I think that Lego can justify the premium price due to the effort in designing the builds and various licensing fees. But if you're building a retired set, where Lego won't get any of the resale money, it makes sense to use 3rd party bricks.

I don't know. The cost of this webrick set was roughly comparable to the cost of the set when it came out BUT without the mini-figs, printed pieces, initial promotional costs (box art, ads, etc) and design costs for creating the build. So it seems like lego might be competitive already given all the hidden costs. But if you just want bricks and free lego instructions, then webrick is great.

I’m not coming at this from a “purist” angle, and I’m not even an aficionado by any means, but I think it’s important folks are aware that a huge contributor to the cost of Lego brand sets has to do with paying Lego employees-including the amazing engineers and designers that spend months creating these builds before they’re ever even brought to market or make a profit.
Yes, Lego has made their instructions and parts lists available online, so yes, you can def rip them and then source the bricks from somewhere else. But just know that you’re not contributing to the source that invested in all that time and talent to produce those designs-which are the best in the world for a reason.
I’m honestly not arguing either way, and I think it’s fine to source some bulk quantity pieces elsewhere if you’re building major MOCs and need to save some cash-I don’t think the number of folks doing this will make a huge dent in Lego’s sustainability. But it’s just a good awareness to keep in mind, and also can contribute to Lego prices going up. If everyone did this, it would only result in a race to the bottom where cheap is all that matters, and Lego couldn’t afford to pay for the talent that gets us these designs.
Lego isn’t price-gouging or trying to rip off their customers. Lego is the company that is investing in all the people and their talent and skill. And they pay a competitive living wage to all their employees. That investment in people increases the price per brick vs a knock-off company that only snags their final work, and then manufactures a knock-off end-product material to copy it. Nothing is contributed to paying for what it took to get there.
Just something good to be aware-the cost for Lego isn’t about the manufacturing costs alone, like it is for the copycats. But I appreciate this vid talking about the differences and similarities in the final end product. This is just something for people to keep in mind. Has nothing to do with being a purist or a brand fan; I only own a few Lego sets myself. But I do care about quality development and companies that pay their workers. And I think Lego build designs are incomparable and unmatched by any other, and I’m happy to pay for that.

I love how candid you are about using alternative bricks. For so long it’s seemed like every lego fan/content creator has been so hush hush about even the possibility of going that route. I’ve been buying bootlego for years at this point and have yet to have any issues and it’s nice to see someone going out there publicly and validating that, yes, this is a thing, and yes, it’s cost effective. LEGO isn’t owed anything from us. If they want to make the prices too high, you’re allowed to take your business elsewhere.

There are 3,800 unique lego bricks. The factory couldn't realistically print all unique pieces from every retired set they've put out in the past 70+ years. The fact is that once lego retires a set, those unique prints just skyrocket because lego has no reason to continue to print the pieces. Lego is releasing 150+ new sets, just in January 2024. Lego didn't get where it is today by continuing to make wooden toys. They are constantly evolving & innovating.

Makes me sad its becoming out of reach for many at a time when we need hobbies. I love the collection I have but, like you, I am not ashamed to add in unique alt brands. I think lego as a brand is missing a lot of opportunities. Used to be a purist but life changes ,and income decline opened up my eyes to alts. I think its great if people can afford all real lego but they have to realise not everyone can. Alt brands give every socio-economic group the chance to enjoy the hobby. It's all about creativity. I love this idea, and I’m definitely gonna use it this summer when I want some new sets; I had a play around with the websites and the palace cinema came out to be half the price if not less than what eBay was selling for! But then I also did it with the boutique hotel and some were cheaper and some were only slightly more expensive, yet again, they would all be second hand ones and this way would be brand new ones, and I guess the palace cinema is a much older set and therefore more expensive and has a higher want, interesting to see how the prices vary!

@2:45 I swear to god the second I saw this shot I said to myself 'This isn't original LEGO'. You can see it, especially with the ingot pieces - they don't look as 'crisp' as original LEGOs do.
That said, I can't convince myself to use other brands (not even in places where you don't see the bricks, like in a foundation). That might be dumb costwise, but a part of me thinks that it's just not the same *shrug*. Like an original painting and a print of it.

