truly cosmic as the whole vision of the film preceding it was too monotone to justify it. And when your thesis is that...thin, it is very hard to pull of no-dialogue imo, and this movie certainly doesn't.
It was interesting in that I seemed to feel the film-maker as an antagonistic presence - it's the cinematic equivalent of being trauma-dumped on, the singular emotion of the piece is too unfiltered and hasn't been refined or processed into anything other than this incoherent scream. I feel there was a certain nastiness to it, or that quality of a depressed person where they want others to feel depressed too. Like that scene I mentioned with the aliens and the light-hearted music - it leads you on for a few seconds then turns to blood and viscera and death again. It's like the film-maker saying - you wanted something different, you think there is joy and laughter in this world? Lol everyone laugh at the IDIOT - all there is is PAINNNN. Like, whatever dude - I got bored over an hour ago.
And the utter humorlessness of it - a movie using stop-motion animation, surely an inherently humorous and quirky medium if there ever was one - feels unforgiveable to me.
interesting you say the humourlessness of it, there were quite a few of us chuckling at different points individually throughout and a couple of times where the whole theatre laughed together in the screening i was in
Absolutely disgusting - loved it
Oh. Something was passed around at your screening Alright. It just wasnt the movie. And no deepfocuslens. I'm not going to join your little circle and take a hit. I'm fine. Thank you very much.
🙏
💛
Thanks Much !
My co-worker is your doppelganger.
when you see the southern cross fot the 1st time...you understand know why you came THIS way. 'cause there was NO other where to go.......And why tF was that?.......hmmmm, girlyl?..
no, 'cause see, the heavier heavenly spheres attract the not so to orbit around them....or, as you may more so readily comprehend does the alfa wolf/wolfess....or even WORSE, the lone wolf....oh meee gosh!
so, how's about about a cafe du'lait in...ahhhmmm...budapest? (have you seen the ratio of fine young ladies there?...there specifically?).....or...take your pick
You need to wear less clothes for sure. I have no idea what movie you are talking about. It sounds like crap to me?
John dont go around expressing yourself like that :S you're not gonna get anywhere & you have a negative effect on the people you speak of - yeah shes prettty & she has physique to show of her figure as do many women - whatever your intention might be - compliment politely & you'll get places - perhaps you'll meet a woman who feels good because of your compliments & gives you a chance & changes you for the better - & u see theres so much more to a woman than crude lust - women have much to offer besides the sex appeal - even fully clothed it's very pleasant & it brings happiness to have one around that gets you and supports you - but you'll never meet her talking like that- take care of your girl & take care of women everywhere - let them feel comfortable- without feeling lustful eyes are on them all day - ugly focks like me cant get anywhere even if I'm respectful- but u john might have a better chance- become better & be happy - I wish u nothing but the happiness I never got - but start by changing for the better- I wish u the best on our part john
@@kentharper2222 I am 55 yrs old, and I have no intention of anything. I watched most of the video and deemed her to be simple and was just being rude. Thank you for your thoughts. I dont wish you anything.
you’re disgusting, old man
@@john2914 You deemed her to be 'simple' because she was speaking intelligently about a really good film? You're the one who is simple and can't appreciate actual art.
@@ottomanwilde4836 That sounds good to me.
