      Tax is okay, really only bad for flips. But the resource drops should’ve been stuff that already held value outside of their scarcity. Rune bars, ores, magic logs stuff like that. It’s when they updated slayer and added all the noted drops that killed mid level skilling. Gargoyles and kurask being the worst

    The problem with OSRS and most games nowadays is that the players have become so obsessed with the META that nobody just plays for fun anymore. Hence the death of minigames etc. Its all about max xp/gp per hour and less about the experience.

    While it might've been bad for the game at the time, Zulrah is in my opinion THE most important update of the history of OSRS. To me, Zulrah was the point where Jagex wanted OSRS to stop being in the shadow of RS2. Even if it's an easy boss by today's standards, without it being a stepping stone that proved to Jagex that we can handle challenge in our content, we wouldn't have raids, the inferno, nor any other content where Jagex tries to push the limits of their engine (see sepulcre)

    • @ColonelloRS

    • @solarifle
      @solarifle Рік тому +3

      @@kylejoly577 True, but modern MMORPG design is pretty much built around pushing players into the end-game, and OSRS is no exception (How people were training melee skills back in actual 2007 seems crazy compared to NMZ strats). Bosses like Zulrah/Vorkath that are low barriers to entry, while being consistent profit without RNG are pretty much the best way to get people who are just starting to look into the end-game, which is why I say that it was bad for the game at the time. Up until CoX there really wasn't much worth doing anything else unless you enjoyed pet hunting, so by the time we got our first raid, we had at least 2 years worth of supply drops being dumpstered by almost every high level player.

Like the video says at the end how skilling lived next to pvm, and now skilling is just the skeleton guy at the table of the poster of the game, but this time it's just the knight who imagines that his friend who is the skeleton is actually alive.
      Maybe using ruins to picture RuneScape is bit too dramatic, but it's in a state of mess. I feel like so many things that are not even RuneScape actually are shaping out the game.

    The nightmare has a cool droptable, but my complaint there is that there are too many different powerful items there. Why not just have the staff and orbs, and give the BIS inquisitor gear to different bosses? I would like to see powerful items spread out a bit more. They need a bottom up progression. Where late game absolutely sucks the life out of low level resources. The only issue is bots but new world has used this system with great results as it allows new people to get reasonable gold. You could add a more natural way to break down gear also. Like breaking down armor just gives armor shards to upgrade/charge gear. This would let the economy raise the price on saturated items since they would be cheaper and everyone would buy them up.

    It was honestly crazy that the meta for ironman was to kill like 10k zulrah if you wanted to max. This is unfortunately one of the issues we were going to face when we reset the servers to 07. We went from having no endgame bosses outside of GWD (which have terrible overall drops) to the first boss with a good farmable drop table. Zulrah did a good job of killing off alot of the boring content that makes players end up quitting the game.

  • @BioMasterZap
    @BioMasterZap Рік тому +8

    Might be worth noting that the Spike was replaced by the Serp. The intent was one drop for each combat style. The fang working on the trident was also added in later blogs since the SotD was more PvP focused than PvM. Then there is the whole blowpipe speed thing which was technically polled at dart speed, but likely due to the CM who wrote the blog phrasing it poorly.
    For the drop table, I'd say players blame them a bit too much for the state of skilling. Even back in the day, bosses had drops like 100 Yew Logs but it wasn't an issue then. The bigger issue isn't that PvM drops skilling resources, but that PvM has gotten more endgame content with higher profit per hour while skilling has largely remained the same. There are far more non-combat skills than combat skills, yet there are a lot more combat updates and when we do see skilling updates, they tend to be new training methods, not new money makers. It is hard for skilling to keep up when they're getting minnows when PvM is getting raids. Some bosses like release zulrah did drop too much of certain resources to the point it hurt the markets, but a many skilling resources were already close to alch value so drop tables didn't devalue them; money makers just moved past what they could earn.

    I returned to OSRS a couple months ago from quitting EOC in 2012 and man RIP skilling. It’s almost useless now and everyone is just doing bossing/raids. I remember the OG RuneScape was mostly pking/skilling.