Also I hope you could have included the shipping cost and provided a total cost which should be bringing this closer to $200. Now, I am not 100% loyal to Lego, but I better spend $400 and have an opportunity to resale with more money in future than spending $200 with no ROI. Kindly let me know you pov on this if possible.

I pieced together the Cafe Corner thanks to a local used Lego store and Bricklink. I was piecing together a few other modulars before I realized I don't have the space for them ._. I'm having trouble convincing myself to try off-brand bricks, mainly cause idk what I have against them. It just... feels wrong. Not that I have anything against people that go with those instead of Lego.
Edit: I should've waited until the end of the video to comment. I think what you mentioned about Lego just feeling right to put together is a big part of it. I can build modulars of my own design - including using bricks in colours Lego don't make (i.e minifig utensil telescope in red, for railings) - for a price that, while high, is still less than the cost of an official lego modular.

I have ordered 3 or 4 sets of bricks from WeBricks. Color can be VERY inconsistent. I ordered a bunch of trans (dark) blue tiles, and they were all over the map in color--with 3 different shades of blue which went from slightly darker than Lego brand trans blue to slightly lighter than Lego brand trans dark blue. Ended up ordering replacement bricks from Lego. Similarly, my whites ranged from Lego white to slightly yellowed white to slightly tan white. It looked really obvious on my ski slope. Other than these two colors, everything else was just fine. Brick tolerances were not as good as Lego, so some bricks -- like the shorter axles were too long and interfered with the motion of some models. The solution was to trim the axles until they fit and did not bind. Not an ideal solution. Some other parts didn't lock together as well as Lego bricks do. So, overall, I save money by buying from WeBricks, but I always end up having to order some replacement bricks from Lego or Bricklink.

I have a mix of both Lego brand bricks, and various others, I can definitely tell the difference in quality between certain brands, and of course Lego itself. I honestly didn't mind getting complete sets that were 'stolen' from Lego, because the thing is, if the set is no longer available, I can't buy it from Lego anyway. They are not gonna make money off me either way.
I also did a large moc creation in my city, and I bought those parts out of China as well, if I had bought those from Lego, it would have been 4x the cost. I like Lego, but I also like a ton of other stuff, so I have to choose where to buy it from.

They are about 90percent of the lego quality for a third of the normal price or even much less with sets that are old and rare . Some people probably say its bad because its just a copy of lego but they could make their sets cheaper.by the way the brick bank costs about 70usd with all prints and parts exactly like in the original

I found a AliExpress a very good place to get my knock off Legos. I’ve gotten four of the street view buildings and a garden building there’s no backs on them but that’s OK as you were saying in the other video you can always put the backside on. With extra pieces. Or you 13:57 could put the buildings back to back so you don’t have to see inside but that’s the fun with going and playing with the Legos inside.move them around. I just spent $102 today with shipping included. By buying the Cuba church and a treehouse four road pieces. some railroad track and a cute little florist shop so three main buildings and some odds and ends for $102 that’s pretty darn good.

If you really want to use custom prints but don't wanna pay the extra 20$ a piece, there is a solution (although I'm certainly not the first person to think of it): send the prints into a label maker, and print them as stickers to put on the pieces. Surely many people have tried this already, and it can't cost all that much, especially if you already have a label printer

Would you happen to have any tips on keeping WeBrick pieces separate from LEGO brand pieces? Like for personal projects, I'm fine using offbrand and this looks very promising, but if I'm part of a LUG collab they're going to be more strict about it. Just worried that once imposters enter the house (however high quality) there'll be no escape 😅

    • @NewBrickerton
      @NewBrickerton  10 місяців тому +1

I totally understand, for me I would recommend not mixing the bricks in builds if possible. For example, if you are building a building I'd use all WeBrick parts or only LEGO parts. This will also help in the case of slight color differences in the plastic, which does happen occasionally. Organization wise for the piece collection you'll just need to be careful and keep them separate. If you have separate storage then you can be confident of which is which.
