This modern bathroom renovation was a ton of work, but I'm super happy how it came out. I tiled the custom walk-in shower with large format porcelain tiles on the wall, and glass mosaic tiles on the shower floor. The shower also has a custom built-in shower niche, which is tiled to match the shower floor. We also tiled the bathroom floor and installed the custom floating concrete sink that I made last fall.

A common mistake when laying tile: starting at one edge. It may save some work and cut-offs, but it always looks a bit janky, especially when only a small sliver of tile is left on the other side. If you want to do it properly, you start at the center and cut equally on both sides. Check first whether a center seam or center tile gives you better edge pieces.

I'd say it depends. If your room isn't exactly right angled or you got for example a bathtub and your toilet on one side, then i'd start at the opposite edge to have "full" uncut tiles there and just cut at the side where the tub and toilet are. But yes, if you got a room where you'd end up with very small sliver, then starting in the middle is a good idea.

I just had a tile guy put mosaic tile in my shower, and I was fascinated to see him cut the drain hole in the middle of one of the sheets of tile FIRST. Then he put that sheet in, and worked out from the middle. It meant that he had to get the drain hole the right size, but location didn't matter much, and everything got to stay on the mesh.

Another key point with the DITRA is that it floats the tiles slightly so that there is less possibility of cracking the mortar or the tiles. Interesting fact: A floating tile system was employed by the Romans for much of their flooring in ancient history and explains why much of their floor tile work remains intact today. This is where Schluter got the product their idea from! As a result, less chance for leakages overall and more long-term durability.

    • @kathyusa-iowa5137
      @kathyusa-iowa5137 3 роки тому +6

A key factor with securing the DITRA is that you make sure your layer of thin-set mortar is thick enough! Use a 3x3mm or 4x4mm notched trowel. Lay your first piece on. Press well, then lift the short end up. Make sure the DITRA is fully covered with thin-set. If it isn't, pull up the DITRA and apply more thin-set. Do the same with your second piece to make sure you've altered your troweling enough. After that, spot check to make sure you're still on track. 👌

Thank you for mentioning the trowel marks running in one direction parallel to the short side of the sheet. This should be done when setting tile as well.
Run the kerdi membrane horizontal next time. Then you can keep one continuous sheet and no need to use the band in the vertical corners. You’ll only need to band the walls to the floors and use the molded corner pieces.

I might've said this in a previous episode, but I really appreciate and enjoy watching this project, as an architectural design tech student, we don't just focus on the design, but also the materials, construction, technical and other aspects. What is the build-up for the floors, the walls, how to them waterproof, and to stay structurally integrated and so on.
And even if there's a difference in building codes compared to the US and UK, watching this project from the start alongside my 2nd year of university has helped me understand further of all materials, methods and techniques in practical application, but that aside its also really satisfying to see the transformation, thanks for recording the project and allowing us to follow along

Beyond the greater difficulty in installation on a sloped shower pan you mentioned, use of large, high gloss tiles for the floor of a shower are not really a good idea. It can be like walking on ice.
Matte finish and small(er) tiles give far more texture for traction and safety on an already slippery surface.

Schluter only requires a 2" overlap. Since the membrane covers the entire front flange of that niche it'll be fine giving he used shluter all-set to apply the membrane. Schluter products rely on the science of water molecules not being able to penetrate such a thin gap. It's a great product when installed properly

Mostly a nice tile installation. Two nits:
First, the verticals would look better if they were done with a "running bond", with the seams offset by half the distance.
Second, you would generally size the verticals so the left and right edges on each wall were the same size, so that's a bit more of an aesthetic choice.

That and do the shower floor before the bottom row, that way everything is layered to prevent water from finding its way down...but it has a schluter membrane so not a big deal, but just the way I’d do it. Also very bold to set the trim profiles before tile, most of the time that tile would stick out past the profile by the time you get your thin set in there. This guy does very cool stuff, very impressive

@@veritush Thanks! I know what you mean, building with brick and mortar. I lived in Buenos Aires (en la provincia) for two years.
In the US, a brick home is also considered a premium construction method, but that’s only for the exterior part of the walls. The interior is always wood frame and drywall to leave cavities in the wall for insulation, plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling ducts, etc. It is also probably partly a matter of availability and cost of different construction materials in different regions (wood used to be cheap here, until this year!) and tradition, too. 🙂