    • @grandcanyon2
      @grandcanyon2 Рік тому +3

      They do bossing/raids because that has always been the best money maker since runescape classics. The thing is back then in rs classics and rs2 , players had worse stats and lvls and gear, now the player base is older and train better have better gear and stats so they can go in groups and kill monsters on avg faster and better. The avg combat lvl and non combat stats of osrs players is much higher then back then. Alot of people still skill, but now they skill to max out their account or to gain total levels. Before players mostly leveled up skills to make money to afford to lvl up another skill and so on and so on.
      Skills are still fun their not useless at all, its just that bossing/raids provide more money. I can half afk train at abby demons for a few hours a week and make 8-13 mil off of whips.Pking dying on osrs has to do with the mechanics changing over time and a more responsive servers with alot less delay which leads, to a high skill gap in pkers. OSrs pvp skill of entry is to high for most players, the only thing that will still be somewhat active is clan/team pking in the wilderness. Not to factor in jagex made mistake by making pvp worlds, the literally broke the pvp community into to many groups in different areas and locations, so people went to edgeville saw no more people and quit. Before there would be 500-600 people in front edgeville on most wilderness worlds with all lvls from lvl 3-90 then you would go up a little higher to wilderness 12 and you would see lvl 90s-120s right under the black knight castle.
      Now its just folks on pvp worlds trying to spec rush folks 15 levels lower then themselves.

    I remember back in the day you'd just log in, chop yews west of Catherby bank and just hung out there for hours being afk and having conversations with strangers and you'd have so much fun. When OSRS came out, that's exactly how it was for a good while, and pking was really active. Then this happened (what you explained in the video) and OSRS became something else entirely. Don't get me wrong, I still played the hell out of it and even maxed, but it was because before, I was the kind of player that did it all... lying back and afk skilling, doing some slayer, killing green drags, going to the mining guild so I could mine tons of coal to make steel bars for cash, but what really took the cake for me and was my favorite vice was Edgeville pking. Then all these updates started coming out and I was like hmm, what if I tried out PvMing? (I always saw PvMers as noobs back in the day and thought pking was where it's at. Anyway, I really enjoyed PvMing. I used to not like slayer but after I got into the late 70's to mid 80's, I really fell in love with it and PvMing was my new thing. It was still fun though because at the beginning, skilling was still an option and profitable, even if it wasn't quite as good as high lvl slay and pvming. Slowly but surely OSRS turned into either pvming.... or pvming. PKing wasn't the same cuz it was hard to find a steady stream of fights like before by just showing up at Edgeville on your cb lvl range's location, most skilling areas were prety deserted (like the almighty flax fields and the yew trees around it), and well it kinda lost it's original appeal. Idk how to put it without having a super long, complex and nuanced conversation about it, but it's bittersweet. I really miss the old essence and magic of it. Part of the problem is that people think that "if only this skilling money maker was better, then I'd skill more!" when in reality, there's no way that extra 200k/hr is what's keeping people from cutting yew logs.
    More people want to boss than to skill, so to keep the economy's supply of skilling items from drying up, some of it needs to come from bosses.

      Check the skilling money making guides on the wiki:
      There are fishing, crafting, cooking, mining, fletching, herblore, smithing, thieving and magic skilling methods that crack 200k, and many which push 500k - 1m per hour.
      My point is that Zulrah, and other bosses which add skilling supplies into the economy, aren't "keeping you from skilling". You can still make great profit skilling if you want to. They're just a scapegoat for skillers to complain that their incredibly low effort methods aren't profitable enough.
      In addition, Zulrah actually *benefits* skillers, because she pushes down the price of base ingredients. Sure, Zulrah makes coal cheaper, which makes mining it worse, but that also makes smithing bars better! Zulrah makes magic logs cheaper, but that makes fletching magic longbows more profitable! This applies to almost everything on her drop table: Cheaper flax makes spinning bowstring better. Cheaper pure essence makes runecrafting better. Cheaper mahogany logs makes plank making better.

I would bet 92 percent of the osrs community doesnt even have 85 minning, as its the skill with the least amount of players with 99. Ive minned rune ores for a few hours it would take ages, to lvl it up from minning rune ores let alone minning it to lvl up smithing. Ive seen some iron men streamers who done things like this but guess what they play osrs for 12-14 hours a day and even then it took them 1-2 months.
      I got 99 slayer you know what i did with the herbs and seeds and gems etc i sold them, iam not making no gem amulets to train crafting, or making strengh and attack potions to lvl up, iam not planting no seeds. You know whats more effective using the gp and planting trees, or buying ingredients for super energy potions, buying mith bars and making plate bodies then reselling them at the ge, till i can make addy plates bodies and then sell those and buy more addy plates. I can also buy green dragon hides then make dragon body hides and resell those and buy more hides to train.
      it was 2 mil gp from lvl 1 crafting to 63, then from 63-85 it was 8 mil, from 85-99 it was 23 mil gp.
      smithing it was 4mil from 1- 68 for mith plate bodies from 68-89 it was 18mil gp, from 89-99 it was 5mil gp.

