Years ago I watched 2 hours of news everyday and I realized how angry I was becoming. I had two little kids and I remember saying to myself - Is this how I want them to remember me? I stopped watching the propaganda news and felt a lot better. It's like a drug.
I don't even turn on broadcast television anymore and I'm always shocked at how stupid it is when I go to someone's house where it just runs in the background all day long.
What news do you read/watch? People say this about MSM all of the time but never say where they get their news from. I really want to know. NOT being a jerk.
My parents had the news on. In the car it was AM radio At home channel flipping 4p, 5p, 6p, 7p, took a break for prime time hours 8p to 11p then back to the news till bed time and started again at 6a until they got work. Holidays was a political argument I hated it and hung out in my room or friends. As young adult I only watch the weather part. I lived a very clueless rosey trustful non stressful life. For the past 10 years, my socialization is the news and social media and it is stressful to see and be aware of all the BS. I miss the clueless lifestyle Even disconnecting doesn't erase the BS roaming the streets.
I'm a retired reporter and noticed when reporters and editors quit reporting and editing and became 'journalists' the 'news' suddenly became theater for clicks.
American Media USED to be the 4th WALL. Now it has gone to shit, because of bribes, payouts and political/alphabet soup agendas. NO ONE trusts the American Mass Media media. I used to be Public Affairs for the Air Force. I was forced to LIE, EVERYDAY.

Working on a documentary about religion just got back from Tel Aviv. The number of rightwing religious ZEALOTS that are there calling for - literally - “wiping out ALL Palestinians including Children” is TERRYFYING. Netanyahu has members in his OWN cabinet that are calling for “nuking” Gaza, AND Netanyahu himself talked of the importance of making a new “Nakba” (terror campaign) against the people in Gaza to force them to leave. SOME of us are *consistent with criticizing religion, including Islam, Judaism, and Christianity… Don’t be me started the Christian version of Sharia Law. It is ABSOLUTELY embarrassing that Bill Maher - of ALL people - chooses to let his brain stop working with regards to criticizing Netanyahu’s regime in Israel! Not counting the terrifying interviews you will get to see in our documentary. there are COUNTLESS videos you can find online RIGHT NOW, of Israel’s rightwing religious NUTS calling for the death of ALL Palestinians, and the fact that Bill Maher REFUSES to mention, much less criticize them is an absolute embarrassment. After all these years of defending him against religious apologists, millions of us now realize, he really IS a biased bigot. And when I look at all the DEAD and starving kids suffering in Gaza, what Maher really is, is a villain.

As a reporter, retired now after over 30 years of doing it, Maher is spot-on with this analysis, especially media corporately-owned or at the national level. These days it is ratings and revenue, and precious little else. I usually try to sample several different media outlets; print, broadcast and occasionally cable. But far too many want what they want to hear and see, and they find it on the internet. Heaven help us all.

He is the king of breaking down media scares and explaining what's really going on. He's well informed and intelligent and focused on keeping the facts straight rather than getting everyone riled up. Not always. Are there many news outlets prone to attention grabbing headlines? Yes. But to lump them in with social media politicos of the left or right, w.hose every thumbnail implies some major "got you" moment or turning point has been reached, isn't right. I am having a hard time trying to find good journalism nowadays. Every news coverage is so superficial, reporters act like characters in a reality show, there are no news reports nor journalist researchers anymore, just people talking as outsiders, usually with a noticeable bias; meaning they are picking easy subjects. Interviews are all in starvation from hard, deep questions. And you will probably be better informed from late shows and standup comedy than from "news" channels. Journalism is dead... Money killed it.

I wrote a paper in university like 20 years ago and I predicted that the best source for information would become comedy shows, that the media would become obsolete in terms of information and truth-telling. My professor hated me and constantly made me a source for ridicule.
20 years later, and people would rather get their news from UA-camrs than the actual media because we’ve gotten so tired of the media lying and fear mongering to us 24/7. This last election cycle put that fall out on full display when the media and what people still listened to them were confident that Kamala would win and “Democracy will be safe for 4 more years,” but nope not only did we get Trump instead, but life is still going on as normal so far. And as a result, the media’s ratings have dropped dramatically. People are tired of the corporate news cycle. People are tired of Big Brother LLC telling us what to think and how to feel. It's really disturbing how easily over half the public is manipulated by media. They present a story, show only the facts they want you to hear, tell you exactly how you should interpret it, and it never occurs to the viewer to ask "is there an agenda at play? Did they leave anything out? What are the other ways I could interpret this?"

