I’ve been using a GP-5 filter for about two summers for practical use… At the time that I bought it I had no idea that filters had asbestos, had it not been for your videos on the matter, I would still be using it. Thank you my friend for this helpful insight and solution
Weaponsandstuff93 I’ve been using it to go into an unventilated shed to put chlorine in a pool philter. Also, as far as practical use gas masks go, you know one with mobility, sight, and durability, what would you recommend?
I followed this advice and filled the top of the canister with a few pads, No way any asbestos can get through. I did it so I can wear the mask with filter for whatever reason. Also my filters are "newer" so they don't have any rattling and can't smell anything through them so if I truly had to use it in a serious situation I wouldn't hesitate.
I know their are videos around the web showing people removing asbestos parts and replacing them but at the sametime that requires cutting open the canister its self....but i wanna say from teh bottom of my heart THANK YOU for making this video because sad to say i dont have the money to buy any nato canisters...believe me i wish i did but saddly i cant due to money troubles so once again THANK YOU YA CLEVER BRIT
While I rarely use my mask, I'll definitely make sure to do this! Thanks for the video. I've been looking for an easy way to make my mask safer for casual use.
Bought a MC-1 cuz I gotta work through the virus. Once the new canister I bought gets old I'll keep it on for decoration and cut up my n95 stuff for it. I could probably make a couple disks per cotton mask and either double up on them or get two days out of one mask before having to sanitize them again. Thanks for making this video, it saved me having to buy some obnoxious 3M adapter and new filters for the thing.
I'd say additionally if using hose could put one more filter on the other end for extra safety I'd say, for cosplay best is to have only canister/filter without anything inside basically empty can, but cool method, definitely worth to remember.
Hello Friend. Thank you for all of your informative videos that you've made so far, as I have watched most of your gas mask related videos. I just wanted to mention that according to data that I had gathered by checking 3Ms own website, and also companies that actually work on removing Asbestos insulation from old houses, the go to filter is 3M P100, which is graded for filtering Asbestos and Lead. The one which you're using might not be the safest option to pick up and use. P100 is the highest respiratory level protection that we can get, and a P100 graded particular filter blocks 99.9% of particles.
Weaponsandstuff93 Thanks for the response mate, good to know that. It's kind of confusing with companies use different names for same type of standards/protection in the US and EU. And you are right, I had been checking for those infos in American sites. I'm sorry for the comment that I sent, you are more informed.
No problem, it's an easy mistake to make, I like the P1-3 system as it's part of the ABEK system which is becoming a widely adopted system for filters, the higher the number the better the protection that section it offers, so each letter means the filter blocks/filters a certain threat and then a higher number means the filter does it better So an A1P2 filter is not as good as an A2P3 filter. It's also nice having colour coded filters.
It'd be nice if there was a company that made ComBloc-looking cover/clip-on shell type things that would make one of the safe Polish GOST threaded filters look externally like the old surplus ones. Though idk if there's enough of a market there to really merit someone doing such a thing.
So if this idea were to actually block out asbestos effectively, about how long would you have theoretically before you have to replace out the filter piece before it becomes useless?
Totally depends how much the filter leaks, if the filter doesn't leak never, if the filter leaks then it will clog fairly fast, but that stuff would have gone into your lungs.
Weaponsandstuff93 interesting. So in theory would it be possible to “use up” all the asbestos within the filter simply by using this improvised method and constantly breathing through it whilst replacing the small filters when necessary? And by “use up”, I mean the original soviet filter is now asbestos free?
I don't think any 40mm NATO filter that has been made in the last 60 years has contained asbestos, only 40mm NATO I know of that contained asbestos was the giant 40mm filters the M51 originally took.
Good idea if you want to use the filter, you could always double up or do both ends of the tube, or do the tube method and sticking them in the filter hole for maximum protection, that's if you can still breathe through it with that many, i have no idea.
Yeah you could do it but the breathing resistance would get harder, I found when I did my test video with the mask, the big filter combined with the P3 insert made the air resistance quite challenging to actually breath with, but yeah a smaller filter with two P3 discs on either side of the hose would work well.
I haven't heard of anyone making prop filters. That would be pretty good to do, build prop filters to fit gas masks, so you can use them and have the mask look genuine.
Dude, fantastic video but I gotta know. Would multiple P3 cotton filters make it safer? (Like putting it in the bottom and the top of the rubber hose for example) Fantastic video as always!
I just used wet wipes, my filter doesn’t have leakage or damage, i shoved in wet wipes, breathed through it for 20 mins and the wipe was clean after i took a look at it. as long as your filter doesn’t look like it’s been in shrek’s silo for 3 decades you should be fine using wet wipes in there
really cool idea, but I doubt I'll ever use it. I'm more likely to just tape the hose to the inside of the bag or something similar. would it work for costumery if you took filters out of an american M17 and put them in a soviet PBF?