I went from 85-90 fishing doing drift net fishing and chopped teak logs for 85- 90 woodcutt. i didnt collected the logs but off of drift net fishing i collected like 1.8k turtles and 1.7k sharks and 800 manta ray. People keep thinking with nostalgia glasses, folks didnt do those low teir skilling methods because it was fun, they did it because they were broke in rs and needed fast low effort way to get cash for their dragon long-sword/b axe or rune full gear. Zulrah was the worst thing that OSRS introduced to the game.
    Not for the boss, Zulrah is a great and fantastic fight that I am honored to have 1kc for and will never touch again.
    But the fact that the loot table killed skilling (I paid for my first bond post-members with fishing sharks and I'd never be able to do that again v_v) and the blowpipe was ubiquitously and singlehandedly the best weapon in the entire game for literally every single piece of content (in the very very niche situations it wasn't the very best, it was at least top 3 or extremely viable), the combination of the two has damaged the game irreparably to this day.
    There used to be a harmony between skilling and PvM.
    PvMers get the best gp hour over time, but their drops were rare. They relied on skillers/skilling to get supplies for them: Food, potions, ammunition, runes, etc.
    Skillers had very consistent gp per hour, but their best methods were either slow or click intensive. They relied on PvMers to create demand and for the best gear such as the dragon pickaxe.
    Nowadays if a skill isn't combat-related or buyable, it's not even worth training unless it's a quest requirement :(

    Everyone is upset that skilling isnt as profitable because of the way drop tables have been stacked, but I think worse than that is the way it kills content in the game, whole skills even. If you want magic logs for example, whats the best way to get them? Thats right, Vorkath. three magic log drops from Vorkath is, on average, slightly more logs than you would get chopping a magic tree that never depleted for over an hour, even if you used a dragon axe and were level 99. Three magic log drops is also not a very hard number to hit, players who grind out Vorkath can get kills down to a matter of a couple minutes and so can recieve dozens of drops in an hour.
    resource gathering skills such as mining, woodcutting, and fishing, and even some of the processing skills like runecrafting and smithing become almost useless in the face of so many of these sorts of things. Its not just about the raw utility or uniqueness, but that its measurably not worth your time to even engage with them because after a certain point they arent even the best way of doing the only thing they do. Mining was only ever meant to be a skill that allowed players to get ore, but now its outclassed by slayer, or just buying ore at the blast furnace shop. Runescape is already a game about grinding, and what had ultimately happened is large portions of the game have become even grindier by just not having the long term utility that made some things feel less grindy.
    Forget the economy, any of that, its literally sabotaging parts of the game. It incentivizes players to do less and to move into narrower and narrower forms of interaction with the game. Just do Slayer, do just enough skilling to get some quests done, why do anything more?

    • @grandcanyon2
      @grandcanyon2 Рік тому

      slayer would never give you more ores then mining the ores themselves as a person with 99 slayer, what your saying is not true. Processing skills give you the advantage of being able to have the option to get the resources yourself. Slayer doesnt even give you enough herbs or seeds then the training farming or herblore. No one is stopping players from skilling, if you want the resources you can go train the skills yourself.

    I think you need to look at this from another perspective, it's not a boss that ruined OSRS forever, it's a gamemode that ultimately changed the design philosophy, I'm talking about ironman mode, conveniently released a few months before Zulrah, ever since then (even though the devs at the time said they wouldn't cater specifically for ironmen) everything has dropped supplies and resources en masse and I don't think that's a coincidence, a new solo boss coming out after the solo gamemode that dropped a bunch of resources that'd normally take a while to grind out solo, I don't think they had the economic impact in mind. Also you say they've returned to form with Nex/Nightmare but what are they? Oh yeah (not talking about Phosani's that got added later) GROUP bosses, not solo. I guess I just kind of forgot about them, so it was pleasant to be reminded of their existence.

    There is no boss that ruined the game forever. OSRS was already ruined when it made its first day release. Ever since the first day the botting and money laundering started. This game has been completely ruined since day 1. There has been only one good runescape version out there and it was the classic one.

    The game is unbalanced. It’s no longer the perfect harmony of skilling, pvm, and pvp.

    A big point in skilling for resources, instead of PvM, is that people that need to PvM continue to drive the economies of the skillers who are bringing them resources, like food and potions, but if you can just PvM everything, you literally kill half the game's purpose?
    I started in 2005 and RS has always seemed to favor combat over skilling..
    Sometimes and update would make skilling be the best money maker, then PvM, and back and forth.
    Things change, but stay the same...
