My understanding of the pbf was that it was issued to border patrol guards and was mainly for tear gas which would explain the cheek filter choice. Having seen the rifles used they have a crook style stock which dips down so you can sight the rifle. There's also the upside of the AK using open sights which are easy to sight through a vizor/ respirator. I have also seen a helmet that rests on the top of the filters with a vizor that folds down to cover everything above the lips. I could be wrong but this seems to be the most likely reason to me.
Well actually the front facing flat lenses of the PBF, ShMS and PMG-1 means that you can use these masks well with scopes regardless, not just open sights.
I have two of these (1978 and 1981) but they are, I guess different generations of the kit: different exhale valve design and on one of them, the one from 78, seems to have slightly narrower eye lenses. I do really love the aesthetic design of these masks, practicality wise though....

On the topic of installed cheek filters expiring due to being constantly exposed to air I recently picked up an East German issued M10M which came in a plastic bag, not new, sealed but fully set up with cheek filters installed, the top of the bag sealed by twisting it and attaching a small plastic twist lock. I'm assuming this was to allow the mask to be set up, the hassle of inserting the filters complete and then store it in a manner where they'd stay usable for some time. More additional faffing around due to the failings of the design.
Yeah similarly the US was meant to develop air tight bags for the M17 but they were never issued with the mask for the majority of the time it was in service.
Good video I also think its likely Those filters Contain asbestos I forget their designation and I herd people mention the Russian used asbestos till early 2000s. Also Russia makes asbestos today.
Yeah Russia doesn't give a shit about asbestos, they are one of the worlds biggest miners of it, supposedly modern Russian filters are safe but that's about it.
I'm planning on getting a PBF this Christmas, so to keep it free from asbestos, do I only have to safely remove the filters and clean out the mask? Or is there more to keeping a PBF asbestos free? (I am new to owning older cheek filter masks.)
So is are the filters unremovable, cause it would suck to not be able to wear certain masks that are comfortable and good looking but have asbestos in the filters.
Gotta get a PBF at some point, but for the life of me can't get one for a reasonable price, mostly because they don't show up within the UK market that often, lots of Lithuanian and German sellers though, but the P&P is ludicrous.
Im learning about how 40 millimeter masks work and might be able to eventually be able to make the big cheeks smaller and use 40 millimeter (ive takin my m40a1 apart to an extent where i can put it together in my sleep)
So are there other filters for this mask that do not contain asbestos? I'm new to the gas mask world. I think this mask looks great and I would love to go hunt for one, but if there is no asbestos free option, I don't see the point.
Thanks for the video I was thinking about buying one and was not really sure about the filters since its not confirmed they are asbestos free and you Said they most likely do have asbestos I will skip on the mask until any confirmation
Hey, can you do a video on how to wash it? I'm having one delivered this week, and I'm afraid of washing out the talc and damaging the voice diaphram / etc. Tahnks!

Hey, I got a question. But first of all, I have to say your videos are amazing and I love them. So the question is: I'm going to Berlin soon and I heared they sell gasmasks at Checkpoint Charlie. So the problem is, they sell russian masks like the GP-5. Are this real, old gasmasks or replicas? I mean it wouldn't be allowed to sell them to tourists if they contain asbestos right? I doubt they are replicas, most likely real GP-5s due to the numbers made, as for asbestos, GP-5s are sold everywhere, nobody bothers enforcing asbestos bans when it comes to gas mask filters.

could i get a bunch of pre filters and make them the size and shape of the filter.... and make them thicker and tape or glue them together.... would that make the mask not look deflated and look right?
There are no prop filters or safe filters for the PBF but you could always take the filters out and put a bit of paper or card with holes in inside the cheeks for it to keep the shape.
@@Weaponsandstuff93 Thank you! I'm just using it as a prop for a short film and this is what I was looking for. If I was looking to really protect myself though would an Israeli civilian mask be good?
