It's funny actually, the majority of the playerbase were actually happy with Guthans NMZ. Guthans sets were what, 20m nearly? They had to make the integrity change because they knew that if they polled the removal of splashers/guthans nmz then it would definitely fail. It was such a sad time for the game for myself and I really considered quitting because until the integrity change it really felt like the game was going to shit very, very quickly.
The biggest modern problem with NMZ is that players get stuck in an infinite loop of NMZ + Burnout, all they do in the game is NMZ and then burn out as so unengaging and in this weird easy/optimal afk niche for Melee stats
I must admit, nmz was the way I got 99 attack, and I did it the afk method. It's so nice to only have to click once every 20 minutes for 6 hours. I was able to get ~750k-1m XP a day, completely afk.
I got 99 in all melee stats thanks to NMZ. Never would’ve done it otherwise. Now I get to play parts of the game i never thought I’d get to experience and work on getting the rest of my 99s the hard way.
Honestly anyone that didn't try the easy nmz thing either back then A. Didnt know how to B. Couldn't afford Guthans (It did get very expensive back then) C. Were already maxed D. Enjoyed c&b torture
I will never understand how Jagex made Runescape, which is such a great game, while being such complete morons and incompetent clowns. The only answer is that the foundation was great and the original devs were really good, and then the people who came after only had to try and not mess it up (which they did countless times).
Overall yeah, the brothers do regret giving up the shares of the game so jagex had full control. So the game subtly had more corporate interests imparted into it. More mainstream. Easier user experiance. Etc. Catch whats popular. Oh well. Might make it less popular but will make it last longer ironically. At least jagex made a shame corner and put osrs and some black sheep devs into it for the hardcore fans
I feel like I dislike NMZ not because it's boring, but because it completely invalidates making progress in combat levels when you can literally just afk in NMZ to do the same. If this wasn't bad enough, important unlocks like the slayer helm imbue are locked behind it which literally just forces new players to run NMZ afk for like 8 hours to unlock everything
Nightmare zone is basically a slightly buffed version of rock crabs back in the day. You should be doing slayer for your levels instead though as you get way better loot and slayer XP.
the best solution to "fix" nmz is just to add better melee bosses. bosses like vorkath and muspah are insane range xp for the boosted damage or xp rates respectively while also making bank, a melee equivalent (or even just boosting xp rates on bosses like sire) would make a huge difference in making afk nmz a less desirable activity
Given the tools, manpower, and philosophy of OSRS at the time, NMZ came out about as good as it could ever be. Except for no filtering bosses and the rune duplication exploit, it was pretty much released without incident and well liked. I don't remember people smuggling combat boosts, minigame specific items, or absorption effects like would happen in LMS or BA. Like most people, I think it's... bad, but it's so ingrained into OSRS that I can hardly imagine a version where NMZ hadn't been made. Yeah you could train through slayer and regular pvm, but would we be using swamp crabs because ammonite and sand crabs were too stuffed, and would Guthans still be 10m+ because you had to train at bandits? I certainly think having an instanced area where you can train with minimal attention is convenient, and definitely speeds accounts to content that they're locked out of based on pure stats. But it's just so fugly, imbues are such an awkward concept, and herb boxes are dumb. It's an awkward minigame but it provides easiest (not fastest) source of imbues and combat XP. While I think it was a misguided effort and desperately needs a second look, I would be a little sad if it was removed.
I think they should both really lean into the nightmare element and make it a learning tool to help newer players learn bossing mechanics. Have powered up "Nightmare" versions of the quest bosses that you fight more like a raid boss or the non-quest versions of bosses. Like if you want to farm Vorkath then Nightmare Elvarg/Vorkath will be a safe way to learn similar mechanics. Add EXP rewards similar to Pest Control or Scurrius' Spine and remove the AFK nature of it, or at least weaken it, and you'd have a much more interesting game mode with some great uses. I think it would be appreciated if it stayed the best way to level combat stats but it was much more interactive and skillful. Having players walking away with high level stats quickly and a better idea and confidence to put them to use.
They should change the nightmare zone KBD lair for the fully black room from the Seren fight room. I feel like it would be way better with you being asleep and stuff.
