I know in your videos, most of your commentary centers around the musicality and stuff pertaining to the actual meanings of songs only comes up occasionally. Because of that, I made a comment on your Serenity of Suffering album review video talking about this; with The Nothing, the music itself comes second to song meanings and lyrical themes. Out of Korn’s whole catalog, there is no other album where Jonathan’s state of mind was as integral to the album’s creation like it is on The Nothing. There’s a huge piece of context to keep in mind when listening to this album, and what it is, is the fact that this album was created while Jonathan was dealing with the very recent death of both his wife and his mother. The death of his wife in particular was actually something that was reported on a lot at the time, and I would actually suggest looking up a little bit of stuff about it to give you an idea of what Jonathan was dealing with. She died of an overdose and the whole situation was just really sad. It was. It was a really dark time for Jonathan. That’s part of the meaning of the title The Nothing. He was in such a low place, the way he has described it was something to the effect of like his mind was just in a void at that point. All the songs on the album are about the same thing so it really permeates the whole record. he’s said himself that this is his most personal the most personal album for him. When you hear him crying or getting emotional, it’s actually real. It’s all things to keep in mind when listening to this because it’s what really shapes the album into what it is.
And I’m glad that you noted that you were surprised how they ended this album because you expecting them to end this album with a bang. That’s good that you noticed that. On most of their albums, the last song really is more of a “finale” than just simply the last song in the track order. On most of their albums, the last song is usually like the biggest “statement” being made on the album. Which really shows how significant it is that the song is so downtrodden. It says a lot that the final statement on this album is one of Jonathan just feeling utterly defeated. I’m gonna post a quote that one review given by a well known music publication that summed it up perfectly:
_"Over atmospheric NIN-like piano and towering drums, he exposes his guilt-stricken soul in a final confessional. As the swell fades away, he weeps, "I failed, I failed." It's one of the saddest moments in their catalog, a low point that ironically elevates this album to one of their strongest statements. Korn have always excelled at pain, but with The Nothing, this is the most authentic it's ever been."_

Great comment, thank you for taking the time to write this! I will definitely look further into the backstory and creation of The Nothing. Considering how emotionally raw it sounds I can imagine that Jonathan was indeed going through a very dark place. Although it is difficult for me to pay close attention to the lyrics on first listen, just the tone of this record overall eludes to a lot of pain and darkness.

@@mollyesanborn I was kind of thinking this on your reviews of their earlier records, a big part of the mystique of Korn is how dark and traumatic some of it is but it's easy to get lost in the groove of the instrumentals and not really take in the gravity of the themes. That's why supplementary material like music videos or live performances help, but I respect your more analytical review of the music itself and don't feel bad, not everyone is wired the same way or will view a work of art the same way. You have a knack for catching cool nuances in the songwriting itself and production. Been enjoying your reviews and keep it up

  • @AltNerdCinema
    @AltNerdCinema 6 місяців тому +28

    Oh this album...
For context on the more stronger emotion on this album in comparison to the others recent albums, this album came out after the passing of two women that have been there for Davis around the time of recording; the death of his mother and his wife, both who passed away in 2018. The latter in specific was the one in Davis' life to have helped him with his demons and darkness (hence the repeated lyrics of "they are coming for me" and "go away") as since she's not around anymore, that darkness has returned to haunt Davis, once again. A dark emotional album, yet, one I believe Davis needed to get out as personal catharsis.

My mom passed away a week after this album was released. Little did I know how much it would mean to me. Musically it’s not as good as The Serenity of Suffering but lyrically it hits the spot for me, you can really feel the desperation and agony in his voice. To this day it’s a hard album for me to listen too.

@@mollyesanborn Yeah I think the whole album is based around the demons in your head that follow you when someone that close to you dies. This is a total masterpiece in every sense of the words. How much they pack into 40 minutes, the heaviness of some of the riffs (Cold), the new wave elements, the gorgeous melodies (Can Your Hear Me, This Loss), the groove (Idiosyncracy), and really evocative performances of Jonathan (the climax of H@d3r). It was the album that properly got me on board with KoRn and at this point is my clear favourite. It's completely other.