Did they just block every parking lot or something? University parking is already a major pain but idk, I'm trying to picture how that would come about. He is acting as if though what these students are doing is objectively nothing, the whole reason for their protest in general. If this was quote on quote nothing why was there conversation on sending in the cops the nation guards, politicians drafting up bills trying to label these students as terrorist and getting them placed on a no-fly list? All of that among a slew of other things. And yet Bill is saying this is the fault of Media propping it up. So what, would you rather them just follow students around on a average day and report that? Seriously what do you want? I'll tell you exactly what he wants, he doesn't want these students and other's getting Media coverage who are protesting because he doesn't agree with them. It's that simple cut and dry. Going on to prove the point he acts as though youths the ages of 18-29 with 34% being Israel Palestine being the top issue for them isn't a big deal. So much so not a big deal they've come out in such protest (a large percent of that percentage) they've halted public bridges, buildings, and other modes of transportation. When is the last time you've seen Foreign Policy get this amount of activism and attention aside from perhaps Black Lives Matter which I'd say was even smaller in comparison and scope to this. You can't down play this, not with all the video, Israel's own news reports, on the grounds reporters, showcasing all the awful atrocities Israel is committing. They've tortured individuals to death, handcuffed people so long that it required amputation's, those amputations are even being done with no anesthetic because Israel is blocking aid from coming in, bombing civilians, bombing civilians even after telling them go to this so called safe-zone, the evidence is proven as fact.

American Media USED to be the 4th WALL. Now it has gone to shit, because of bribes, payouts and political/alphabet soup agendas. NO ONE trusts the American Mass Media media. I used to be Public Affairs for the Air Force. I was forced to LIE, EVERYDAY.
And Bill is just an extension of that "newstainment."
I also went to school for journalism and practice it daily.
Bill, however, is a HACK, just like the people he exposes.

I'm 69 years old and miss the days of Walter Cronkite when news divisions of television were NOT allowed to focus on making a profit. Then the wall came down between news and entertainment and the news industry on television died.
I never saw Cronkite, Huntley, Brinkley, or Howard K. Smith take time in their broadcasts to hawk their memoir or promote their political treatise.
WC delivered the CIA talking points. The Vietnam War was won but lost by media and Democrats not to mention Jane F.
A Chinese General wrote in his book that they were finished.

Working on a documentary about religion just got back from Tel Aviv. The number of rightwing religious ZEALOTS that are there calling for - literally - “wiping out ALL Palestinians including Children” is TERRYFYING.
Netanyahu has members in his OWN cabinet that are calling for “nuking” Gaza, AND Netanyahu himself talked of the importance of making a new “Nakba” (terror campaign) against the people in Gaza to force them to leave.
SOME of us are *consistent with criticizing religion, including Islam, Judaism, and Christianity… Don’t be me started the Christian version of Sharia Law.
It is ABSOLUTELY embarrassing that Bill Maher - of ALL people - chooses to let his brain stop working with regards to criticizing Netanyahu’s regime in Israel!
Not counting the terrifying interviews you will get to see in our documentary. there are COUNTLESS videos you can find online RIGHT NOW, of Israel’s rightwing religious NUTS calling for the death of ALL Palestinians, and the fact that Bill Maher REFUSES to mention, much less criticize them is an absolute embarrassment.
After all these years of defending him against religious apologists, millions of us now realize, he really IS a biased bigot. And when I look at all the DEAD and starving kids suffering in Gaza, what Maher really is, is a villain.

As a reporter, retired now after over 30 years of doing it, Maher is spot-on with this analysis, especially media corporately-owned or at the national level. These days it is ratings and revenue, and precious little else. I usually try to sample several different media outlets; print, broadcast and occasionally cable. But far too many want what they want to hear and see, and they find it on the internet. Heaven help us all.
What about the pushed narratives based on lies like Russiagate or all the anti Trump propaganda?? How do explain the coordinated efforts??

The media is just using fear mongering tactics, doomsaying like every doomsayer before them. Every doomsayer before them was wrong. Not always. Are there many news outlets prone to attention grabbing headlines? Yes. But to lump them in with social media politicos of the left or right, w.hose every thumbnail implies some major "got you" moment or turning point has been reached, isn't right. this so called 'independent' media have a motivation to badmouth mainstream news. they need more people to switch to watching them instead, so THEY get more rating, while they are also just as biased, just as politically filtered, just as lacking in nuance.
I am having a hard time trying to find good journalism nowadays. Every news coverage is so superficial, reporters act like characters in a reality show, there are no news reports nor journalist researchers anymore, just people talking as outsiders, usually with a noticeable bias; meaning they are picking easy subjects. Interviews are all in starvation from hard, deep questions. And you will probably be better informed from late shows and standup comedy than from "news" channels.

20 years later, and people would rather get their news from UA-camrs than the actual media because we’ve gotten so tired of the media lying and fear mongering to us 24/7. This last election cycle put that fall out on full display when the media and what people still listened to them were confident that Kamala would win and “Democracy will be safe for 4 more years,” but nope not only did we get Trump instead, but life is still going on as normal so far. And as a result, the media’s ratings have dropped dramatically. People are tired of the corporate news cycle. People are tired of Big Brother LLC telling us what to think and how to feel.