Great video, there was one major event from nmz that also went horribly wrong which you forgot to include. Rune smuggling. There were a few players who figured out they can smuggle the runes from nmz through, I believe the rune pouch somehow, they ended up crashing some rune prices and making billions before anyone even knew what happened.
I feel like NMZ would of done best with soloing specific boss rotations as challenges. Each challenge would be associated with a different imbue. After every challenge is completed you can then unlock the afk version for generic rewards.
just a heads up about the sponsor Hello Fresh has a poor busy model where they offer you all this free shipping and discounted meals, but once your coupons are over and you have to pay full price for the meals you cant just cancel you end up having to pay for 2 shipments at full price... I actually have tried it because it was good pricing and good food with the coupons but once our discounted meals came to an end we tried to cancel like any other normal person would but they actually send you the food and charge your credit card full price after cancelling. I called and got the 2nd shipment cancelled before wasting on grocery money but the lady actually stated it its in the fine print and I had to haggle with her to even refund my money so just watch out. idk why the sponsor creators aren't telling you this I wish id known before wasting money
I find it hilarious that the team polled the NMZ fixes. It reminded me a ton of the Blowpipe nerf where people were mad it wasn't polled. No way it would get a 75% vote yes for nerfing the 3.5M mingun that was either BiS or just marginally behind the TBow for almost every boss.
@@FirestormDDash It was for a while. The OSRS team nerfed it about 2 years ago because it was literally too powerful to slot in anything between it and the Twisted Bow without it being a super gimicky weapon. It's still pretty good but not close to bis anymore with the introduction of new range weapons.
@@TylerMcVeigh1 i mention it, since in rs3, using it as a cosmetic override has some weird interaction making the damage calculate at the start rather then end of a tick. So no dps difference but getting damage to hit first is BIS for sure. And cosmetic means you can still use the strongest weapons. Lol. Still gimmicky I guess.
@@TylerMcVeigh1oly shit I think this is the first time I've seen an OSRS only player not implode upon hearing RS3 mentioned. I swear you'd have better luck becoming king of the pirates than you would being OSRS players to not bash RS3 anytime it is mentioned.
I liked the Pre evolution of combat Tower in the desert, where you would fight the different quest bosses while you climb the tower. They should add something similar in OSRS but better. That kuraluum fight pits sounded promising but nothing ever happened of it.
14:50 This information is incorrect, the 6 hour log out limit did exist. But there wasn't the thing where you have to interact with the game every 20 minutes, so you could only AFK for 6 hours max. This goes for both NMZ and splashing because both are combat related.
You could actually go past the 6 hour timer prior to February 13th 2014 if you were in combat. Here's the excerpt from when they changed it, "The log out timer will now kick you from the game if you have been logged in for 6 hours whether or not you are in combat."
The 6 hour log still worked back in the day. The issue was that if you were in combat you wouldn’t get 5 minute logged so you would stay in NMZ for 6 hours. Now if you don’t click for 5mins while in combat your char will stop attacking and eventually log out . But the 6 hour log has ALWAYS existed and there is no way around it
gotta love playerbases sometimes "how dare you gatekeep the unique stuff to a single thing, but dont you dare make it available to get anywhere else, otherwise why have the content in the first place"
I don't personally like NMZ being the *best XP method*, because the way alot of the older training method worked, was that you could do Rock Crabs for more AFK, slower XP (or Bandits for more riskier training and XP), or you could get more XP by training it more actively with methods like Experiments or others. NMZ being the most AFK, the laziest and also efficient way to train combat I think ruins the balance, and I don't think "people are adults now and no longer kids" is really that good of an excuse, if there were kids and adults back then as well. It's more so the way the game is balanced around those things. Like including your point with the devaluing of low level moneymaking with herblore secondaries.
Good times. I remember when boosting in NMZ was a thing. Me and a friend made a boosting account and you could make super good money sitting there being a booster.
Nmz is the reason I’m max combat and I’m so happy it was added, it still takes a considerable amount of time and dedication to get to 99. But I guarantee you I would have never hit 99 with out it.
