As an award-winning author for decades, I doubt that's his true concern. As always, he's reporting, documenting things, and advocating against censorship, suppression, lies, deceit, etc.
If anything, making attempts on an author's life simply gives them more publicity. This is especially the case if you're someone as influential as Rushdie.
Rushdie is still under a death sentence from the Fatwā issued by the Supreme Leader of Iran. A fatwa cannot be revoked in Shia Islamic tradition.
