    The first half of the ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

    A tip I was given to avoid ending with a tiny strip is to measure the length of the space and divide by the visible width of a board. Multiplying the part after the decimal point with the width of the board gives you the width of your last strip. If that’s less than roughly an inch after subtracting the expansion margin, you’re likely better off starting with half a board instead of a full with one.

    • @un1530

    Pro tip when loading out upstairs. Clear some space at the top of the stairs. Shuttle a stack to the top of the stairs... then move the stack to where you need. That way you're up and down the stairs less often.
    That or have someone take to top of stairs and someone from there onwards. If you do it right you'll only be walking halfway up the stairs to then slide it off onto the landing.
    Having done it tens of thousands of times... trust me when I say it's a leg saver :-)

    Putting the hard wood flooring at a 45° angle in your hallway was a stroke of genius, as it will give the illusion that the hallway looks wider than it already is. If you had put it length ways, it would have made the hallway look narrow.

    Tip for laying floor, if anyone reads this. You should stagger your joints at least 3 times the width of a single board i.e. for 8 inch boards, the joint in the next row should be at least 24 inches away from the joint in the row before. And don't repeat joints for at least 2 or 3 boards. It's much more aesthetically pleasing, especially if the boards are different shades, cos that's when the joints really jump out at you.

      you can estimate install around 2.50 to 3.50 sq ft for installation that should ballpark what he saved on 2600 sq. one box with some chips is hardly an issue when he had an entire floor to do. those boards easily turned into starters somewhere else. we paid 2.25/sq for our house install, but i fought on that hard. it drove the price down several hundred to the price point i could live with.

    I put hardwood floors in my new house before I moved in, and it was a royal pain. Nobody told me that local building codes don't allow solid wood floors in basements - so I had to uninstall the entire floor in the basement and replace it with laminate wood flooring instead. I also had to level some of the floors before installing everything. I think I did around 2400 square feet, and it cost right at $30K - although that also includes two rooms of carpeting. If I had to do it over again, I would use bamboo in the kitchen. My neighbors have it in their kitchen, and it's super durable and looks great - plus it's sustainable and less costly.

      Loving the series Mike, I always look forward to a new episode. I like the change in direction in the bedroom and closet, it provides a visual divide between the two spaces. And the diagonal boards look absolutely gorgeous! I'd have been tempted to run a board all the way round the perimeter of the studio and hallway (to give a border) and then run the boards diagonally but that adds a huge amount of extra work with the router table.

  • @DiningTablePrintPlay

    I'm really curious, having only ever laid porcelain tiles and floating floors: what's the point of the expansion gap if you're nailing every board to the floor several times anyway? Surely you're not expecting the very last board in the row to expand by that much?! I get it for floating floors as the boards could easily expand that much over the entire width of the floor, but surely you're more likely to see individual boards buckling if you're nailing them all down?

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial 3 роки тому +16

      the nails can bend and move a bit. with only one side nailed down, you typically will see them all move in the same direction when expansion occurs, as I understand it

    One shout out for aspiring DIY folks, make sure you check the building codes when it comes to installing hardwood flooring.
    Noise transmission and heat exchange are the two usual categories and the underlay component of the flooring system needs to meet the minimum spec at least. Especially if it’s an apartment complex.