Nah people did the bandi method with guthans before nmz. It was just a superior version of the bandit camp method since you can use absorb pots with dharoks instead of guthans or pray pot method at the bandits
I may be biased (I have a degree economics) but the Jaxgex/RS game developers/team might benefit from having an economist their ranks as I have watched numerous of your videos, and they have created an economic crisis more than once through their updates. Which like to me a couple of times it would’ve been painfully obvious it would’ve occurred other times you can’t predict it, It’s actually kind of funny and quite fascinating.
I just did like 5 hours of nmz for imbues, only to find out you can do lms or pvp arena for imbue scrolls. I regret taking a break and not knowing the alternatives XD Edit: oh soulwars too
Crystal halberding Nechryaels in the Kourend Catacombs is significantly better experience than NMZ, but I get your point. NMZ is effectively zero time, which is why it's so strong.
I love mod ash, he helped me get my account back in 2018, saw how genuine he was in the dev cast and figured he was my best bet, straight out told me to apply for help even if it warned me since I had been scared away by the warning, boom it was back from the phillipines. D:
Nmz is DANK. I'm a new old player. Played as a child. Now I have 99atk and str. Almost def and I'm having the time of my life on runescape. All made possible by nmz
Lmfao that kid "yesss acient magicks!" I feel you kid DT was the hardest quest i ever finished on my originat RS account as a kid 15 years ago or more.
You make a good point, but realistically I don't think anybody saw OSRS becoming as popular as it is, they probably thought it was going to be a nostalgia hype that would die after 6 months, with no updates it would have died years ago.
I have always enjoyed NMZ, I like it for training combat and its fun to re fight old bosses, that's just me though I have zero issues with it being the best place to train.
I get that people say it invalidates the true 99 capers before NMZ came out but let's be honest.. we don't look at 99s anymore, the game has came out for too long. I understand that you can afk 20 mins at a time to get the skill level you need, but it really ruins the whole experience as well. You can't compare a grind on drags for example with afking at NMZ or crabs. You're definitely going to enjoy the dragon leveling more, especially with the drops. But not all have the time, so that's why crabs kinda exist too. Either NMZ or crabs, choose your poison lmao.
If not for nightmare zone I wouldn’t have got 99 melee stats lol. There’s no difference between someone leveling up thru fighting monsters or me fighting bosses. If you want to take the long route go ahead, but you don’t need to make me take that route with you.
New players: Please do not just NMZ your combat just grind slayer, im begging you it's way more fun The only friend I had that played OS was insistent I grinding my combat in NMZ. I maxed str and took a long break. I'm playing again and absolutely regret it
I agree feels like you're gaining less when you just grind out for max. I've acquired 200 days in game time over the years but still haven't even hit 2k total.
I actually really enjoyed levelling slayer early tbh. I think people confuse what is efficient with what is fun for new players. Slayer at least makes you enter new environments and learn about the game as a whole, whereas training combat on sand crabs or nmz is just mind numbing
I havnt played since tears of guthix was new content. I love NMZ just started playing a few months ago again after so many years. I did plenty of slayer but for def afk exp NMZ has beena blessing
It was the team's first foray into design, working with the very limited resources they had at hand. For that, what they made is commendable. That said, it does look like something you'd see in MOPARscape. It's also *still* the gold standard for afk training. It also makes the bosses and other content somehow feel less... Special. It kills the sense of place and time that is so core to osrs identity. It also feels like it detaches you from all of the other skills in the game that intersect with combat and herblore. I really think it should be retired. It has no place in a game with a future. Modern players forget that this game was supposed to be abandoned within a year or two.
This shows how polling can be a failure. People on average will vote for personal gain, every single time. Sometimes you can't poll changes and need to just go. That's one of the biggest problems with early osrs tbh, so many ideas scrapped because of the polling system. By all means use the community for suggestions and feedback but the community can not develop a game, they will always vote on what gives them the most power or prevents other people from reaching the same level of power. Rather than voting for extending the longevity of the game Still waiting for them to basically remove run energy from the game. Lots of community discussions and failed polls. Just delete it like they did with RS3.
Quick suggestion, I'm not sure if it's because I'm on mobile. But your video suggestion on the right hand side only lasts for less then a second. I had to rewind 4 times to watch your party hat video haha
wait is this still a thing? i have never heard about any of this, well then again, its been a bit since i played. but still! i might join again if this is the case

@@sivraj01171 i get that. Visually too. But they are releasing old overrides all the time to make at least your character look rs2. Not many players know.