Say I have a question, in the video here, you say that a P3 filter is required to block aspestos. Doing a little searching on amazon, I have not been able to find p3 filters like the one in the video. Instead there are these P95 filters. I don't think these have the same level of protection as the P3 but can anyone confirm? Also, where should I buy these filters from?
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly! I've seen the P100s out here, but the ones I have seen are the pink circular filters. I'll go for those then. Been binge watching a lot of your videos lately. Great information and very entertaining!
For my GP-5 and it's included filter i printed a bypass and took took the rubber gasket from the cap of the filter put it in the bypass to make sure it was an air tight seal as the filter was broken and i just screwed it in there is a little bit of black but thats fine i just like the weight and look
Cool idea with the 3m filters as when buying soviet masks with asbestos filter coming with the mask , people do t really want to buy another filter for the mask
Hey weaponsandstuff93, great videos. I have a question for you. A while back I bought a gp5 filter off the internet and used it blow cigarette smoke into to mask the smell. Alright, question time. -How risky do you think this is? -How long would those particulate filters take to get worn out? -How much worse is the breathing resistance? -What does it feel like trying to move around in a rubber NBC suit? - Have you ever scare pranked anyone before? If so, how did it go?
Not very risky at all, P3 filters are used by asbestos removers. Depends on how much the filter leaks, they won't become compromised though, it will just get harder to breath until you decide to replace them. Higher than normal but it depends a lot on the filter as well, using it with a GP-5 filter won't be as bad as an EO-14 or EO-16.
I've been wondering for awhile and it's probably a dumb question as if it where so easy someone would of done so already. But what if you put Teflon tape (the white tape you use to prevent old faucets and stuff to stop leaking) on a 40MM NATO standard filter and put it in an old Warsaw gas mask? Like a gp-5. Would that work?
I'm not sure if that would block the screws or not, I might experiment with rubber washers at some point to see if I can get an air-tight seal that way.
Weaponsandstuff93 oh okay cool, I was thinking if there was some type of way to do that it would be very cool if it worked as a very last ditch last resort type of deal. Hopefully you can pull it off would be interesting to see, keep rocking on man and thanks for the reply.
Do you think that it's really that big of a deal to use the filters that only have 1-3% asbestos in them with a gp-5? Because with a gp-5 your face isn't really pressed directly against the filter like with a M40 so the chances of that fiber going directly into your face is rather low, right? Not really sure how asbestos behaves, I assume it floats around like common dust.
I was just planning on filling my filters with water and dumping out whatever's in thete into the bin and replacing the insides but now I don't need to!
Where do you buy your masks at? I never know where to get gas masks (especially the vintage Russian style like in this video, those are my favorite) that actually work/ are safe to use
why no one makes dummy versions of those filters for cosplay und stuff? i want to make some pictures with a mask... is there any useable filter to put on that looks not out of place?
Also, Is the part where the hose fits is that safe, Because now I'm getting a bit paranoid about the hose part. Also I am going to get a specialist to remove the asbestos from the canister
Guys, I figure you know more about this than I do... Do you believe there is any way that a gasmask with a GP-5 filter could effectively be used today? Or has it truly expired on any meaningful service? Thanks loads for any answer in advance! (in case you're wondering, I don't own any of this stuff but I am writing a piece about it - I figured that a GP-5 is too old to function in this day, but I want to be sure)
The mask could be okay if it has been stored well, I still have some working WW2 masks, but the filter is long since expired and potentially dangerous, a GP-5 with a modern filter that fits it, is a far safer bet.
I understand that storing dark, cool and without exposure to oxygen would help preserve, but what are the chances of doing that for 30+ years? What material are your WWII masks if I may ask?
There is a more easier eay and safer if you just want the look put tape on the filter and open the exhale hole so you inhale thru that aswell and the filter is just there for the look
I still wouldn't trust those filters even with the particulate filter wedged in the intake/hose. Thats just me though. Anyways, I'll be looking forward to the SHM-41 video, especially the test.
There's nothing poisonous in them, just asbestos and charcoal, if that comes loose they get blocked on the P3 filter, it's simple science. But fair enough, NATO masks are better anyway.
a charcoal dust can get as small as 15 microns, while an n95 filter can protect from particles as small as .3 microns and a p3 filter can protect from particles as small as .2 microns. You're definitely fine either way
i have been looking at SA 10,s and and all these fancy top end masks but i am gradually thinking that maybe the cheap soviet hood mask is best it all depends if i can find a modern filter for it
Is it safe to remove the plugs from a GP-5 filter? What I mean is will it spew asbestos fibers or charcoal if you take off the caps from the top and bottom?
What I would do is cut the bottom off take everything out so it’s hollow and clean it out then somehow put the bottom part back on or just keep the bottom off
Don't use a SCBA, that's very risky unless you have SCBA training, use a P3 filter on a mask, do it outside and make sure you have an asbestos disposal bag for the filters contents, never throw asbestos in a normal bin.
Stronk Slav Stalin FD1917 yes, I mean for cosplay, you don’t have the asbestos and the weight of the filter, for cosplay you do not need filtering capabilities.
