As an Iranian I feel so ashamed of the Islamists here not just ruining our lives, but hurting this man's life as well for so long. What an amazing man and a brilliant writer you are Mr. Rushdie.
I’ve been fortunate enough to meet several Iranians in my life (I live in USA). All of them have been amazing people (same with all Nigerians I have met). Unfortunately I know a lot of Americans have probably never met an Iranian in person (or at least didn’t know they were Iranian). I worry that given what we see on the news those people will judge all Iranians negatively, hopefully that is not the case.
Hopefully the regime falls and both countries can resume friendly relations. I encourage all Americans to watch interviews of the average Iranian and many of them say good things about the USA and how they want to get along with us.
In fact, given the videos of Americans themselves chanting ‘death to America’ I wish we could trade those Americans for the Iranians who want to escape the regime…. Seems like a win-win lol
Much love to the Iranian secularists from Australia! The Iranians are great people.
From Saudi, I feel deeply sorry for Iranians who are smart and educated people being forced back to the Middle Ages by the Mullahs. I wish that we can help the Iranian people to take back their country.

His attacker was a 24 year-old kid living in his mother's basement with no future, no personal identity, no motivation, and no aspirations. His only identity was his religion, and here was Salman Rushdie, an atheist, a brilliant author, highly educated, highly successful, who had everything. What would be the simplest and easiest way to get instant fame and notoriety, and approval from the fanatics in his religion? Killing the man he was jealous of. It was as simple as that.
"I just didn't like him very much". Brilliant self-analysis, guy. That's as far as his thinking went. I feel sorry for his mother; but I hope he spends the rest of his life in prison.

As someone trapped in a dictatorship I can not stress enough how much freedom of thought and expression is valuable and priceless like you would never understand until you lose it. Western people seem not to appreciate how insanely lucky they are to be born in societies where they still have these freedoms. Fight for your freedoms because the rest of the world is fighting for the ideologies / theocracies that ruin their lives and the lives of their children. I wish I was in the west, I wish we had your values.
Some of us do know. I do, and I lament the censorship we also have experienced trying to wake people from their slumber. The topic has become social media Kryptonite. I'm shut down at least 3 times a week for 24 to 48 hours, just for saying words like a nation's name. I never EVER thought this day would come in the West, but here it is. In the last few years, and especially in the last 6 months, censorship is the West is the worst it has ever been.
I heard every word you said, loudly, in my heart. I really hope for your dictatorship to fall and fail. And I sincerely hope you once again can be free too.
Kindest regards from AU 🫶🇦🇺
Even in the west, it is increasingly becoming harder to speak truth to power. Freedom of speech in general is also becoming conditional upon the feelings of the recipient, because apparently offense is now regarded as something given rather than taken. I suspect this is how it starts, and autocratic rule is how it ends. I wish more people like you were here to warn us of the consequences.
Hopefully the dictatorship will end soon. I mean it has to! Biden can’t stay in office forever.
We are not entirely free here in the west, either. With that said, I do not take the degree of freedom we do have, for granted. We have a greater range to speak our minds, but the great American freedom is largely an illusion. We have the appearance of freedom. We are being censored and restricted, at an increasingly alarming pace. Many Americans feel like they are genuinely free, because they have bought into American propaganda, and indoctrination masked as education, so they have no thoughts outside of those approved by the government.
I agree, but the West is getting worse. The don't stand up for truth and will most likely lose their freedom!
I just finished reading Midnight's Children last week, with no knowledge that "Knife" existed and was soon to be published. What an absolute genius this guy is, it's obvious and undeniable. I agree. Salman Rushdie has earned that Nobel many times over.

Why because he writes thousands of pages against one religion… the only hate crime allowed against one religion & unlike antisemitics, the perpetrators are fully protected & given medals for their crimes… ??
@@sheshahayat5117 no, because he's a good writer. The Satanic Verses aren't "thousands of pages long", and he hasn't dedicated his life to besmirching Islam's name. You strike me as someone who hasn't actually read any of his work and allows others to fill your head with ideas.
Every religion out there is subject to ridicule: you'll find stereotypes of every faith in media, Western stand-up comics have been making fun of Christianity for decades, and shows like Family Guy and South Park have prospered while making fun of almost every religion. The difference is, most faiths lack a significant number of insecure fundamentalists that feel as if their Almighty needs to be protected or rescued by mere mortals.
As yourself this: If Rushdie's book truly was blasphemous enough to warrant the fatwah, why does Allah SWT still allow him to live? Has the mandate for his assassination come from above, or simply from humans like ourselves?

When Dan Brown writes a fictional story using debatable references to non canonical gospels, there are critical push back from Christians. However there's an understanding that a violent reaction goes too far because it goes against Jesus' teachings. When Rushdie writes a fictional story using debatable references in the Quran, the threat of violence from a fanatical Islamist is very real. The Charlie Hebdo tragedy was another reminder. Mr. Rushdie, I am glad that you are feeling better. Hate begets hate. As I believe that your text satanic verses was an intellectual suicide, it was also a literature that brought you fame or infamy. Your courage to challenge the world’s most populous religion was quite polarizing to say the least. My suggestion to you would be to use the knife of your words and seek redemption from those that have been polarized by you yet never lifted a knife. One criminal and the entire religion gets blamed. Could the real enemy of oneself be oneself?? We take calculated risks and we have to be careful. The whole world is not our friend. He had a dream before the attack and believes surviving it was a miracle, yet he still doesn't believe in God. So, where did the dream come from if not from something supernatural? aliens?
Surely you can answer such a simple question for yourself.
Did God save him from the attack? Dreams aren't supernatural. This man was under attack for years, likely creating the dream. Your comment is incredibly stupid.
@@gaberyanstube1 How can you explain a dream predicting the future without involving anything supernatural? What’s the normal way to understand how a dream might hint at future events? He’s an atheist, yet he took his dream so seriously that he considered canceling his plans because of it. Why would he think the dream has any validity if he doesn’t believe in the supernatural? And if someone does believe in the supernatural, wouldn’t it make sense for them to believe in God too?
@@Metarig You mentioned aliens. I think he had the dream because of aliens. You see, I believe in aliens. My parents believed in aliens and gave me books to read growing up that taught me to believe in supernatural aliens. Yup, that's exactly what happened. That's what I believe. Get it?
@@MetarigIt's a fair question but the answer is probably pretty obvious.
A. I'm sure he had many many such dreams over the years that scared him and that some of them scared him enough that he did not actually go to the planned event or at least demanded security. And
B. We all want to believe that there are untapped resources of important information yet to discover (in fact there likely are), so we are all quite willing to consider them when they are offered to us.
The fact that the only dreams we remember are those which ended up getting it right is so obvious that doesn't deserve it's own designated letter in this list.
Finally, there is the matter of what I call "religious conviction".
Religious Conviction is a claimed certitude for something nobody can actually really be CERTAIN about. Mohammed's night journey is a good example from the right, the innately equal average mathematical aptitude of different racial demographics is a good example from the left. Anyone who claims to be certain about these things has a "religious convection".
The fact that Rushdie (whose father name the family after the famous Muslim rationalist and skeptic Ibn Rushd) is open to the possibility that he is wrong about premonitions and probably pretty much everything else is a praiseworthy example of his lack of such religious conviction.
The great divide between fools and the wise they are rate or wrong about, but whether they are closed-minded or open-minded people.

I'm sure that if he received evidence of el-Buraq he would share it too. THAT'S a wise and great man.
Books and pens have been the greatest tool to survive his instinctive voice.
Saving him = saving freedom of speech