Pest control use to be the best xp in the game back in 06 when it didn't have shields ;)
I got all my imbues from soul wars. Its quicker imo
@@MilitaryHistory2011
He most likely meant before Soul Wars was introduced, NMZ was your only method for a long while there to get those things.
I play like it's 2006 most of the time
This is why my main account as no imbues. I'd rather do active things than sit in NMZ.
@@thecaybob1 how long would it take anyway
Nightmare zone is basically a slightly buffed version of rock crabs back in the day.
You should be doing slayer for your levels instead though as you get way better loot and slayer XP.
100% agree with you. Not many have the time to sit and pay attention though. Nmz is easy on mobile while at work
Image "training" you melee stats in NMZ, what a waste..
@@azoniarnl3362when ur building over 3 lvl 120s I ain't doing slayer lol
13:55 i need to know where that clip is from lmaoo
YESS ANCIENT MAGICKS!
the best solution to "fix" nmz is just to add better melee bosses. bosses like vorkath and muspah are insane range xp for the boosted damage or xp rates respectively while also making bank, a melee equivalent (or even just boosting xp rates on bosses like sire) would make a huge difference in making afk nmz a less desirable activity
Can't believe this shit is still in the game all these years later. Just afk and get 99 combat like it's nothing
15:25s is that mod matt k going to sleep in front of his alarm clock?
Having players walking away with high level stats quickly and a better idea and confidence to put them to use.
this is the greatest channel and I'm not even a huge runescape fan
Thank you!!
A scam bot to pretent to be a booster is just being an asshole for no reason lol. It would be just as easy for the bot to open up a dream for them.
The middle mouse button poll failing made me literally quit the game for 5 years
The game theory jump scare really got me. 😅
Watching this while currently in NMZ
The location of Nightmare Zone being for tax evasion is a bit of lore I didnt know I needed.
You really can't imagine why people being paid to advertise something don't tell you about its pitfalls? You sweet, sweet summer child
Wait the blowpipe is considered near bis in osrs too? Thats funny.
@@FirestormDDash Ah okay! I didn't know that! Always interesting to see how different the two games are.
@@TylerMcVeigh1oly shit I think this is the first time I've seen an OSRS only player not implode upon hearing RS3 mentioned.
I swear you'd have better luck becoming king of the pirates than you would being OSRS players to not bash RS3 anytime it is mentioned.
I remember playing guthix in 07 is this in reference to osrs not rs2?
13:58 Yo respect to that kid for doing desert treasure as a kid.
I liked the Pre evolution of combat Tower in the desert, where you would fight the different quest bosses while you climb the tower. They should add something similar in OSRS but better.
That kuraluum fight pits sounded promising but nothing ever happened of it.
I'm currently working on 200m strength there. I maxed my melee's there in 2018 and honestly without it I probably wouldn't have.
Just came across your videos so happy I have....much love from new zealand homie keep the content up subs are coming your way!!!!!!
Thank you so much!!
Where is the clip about the kid getting ancients from?
I remember those days! I used NMZ to get max combat with Slayer. I never abused it, would just do proselyte with a whip/ss!
Splashing or safespotting isn't "in combat", I think the way it worked prior was you only got the gamer log if you weren't in combat
The 6 hour log still worked back in the day. The issue was that if you were in combat you wouldn’t get 5 minute logged so you would stay in NMZ for 6 hours.
Now if you don’t click for 5mins while in combat your char will stop attacking and eventually log out . But the 6 hour log has ALWAYS existed and there is no way around it
Training combat through NMZ often leads to excessive bullying in most ccs
Why would you train combat outside of slayer
Because slayer is a waste
Thanks for these videos the nostalgia is incredible
Great video bro 😊
gotta love playerbases sometimes "how dare you gatekeep the unique stuff to a single thing, but dont you dare make it available to get anywhere else, otherwise why have the content in the first place"
Its the best training method in melee but still i enjoy more the Slayer/melee range mage training
I really like your thumbnails - they have a lot of personality. I immediately click on your videos
I just started playing RuneScape and was happy to learn so much history behind this game based off your videos
*RuneScape old school
I may be biased (I have a degree economics) but the Jaxgex/RS game developers/team might benefit from having an economist their ranks as I have watched numerous of your videos, and they have created an economic crisis more than once through their updates. Which like to me a couple of times it would’ve been painfully obvious it would’ve occurred other times you can’t predict it, It’s actually kind of funny and quite fascinating.