I used the same GP-5 filter and mask for like 10 mins before knowing that it was dangerous, am I at risk? Should I go get a check up? I’ll use this method from now on but idk if I should be worried

Yes but unless you do it following very strict guidelines it risks releasing the asbestos everywhere.
Weaponsandstuff93 ok thanks
You'd need to pretty much fill it with water to eliminate the fibre becoming airborne and carry out the task in an open bin liner also wet
It follows the airflow, so when you inhale if it comes loose it will get into your lungs.
I was just planning on filling my filters with water and dumping out whatever's in thete into the bin and replacing the insides but now I don't need to!
Where do you buy your masks at? I never know where to get gas masks (especially the vintage Russian style like in this video, those are my favorite) that actually work/ are safe to use
eBay
Weaponsandstuff93 sweet thanks for the reply
Where can I get these filter pads that you use? I cannot find them anywhere.
where are you at? I might be able to help
why no one makes dummy versions of those filters for cosplay und stuff? i want to make some pictures with a mask... is there any useable filter to put on that looks not out of place?
I just got my gp5 today, washed it and already threw the filter away, im getting a good filter soon.
Throwing the filter away is illegal...
Is it illegal in the usa?
I will get it out of the trash, oops
You could get a p3 cotton half-mask and wear the gasmask over it.
That won't make an air tight seal.
Weaponsandstuff93 if your useing for prop purpources it doesnt matter
Also, Is the part where the hose fits is that safe, Because now I'm getting a bit paranoid about the hose part. Also I am going to get a specialist to remove the asbestos from the canister
If you mean can you put the P3 pad there yes
I have a gp-5 gas mask with the original filter, its from 80s and i obviously no using it, but have it like in a shelf is toxic?
Is it sealed? Then yes
If not then I can't say for sure, as long as you don't disturb it, it shouldn't be an issue
And I mean the mask itself, I understand old filters would be a no-go and a possible hazard of themselves.
Do you have a link for that black filter that just looks like the gp5 filter but is save
Search for the FP5 filter
How to do that on a regular GP-5 filter without a hose? Do I put the P3 inside the mask or the filter?
There is a more easier eay and safer if you just want the look put tape on the filter and open the exhale hole so you inhale thru that aswell and the filter is just there for the look
I still wouldn't trust those filters even with the particulate filter wedged in the intake/hose. Thats just me though. Anyways, I'll be looking forward to the SHM-41 video, especially the test.
There's nothing poisonous in them, just asbestos and charcoal, if that comes loose they get blocked on the P3 filter, it's simple science.
But fair enough, NATO masks are better anyway.
I know, but I'm just saying that personally I wouldn't trust it. Thats all.
The funny thing is in the gp5 Filter is no Asbest
So have you noticed anything wrong in the past 2 years after trying this method?
Do you need a P3 filter if you’re just worried about charcoal? Or will that be stopped by an N95 filter?
a charcoal dust can get as small as 15 microns, while an n95 filter can protect from particles as small as .3 microns and a p3 filter can protect from particles as small as .2 microns. You're definitely fine either way
@@mr.commonsense Sounds good, thanks
imo, for cosplay you could buy the old green covers that are still often used to go over the filter and just shove a nato filter on under it
Yeah that would also work.
i have been looking at SA 10,s and and all these fancy top end masks but i am gradually thinking that maybe the cheap soviet hood mask is best it all depends if i can find a modern filter for it
old commie filters...the technical term.
great vid as usual :)
Cheers
Is it safe to remove the plugs from a GP-5 filter? What I mean is will it spew asbestos fibers or charcoal if you take off the caps from the top and bottom?
As long as the inside isn't falling apart it's safe to do so.
@@Weaponsandstuff93 how can I tell?
You can't without opening it.
I tend to be very cautious. Do they make adaptors for the GP5 so NATO filters can be used?
People 3D print them, no idea how good they are.
Where would I find a p3 cotton filter? Anywhere I could buy it?
On Amazon or Ebay you can get 3M filter pads, get those and cut them to size
What I would do is cut the bottom off take everything out so it’s hollow and clean it out then somehow put the bottom part back on or just keep the bottom off
Good luck doing that properly, unless you have a clean room and everything else you just risk contaminating everything with asbestos.
I like how he said, "Commie filters"
What’s that one polish filter that people recommended for soviet masks?
FP-5 filter.
my filter is from 1992. do you think it would be ok to use the filter without any modifications should i not risk it?
Don't use it.
Nice, but still, you can cut open the filter and remove everything, if you just want it for cosplay.
High chance of asbestos contamination doing that.
uk airsoft ok, if I would wear a self contained breathing apparatus and do it outside, would it be safe?
Don't use a SCBA, that's very risky unless you have SCBA training, use a P3 filter on a mask, do it outside and make sure you have an asbestos disposal bag for the filters contents, never throw asbestos in a normal bin.
Weaponsandstuff93 ok, i was just wondering, probably won’t do that anyways.
If you only used it for 10 minutes I wouldn't worry about it.