It's crazy when you think about how this, Slipknot's We Are Not Your Kind, and Tool's Fear Inoculum all came out around the same time. Korn is actually coming out with a new album next year.

Korn is at its best musically when Jonathan Davis is at his worst mentally which is a tragedy on its own, but he is among the best vocalist in all of rock (or even all of music) when it comes to portraying emotions in performance and that is such a massive factor on why an entire generation showed up to their music, and this album is full of those strong emotions. Absolute masterpiece, personally its their strongest album since Issues

Now, I have a new found appreciation for what he was able to do to finish this album. Its got everything you want from a Korn banger, it checks all the boxes. But it came out on 2019, way past Korn mainstream sucess, so its more of a fan favourite, just like this whole album. 10/10 song for me.

Great album. I listened to it a lot when it came out. It was one of my favorite albums of 2019 along with Atonement by Killswitch Engage, Shaped By Fire by As I Lay Dying, and some others. This album has some pretty good deep cuts like Gravity Of Discomfort and Ringmaster. Idiosyncrasy, Cold, You’ll Never Find Me, and Gravity Of Discomfort are some of my favorites on the album. The Nothing is the best of their more modern albums to me with Serenity being second.

This is a separate comment from my previous one because it’s unrelated, but in regards to the fact that you’re about to be on the last Korn album Requiem. As a viewer, you now being up to date feels weird because the next one is the first Korn album to have come out _after_ starting their catalogue. Out of curiosity, I went and looked at what Korn album was your most recent one at the time Requiem came out. After checking the dates, Requiem came out just a few days after you uploaded your Life Is Peachy album review video. Not that this will make any difference in what you think of that album, but when you hear Requiem it might be interesting to consider that the music you’re hearing on it was just coming out at around the same time you were doing Life Is Peachy (if you can recall anything about that moment in time, that is). Or that the music on it was brand new at the time of reviewing the Follow The Leader album.

I was a casual fan of korn until I found this album. I was going through some of the toighest times of my life. Almost committing suicide. I thought I was going crazy until I found this album. Hearing the heavyness and pain in Jonathans singing really made me feel sane. This album will always be one of my faves.

The Nothing is an awesome album, but whenever a newer Korn song pops into my head that's been subconsciously memorized, that just flows, is a groovy brain worm, it's always a song from the albums before or after this one. Either it's just a personal connection or the songs from Serenity.. or Requiem are just catchier. My favorite on this album : This Loss.

I can see a lot of comments describing the emotional situation at the time of writing this album so I won't repeat it, but it's definitely worth a second listen if you have time now that you have the backstory - the lyrics are gut-wrenching at times.
For me, as with Daddy and many other tracks on their early albums, the ability to share such raw emotion and pain is what makes KoRn stand out. They have a unique sound/style and JD has a very unique vocal delivery, but it's this side of KoRn that makes them really special. There just aren't that many people who open up and share all of that to everyone, it's taboo and being given the 'opportunity' to peer behind the veil is something many fans are grateful for.
After Requiem (and maybe JD's solo album, which doesn't hit like KoRn, prepare yourself for that if you listen to it - and it was written over a long period of time), I would suggest finding a collection of their B-sides/bonus tracks that you've missed out on doing the US studio albums (international albums often have a couple extra tracks). There are some popular compilations on youtube you can find and they're certainly worth listening too, some great tracks in there. I'm sure you'll get some suggestions below.
You're not done with KoRn yet 🙂
Thanks for the reaction(s)... been looking forward to this one for some time.

No wonder this record has such a dark and emotional quality to it, that despair really comes through in Jonathan's voice. I like Serenity because I could hear moments that sound like Untouchables and Take a look in the Mirror especially in the choruses. The Nothing is what I think See you on the other side would have been if Brian never left. I also didn't realize how much this album naturally resembles their first two releases. They tried to recapture that magic on Remember who you are, but I think it sounds way too forced on that release. The Nothing is amazing how it is able to sound like an O.G. Korn album. The band brought back the souls of their first five releases on here. Honestly to me, I see The Nothing as (Issues pt. II)