Personally, I consider myself mostly a fan of Ben Shapiro and his colleagues at the Daily Wire. But I can't stand it when their UA-cam videos have headlines that say "Ben Shapiro DESTROYS woke leftist with facts and logic." Finally enough the movie anchorman 2 actually illustrates this perfectly.. The entire plot of that movie is Ron Burgundy realizing that he can make way more money and get way more viewers by sensationalizing the news and even making things up then actually reporting on the truth

The problem is you’re the exception! Too many fall for Tik Tok, or the talking head hosts that are more entertainment than news.
It's really disturbing how easily over half the public is manipulated by media. They present a story, show only the facts they want you to hear, tell you exactly how you should interpret it, and it never occurs to the viewer to ask "is there an agenda at play? Did they leave anything out? What are the other ways I could interpret this?"

If you go on Twitter or you go to the media comment sections you'll think that the world is ending. You'll sink all these neo Nazis are everywhere and antisemitism is behind every door and under every bed
Then you look at the actual poles and the majority of people stand by Israel and understand that they have a right to defend themselves. These are just a small group of Nazis that are very loud
You go on these websites you'll think that the world is ending. But there's violence in the streets everybody's getting shot and nobody can afford a loaf of bread
But you go out in the real world and yeah things might not be perfect things might be getting more expensive but it's not like it appears on social media. It's just a bad actors have understood that social media is a great way to manipulate people. The Russians figured that out in 2016
And tons of other people figured it out after. It doesn't have to be true but they can use social media to spread disinformation. And it's not just the Russians

I somewhat agree. My wife works for a major University and she had to work from home because of the protests.
Why? More details please because it's rather hard to believe protestors at a university of that size (a major university) could actually get in the way that much. Did they just block every parking lot or something? University parking is already a major pain but idk, I'm trying to picture how that would come about.
Also, I don't really mean to take it there necessarily but if it was just "another war", that'd be one thing I guess. But genocides (genocidal wars) are a bit different and demand swift rebuke by the public and most of the world otherwise it could be normalized as 'just war' or just another run-of-the-mill armed conflict. I mean, Putin is bad enough with his brutal (but not really unconventional) war further up north, but what Netanyahu is doing is somehow even worse. Anyway.. my only critique or question really for the college campus protestors is; "why there? why protest at a college campus?" Like I really don't understand why they are protesting and causing scenes on college/university campuses of all places and not government facilities or sites? And what were/are even their demands anyways? Because I've heard that being reported but I can't imagine what these kids are expecting or requesting from their school with regard to a crisis happening in Gaza.

You are so objectively wrong. Bill is downplaying shifting the attention away intentionally. He is acting as if though what these students are doing is objectively nothing, the whole reason for their protest in general. If this was quote on quote nothing why was there conversation on sending in the cops the nation guards, politicians drafting up bills trying to label these students as terrorist and getting them placed on a no-fly list? All of that among a slew of other things. And yet Bill is saying this is the fault of Media propping it up. So what, would you rather them just follow students around on a average day and report that? Seriously what do you want? I'll tell you exactly what he wants, he doesn't want these students and other's getting Media coverage who are protesting because he doesn't agree with them. It's that simple cut and dry.
Going on to prove the point he acts as though youths the ages of 18-29 with 34% being Israel Palestine being the top issue for them isn't a big deal. So much so not a big deal they've come out in such protest (a large percent of that percentage) they've halted public bridges, buildings, and other modes of transportation. And again, this is a Foreign Policy pick of all things. When is the last time you've seen Foreign Policy get this amount of activism and attention aside from perhaps Black Lives Matter which I'd say was even smaller in comparison and scope to this.
You can't down play this, not with all the video, Israel's own news reports, on the grounds reporters, showcasing all the awful atrocities Israel is committing. They've tortured individuals to death, handcuffed people so long that it required amputation's, those amputations are even being done with no anesthetic because Israel is blocking aid from coming in, bombing civilians, bombing civilians even after telling them go to this so called safe-zone, the evidence is proven as fact.

They totally made a few hundred people per protest seem huge and meaningful. It was a tiny amount of students disrupting the lives of thousands.
And I mean sure those students were evil and should absolutely be punished for their anti-Semitism and support for terrorism but they tried to make it out like it was everybody everywhere. Like when Donald Trump got elected and they were a handful of protests around the country and the media tried to cover it as if the whole country had come out into the streets and all of this American citizens hated Trump and nobody voted for him and it was all just Russians hacking the election which was the narrative they wanted to go with. That everyone in America hated him and nobody actually voted for him
Or with abortion. The majority of Americans support reasonable restrictions on it. Wants the baby can feel pain most Americans believe that's when you shouldn't be able to have an abortion
But if you watch the media you would think that everybody thinks abortions should be federally funded up until 9 months. Up until the day before the birth
Or guns. You watch the media you would think that mass shootings are a mass pandemic. That every single day every kid in every school is facing multiple mass shootings and schools are just this wild west of gunfire on a weekly basis
In reality mass shootings hardly ever happen. They just blow it out of proportion when it actually did.. You would be more likely to be struck by lightning twice than be involved or shot in a school shooting

If we want a truly free country then the media landscape has to change. I don't know if it needs more regulation or maybe the government should outright ban most media outlets and issue licenses that require you they follow basic journalistic standards or maybe some other kind of thing.