But Sir Amik Varze is fine?
when it first came out, getting to put on a set of guthans and 6 hour whilst you sleep was just perfection. shit exp but perfection lol.
I don't even play runescape but these history vids on it are quit entertaining somehow to me 😂
I just did like 5 hours of nmz for imbues, only to find out you can do lms or pvp arena for imbue scrolls. I regret taking a break and not knowing the alternatives XD
Edit: oh soulwars too
I remember logging into runeskape back in middle school and thought it was trash. But these videos are addicting
thanks to hello fresh for shoving an ad down my throat despite me paying for no ads. Really makes me want thier product.... NO thx
Dammn I totally forgot about NMZ services. So weird to see it again after almost 10 years
As someone who’s played OSRS on and off for 20 years and never maxed a skill, I’m really bummed I was AWOL during this lol
Nmz is DANK. I'm a new old player. Played as a child. Now I have 99atk and str. Almost def and I'm having the time of my life on runescape. All made possible by nmz
Lmfao that kid "yesss acient magicks!"
I feel you kid DT was the hardest quest i ever finished on my originat RS account as a kid 15 years ago or more.
warding failing polls killed what little hope i had left for the rs community
I still don't understand why they added new content to the game, I thought they were supposed to keep it classic, no updates just fixes... like what?
You make a good point, but realistically I don't think anybody saw OSRS becoming as popular as it is, they probably thought it was going to be a nostalgia hype that would die after 6 months, with no updates it would have died years ago.
best place to train melee is at nechs with dins bulwark and spec transfer alts, over 1m/hr xp
You mean fastest, best does certainly not incluse the use of alts to keep running back and forth😅
The first idea for the nmz is so messy. Like the corruption Jagex is allowing with mod trident and his gorlfriend still being aloud to play
Quite the missed opportunity to have the title be "RuneScape's First Minigame Was A Nightmare"
I'm binging these runeScape videos and I never even played the game
I have always enjoyed NMZ, I like it for training combat and its fun to re fight old bosses, that's just me though I have zero issues with it being the best place to train.
I agree with Dwayne. It truly is the biggest piece of dog shit.
Man I wish I knew about the free magic back in the day I would have played lol
If not for nightmare zone I wouldn’t have got 99 melee stats lol. There’s no difference between someone leveling up thru fighting monsters or me fighting bosses. If you want to take the long route go ahead, but you don’t need to make me take that route with you.
Gotta love the KBD layer
I got all melee 99s recently from nightmare with nothing more than an auto clicker
I can never tell the difference between colonello or crumb
New players: Please do not just NMZ your combat just grind slayer, im begging you it's way more fun
The only friend I had that played OS was insistent I grinding my combat in NMZ.
Why can’t players just train slayer?
Edit: please do not, just train Slayer!
NMZ for imbues, if you hate lms and pvp arena. Otherwise train combat through slayer unless you are afk only
@@Jaywin228 I meant they should, I edited it for clarity
I havnt played since tears of guthix was new content. I love NMZ just started playing a few months ago again after so many years. I did plenty of slayer but for def afk exp NMZ has beena blessing
Been playing OSRS since day 1. I just got the rings from NMZ, never bothered doing it again since.
Rather than voting for extending the longevity of the game
Still waiting for them to basically remove run energy from the game. Lots of community discussions and failed polls. Just delete it like they did with RS3.

I mean, that's all fine and dandy and even interesting, but what on earth does this have to do with Gnome Ball?

Visually too. But they are releasing old overrides all the time to make at least your character look rs2.
Not many players know. But you can turn on legacy combat and interface. Buried in the settings.
But it turns the UI into a late rs2 setup, and turns EOC completely off.
So its just rs2.

Nightmare zone is not the best melee xp/h. You can get over 1m xp an hour spec transfering claw specs on zebak. Also soec transfering bulwark or crystal hally on nechs is 600k/h. Even regular slayer no spec transfering is faster than nmz
