    The best advice i can give is to look beyond just Lego to other brands like Funwhole and Pantasy. You're going to dramatically expand your options for modulars, get the same quality or better, and save a ton versus Lego prices.

      Unless you already have Lego that might be from your childhood you will need to invest money into the hobby. Unfortunately that is the case for a lot of hobbies.

    Great video! I had no idea you had to remake the first floor to adapt your existing modulars to fit the MILS system. I wish I started earlier.

    My mom and I would get the modulars every year starting with pet shop (yet we both didn’t get town hall somehow 🤦‍♀️). When she passed away, I stumbled upon rebrickable because I couldn’t bear to part with them and needed ideas. Now I can look at my shelf city and see all the alternate buildings and know they were hers.

      Awe…. I teared up reading this. That is so beautiful. I turned my Corner Garage into my Grandpa’s garage to remember him, so this definitely struck a chord with me. Things like this remind me that Lego is more than plastic bricks ❤️

    I only ever collected medieval and pirates… Then my wife got me the bookshop and the obsession took off from there lol. Got the assembly sqr next, followed by boutique hotel, jazz club, police station, and museum. Then a few months later I found the corner garage, detective’s office, brick bank, Parisian restaurant, and downtown diner all at a garage sale for $100 each. Still hunting for a good deal on my white whale sets, town hall and fire brigade.

    In times past all you needed to call a place a city was a church and a post office. Seems reasonable to me.

    As somebody whose starting a city myself, my advice is to get at least one modular just as a nice center piece for your town, if this was 10 years ago I would have said snag the town hall, but sadly that things gonna cost you a kidney nowadays. So I would say go for something like the Police Precinct, or pick up the Boutique Hotel while you still can, or if you really want to go off the wall and not go for a modular, go for ninjago city gardens, it's set to retire by the end of this year I'm pretty sure, and it's cheap for 5000 pieces.

      Glad I could help! It is worth it 100% in my opinion! It also gives you more flexibility when it comes to roads if you make those. It also lets you build deeper. So for example, you can tell a story on a sidewalk of a hole in the sidewalk. 😁

    My 2 level shelf city just reached its limit with space, so this is perfect timing. I also recently got heavily into the modulars, with my first one being the sanctum from marvel and the police station as the first official modular. I got hooked and now i got almost all of them except the first 4 (cafe corner, green grocer, market street and fire brigade) and i still need to pick up the recent museum. Some of them i got second hand from a germany-exclusive platform called kleinanzeigen (its essentially ebay), and got some great scores. That one time a guy sold his collection and i picked up the parisian restaurant, grand emporium and palace cinema from him for 350€ total. In my eyes thats a great bargain!
    Now i need to find a bigger space to display them

    Great video!! I just got started on my lego city, all I have is a train from when I was a kid and I recently got a used lego creative box (10698) for really cheap, there's a bunch of houses (house near bookshop!!!) and shops you can make with it on rebrickable, I definitely recommend this approach if you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to start (cost me like 50$ used, had a few other sets thrown in) and if you don't mind having very colorful buildings. There's a few limitations in those mocs since they are limited to the pieces from the box but if you have even just a few spare parts you can improve on the mocs and make some pretty great stuff with these creative boxes!

    Hello, I see that everyone and you too says only about modular buildings or modular size buildings, but it is very expensive. I think if you make a video about how to make a lego city using a regular lego sets it will be interesting. I had most exciting after I built some small modifications from regular city and creator sets. I think some people will be excited too

    • @CamToner
      @CamToner  5 місяців тому +2

      This sounds like fun. Just for clarification what do you mean by “regular Lego set”? Modular’s are Lego sets. Are you talking about sets that are cheaper and don’t have a back to them?
      I was thinking about a video of making a microscale Lego city!

    • @valexandrov192
      @valexandrov192 5 місяців тому +4

      @@CamToner they don't have back of them (like most city sets) or they have turned parts (like lego creator noodle shop)
      Yes main of them is a lower price, but price not all purpose: also i think that lego have very few modulars and every lego city that made of only modular sets are very similar. I think that best city is a combination of creator, friends, modular, creator, etc sets. I think it is esyest way to make a unique city. And very few video how to make it.

    • @SO-ym3zs

      The best thing to do is look beyond Lego to the other manufacturers. You'll suddenly have far more modular choices, usually at way better prices. You can get modulars from Funwhole or Pantasy that are as good as Lego for 1/3 to 1/2 the price, at least in the US.

    As impressive as the large table design cities are, I really think the bookshelf design has a lot of advantages. In the big layout cities, details and stories are farther away from the viewer and lost in the big layouts. With shelf cities viewer can be inches from all the buildings to inspect the details, interiors and stories. Shelves take up little floor space so can be shared in a room that serves other purposes. You can have in it the family room where it can be enjoyed throughout the day. Also if spouse is unwilling to sacrifice a room to LEGO, bookcases are a good compromise. Making changes and adjustments are easy to get to and make. Different themes can be separated by shelves or on a separate bookcase. Lighting can be easier. A wall of modular buildings look quite impressive too. On the downside, bookshelves don’t accommodate trains, large landscapes or large deep structures as well as tabletops and are segmented so broad stories have to be sacrificed. All that said, if room is limited bookcases/ shelves are very attractive option for those starting a city. Personally, I don’t like cities in real life so I’m not inspired to build a LEGO city but prefer vignettes or dioramas which adapter to small to medium size spaces and theme changes. The beauty of LEGO is there is no one way to enjoy it. When I was a kid, we never displayed our creations. We built vehicles and buildings to use with our Hot Wheels and action figures. Then we would tear apart our multicolored, Frankenstein-ed structures and build whatever the next imaginary adventure needed. Ah, childhood…..

I just really dont want to do custom builds, I love using my imagination, but with lego i need instructions.
